*shrug* Wow, one second-place finish in the 74 years of the AP poll. Color me impressed. Ohio State has four AP titles (1942, 1954, 1968, and 2002) and seven second-place finishes (1944[sup]1[/sup], 1957[sup]2[/sup], 1961[sup]3[/sup], 1973, 1996, 1998, and 2006).
And since Oregon's amazing second-place finish in 2001, Ohio State has one national title (2002), two other appearances in the BCS championship game (2006, 2007), and two more top-five finishes (2003, 2005) ... not to mention a BCS bowl this year with a chance at yet another top-five finish. So, yeah, I guess that the two programs are pretty evenly matched when it comes to "contending for NC's and playing on the national stage." *shrug*
Well, you've been to Portland, right? And Portland has a bit more going on than Eugene, correct?
According to the Census Bureau's 2007 estimates, Portland's metro population is 2,175,113 (no. 23 nationally), while Columbus's is 1,754,337 (no. 32 nationally). Eugene's population is 343,591 (no. 144 nationally), which places it just behind Ann Arbor (350,003, or no. 141 nationally). So, cosmopolitan city versus college town. No comparison, really, in terms of "things to do" ... but some people prefer college towns.
