He also provides good run support, and was moved inside to the STAR (S/LB hybrid) to defend UM's spread option attack with Moeller/Bryant both out for health reasons. His one weakness has been finding the football. He almost always covers the WR like glue but does not always get his head around to find the ball and INT/breakup. He has improved in this area but still struggles with it occasionally. Last year it was rare for him to get his head around.
Devon Torrence is a good athlete (started at WR) with good deep speed, size and physicality. He is a very good athlete but not a scorching one like Chimdi. Like chimdi he can support the run and has a good nose for the ball. He has also been used sparingly on infrequent corner blitzes the last two years, like USC 08 & PSU 09. Usually in good position and finishes off the play after the catch, but can be beaten by a step by a good WR or QB. Rarely far out of position but not an extension of the WR's body like Chimdi.
Chimdi is a late 2nd-early 4th rd pick while Devon is probably a 6th rd pick to undrafted FA before their combine/pro day performances.
Jermale Hines is a very good athlete, with the size and physicality to roll into the box or STAR position and defend the run, the range and pursuit angles to blow up screens, option & outside runs. He has solid speed but is generally used in zone coverage. He can man up on underneath routes but is not going to track Joe Adams deep by himself from the line of scrimmage. He brings a lot of power behind his hits but does not overdo it, his kill shots only come in reasonable and controlled circumstances. He will wrap up and wait for help when the situation calls for it.
Orhian Johnson - is a long, big hitter with average speed who has gone from a liability (after taking over for the injured Barnett) to a fairly solid player. The knock on him has always been consistency, making a great play then a mistake afterwards, both in practice and games. He is a pretty average tackler that needs to improve his play recognition and pursuit angles. Definitely the weak link in the secondary for now.
Travis Howard - long, athletic corner from Miami. Plagued by injuries early in the year, really did some nice things at the end of the year, and his emergence allowed OSU to move Chimdi to the STAR position to defend spread sets. Before that, they really struggled to fill that position with injuries to CJ, Moeller, Bryant & Brown... plus Howard for awhile. OSU's most talented corner and the best NFL prospect. He is the #3 corner, but probably comes off the bench if Bryant is full go again.
Injured:
Tyler Moeller - poor kid can't catch a break. Went down for a season ending injury in 08 (replaced by Hines), then was cheapshotted by a despicable creature named Decker in 09 missing the season for brain injury (which was VERY serious), only to return at full strength in 10 and go down for another season ending injury. He was OSU's best defender, a ferocious player whose instincts, pursuit angles, fundamentals and speed made up for a lack of ideal measurables. He was sorely missed when he went out
Christian Bryant - true frosh stepped in admirably for Tyler and was already playing before that. He was really coming on by mid-season when he was lost for half a season to a staph infection. He is back to full strength finally and should be returning for the bowl game. He provides a huge boost to the secondary if he can regain his old form.
CJ Barnett - true soph who was playing well in his first two games when he was lost for the year to a shredded knee. He will not be back, and the dropoff was severe when OJ first took over.
Corey Brown - OSU's fourth corner was growing up with injury-driven reps only to also shred his knee. :(
Well he is from central florida :p I was going to go with southern speed for Travis, then I remembered Chimdi's from Clermont[SEC Fan] See...they admit to the slowness!!!! [/SEC Fan]
YupSorry I cannot remember - did Tyler get his additional year?
