Re: Hawking, I remember that his ex-wife was a Christian. This is what wiki says about the matter overall:

Stephen Hawking - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Hawking takes an agnostic position on matters of religion.[50][51] He has repeatedly used the word "God" (in metaphorical meanings)[52] to illustrate points made in his books and public speeches. His ex-wife, Jane, however, said during their divorce proceedings that he was an atheist.[53][54] Hawking has stated that he is "not religious in the normal sense" and he believes that "the universe is governed by the laws of science. The laws may have been decreed by God, but God does not intervene to break the laws."[50]

Take it fwiw.

Reminds me of something I posted over a year ago:

I believe that we don't know if god exists, or not. It is beyond our comprehension. That's why we cannot prove it either way. Accordingly, religion has to be false because it not only presumes to know god is real, but what god wants, what god has done, and what he is going to do in the future. That's not just faith, that's hubris. But it persists in large amounts even into the 21st century because we want to believe it.

I see some people calling me an atheist. I don't recall calling myself an atheist (unless I was PUI). :wink2:

My point is the god of christianity, islam, or any other revealed religion is a creation of man, something man has been doing for centuries long before christianity and islam (see mithraism, for example). There is no evidence to support any of the claims made about them. The concept of a divine creator beyond our comprehension is much different than the notion of a religion revealed by god to man.

A religious god is not only presented to us in terms we can comprehend - he made us in his image, after all - but we are told what he has done, what he will do, what he expects from us and what he offers us, among other things. That is when we have moved from the concept of a divine creator to the theater of the absurd.

Thomas Paine articulated this concept far better than me.

Just as one cannot prove the existence of God to a nonbeliever, one cannot prove His absence to a believer. The attempts to countervail this truth on this thread are interesting at best; a waste of time at worst.

So what do you guys think about Jehovah Witnesses? I found out my friend was one and got into a heated argument about it. I didn't want to offend him but I was just trying to ask him about some of the holes in his religion. For some reason he didn't want to believe that I could be possibly right about the things I was telling him. It's almost scary to me but I think he has been brainwashed through fear.

I would simply caution you on hole poking. It can be done with any religion/belief system. Hence, the necessity of faith.

As far as JWs go, they definitely have a "different" system. I find it to be an extremely intrusive entity; however, some people dwell better in oppressive situations.

Surprised this one hasn't shown up here yet:

God Hinting At Retirement | The Onion - America's Finest News Source

"I couldn't be more proud of the universe I brought forth," God said. "But a lot has changed since then, and if I'm completely honest with myself, I'm probably not as passionate about my work as I once was. Things change. Who knows? I might not be the right entity for this job, going forward."

"Maybe we need some new ideas around here," God added. "Maybe heaven needs some new blood."

My parents actually dabbled with this when I was young. If raised from youth in their system you feel like an outsider, like you don't fit in. You can't do the pledge of allegiance, you can't participate in the school holiday parties, and you aren't allowed to celebrate birthdays, etc. My biggest issue with the faith is how it disenfranchises followers from society, similar to the Amish. Let people believe what they want to believe, just accept them. You would hope they do the same for you.

Here's what I hate. Say someone mentions their faith in God or in Jesus on a site like facebook. That's cool, I'm an atheist but whatever someone believes in that's cool with me. But then you always have the wiccan or pagen that has to chime in on how Christianity is bogus and start preaching their beliefs. There's this braod that slaps Christianity every chance she gets, says stuff like how could anyone believe in a person like jesusu blah, blah blah... But if you ask them about witches, vampires and zombies they talk about it like it's real. C'mon...

They dress nicely. And they're annoying.

Does anyone that lived back then know if the JW's predicted Armageddon in 1975, because they claim they didn't but everyone else claims they did not to mention all the other false prophecies. It just seems really shady.

They've predicted the Second Advent a number of times. If prophesy's supposed to be their thing; then they're an epic failure.

$20 says that's because she used to be Christian, and she remembers a jilted experience.

Once I left Christianity, I had a hard on for angst-ridden arguments in the hopes of destroying someone else's faith. I've since softened tremendously as I matured physically, emotionally, and mentally.
