TE Jake Stoneburner (Official Thread)

I would love to see him emerge as a big playmaker at the TE spot, he seems to have a bit more speed than your usual tight end.
I can see this kid being a big factor next year, luckily it looks like Tressel has received the memo that tight ends are eligible receivers. :)

:(jake ballard was a big time threat to catch the ball too, but the only play ill ever remember him for was that catch in the rose bowl. i think they could use jake in the slot and get him matched up with linebackers to create some problems

The problem right now with Jake, is that he is not really blocking anyone. So when hes in hes either a liability in the run game, or the D knows it will be a pass.

edit: just saw you said slot. My B.

Jake actually had some solid blocks on some runs play or TP's scrambles this year.

I hope he is a part of the gameplan going forward. Based on what Wisconsin did to Miami in the passing game with the TE position, I would hope our staff works Jake into that week's gameplan.

Winslow can thank Andre Johnson for being that open all game long.

And thank UMs backfield for occupying our D's focus as well. Da U's offense was pretty darn good that year. Our D was simply better in most cases. What a load of talent on the field that night on both sides of the ball.

As for Stoney, I've got to hope that he won't be a liability in blocking because if he can pull that together, he's got such a unique set of tools that he would/will be extremely dangerous and useful. Guys with his size and speed are unique.

Tight End (Jake Stoneburner): When the Buckeyes lost Rory Nicol after the 2008 season it was assumed Jake Ballard would take his place in the starting lineup. After turning in a solid senior season, Ballard also moved on and now it?s Jake Stoneburner?s turn to step into that role. A converted wideout, Stoneburner entered spring as the front-runner for the starting tight end spot, but he was expected to face strong competition from sophomore Reid Fragel. Instead, the redshirt sophomore out of Dublin has all but locked up the job with a strong showing through the first half of spring ball. There?s still plenty of time for Fragel to make a late push, but Stoneburner has worked hard on his blocking and his athleticism brings a different dimension to the OSU offense.

Stoneburner Out to Change Perception
By Brandon Castel

COLUMBUS ? When Jake Stoneburner committed to Ohio State in 2008 he planned on catching a lot of passes in the Scarlet and Gray.

In two years with the Buckeyes he has just two, but if this spring is any indication, that number could be about to change drastically in year No. 3 for the Columbus native.

?It?s been a very productive spring compared to the last two springs. Probably double the amount of balls I caught,? Stoneburner said after Friday?s practice in which he hauled in a number of passes from quarterback Terrelle Pryor.

?I?ve probably caught as many balls these past 10 practices as I have the past two seasons combined. If that just carries over to the fall I'll be a happy guy.?

Both of Stoneburner?s catches came last season when he backed up starter Jake Ballard as a redshirt freshman. It was his first time on the field at Ohio State, not to mention his first season ever as a tight end.

?Really Jake Ballard helped me out a lot because I?d never really ever played tight end and I didn?t know how to block,? said Stoneburner, who came to the Buckeyes as a 230-pound wide receiver out of Dublin Coffman high school.

?I was by his side last spring and he taught me how to block and then this past year I got my feet wet and over the off-season I?ve really been working hard at it.?

I've continually said this for a long time: A pass catching TE could be Pryor's best friend.

And think we might just see that this season..

I'll beleive it when i see it. I have been waiting for about 8 years. Ballard was a great blocker, but he was no slouch as a receiever...and he rarely got balls thrown his way.

I've been waiting 7 years for another weapon at te. Jake is the first one in that span.

The last time osu had one, they featured him and the NFL just resigned him yet again.

Since then we've had no one with NFL ability. Irizarry spoiled his shot with felonies.

Did Jake (Ballard) have nice hands? Sure, but he wasn't really a weapon. Hamby and nicol were a step behind Ballard and that department.

NFL scouts watch every game osu plays. If they saw a hidden gem, they would snatch him up in a heartbeat. Instead they have been cut from free agent contracts.

People being up Wisconsin, but quite simply:

1. They have a lack of great athlets at WR.

2. They have had a lot of great athletes at TE.

Owen Daniels - pro bowler
Travis Beckum - 5* freakish athlete
Garrett Graham - 3rd rd projection
Lance Kendricks - converted wr is the heir at the position

Don't forget Mr. Frost. He was destined to do well, but fell by the wayside.

Hartsock was a fine TE, but our QB was different then as well. I remain unconvinced that we'll use the TE much. I hope to be proven wrong.

No doubt, but we saw some changes to the offense last year with hazell's increased control.

The opener, Toledo, the 2 minute drill vs Wisconsin, those were all hazell. Jt buttoned it up because of tp's struggles, so we didn't see as much of that influence again until the bowl game.

Frost was a nice weapon, too bad he couldn't keep his nose clean.
