Sugar Bowl - LSU 41, Notre Dame 14 (Final, Jan. 3, 2007)

Gosh! What a great year 2007 is already turning out to be. Ohio State has beaten Indiana on the hardwood to open Big Ten play, the football team is in Glendale as the favorites to win the national title, and Notre Dame and Michigan have both been soundly thumped in their bowl games.

Chad Henne and Brady Quinn have been pantsed before a live, national TV audience while the best QB in all the land is a Buckeye (and a Heisman winner).

I'm getting a little misty eyed just thinking about it.

Totally agree with that one. Can't ask for a better start to a year than that. We just need a National Championship now!!!

I would love to hear from knowledgable ND fans really think of the domers right now and what direction they see this program heading. Im sure most will blame NDs problems on Tys lack of recruiting, saying that he left Weiss with undersized and slow defensive players.

The ND faithful have put al of their collective eggs in the "Its all Ty's fault" basket. I posted about this in the ND non football thread I believe.

Bottom line is if Weiss doesn't deliver a legit NC contender in the next 2-3 years, they are going to have to come to grips with the fact they have found yet another failure for a coach.

I think this poster actually captured the essence of the BIG delima ND is facing:
I don't feel sorry for Weis in the slightest. I was a big supporter of Weis when he was first hired (I felt like the only one that hated Willingham and wanted a new coach) but any criticism he receives now he definitely asked for. He had no problem and didn't object when people called him a genius. He had no problem flashing all of his super bowl rings. And yet, when we get blown out time and again he gets upset if we have some criticism?

Don't pass yourself off as a genius and get angry when people start to doubt you. And I never thought I'd say this...but we didn't let Willingham get a full recruiting class at Notre Dame. Why should Weis be any different? I'm not saying fire him. Firing Weis would be admitting defeat and accepting a R.I.P. on Notre Dame's football program. But as far as Weis being the savior of Irish football, well, I think that was blown away as badly as the Irish were last night.

Every article I've read regarding Russell and the draft has him going high, many top 5. After last nights performance, I'd say he passed Quinn in a lot of people eyes. He'd be smart to come out now and avoid injury, or just a letdown in general. All reports have him being pretty athletic and we saw how strong his arm is, so I doubt he'd lose much luster in the combines either.

He looks good on paper and he looked great last night. I just can't help but wonder if he's ready yet is my only thought plus there's a lot of talent out there this year on defense plus all the WR's, RB's, and offensive linemen. I wonder how many teams in the NFL really "need" a QB rather than help on defense or the offensive line.

I agree but the question you have to ask is, is HE the guy you build your offense around or is he a guy you get later and work him in your lineup after a few years. I mean to me, a first round QB makes an impact now (Carson Palmer, Matt Leinert, Peyton Manning, Vince Young) a second round guy is a guy you play in 2-3 years.

My main point is that the guy is an item right now after beating up on a pretty weak ND defense is all I'm mainly getting at plus he's a Junior, plus he looks a little raw right now, not a guy I would throw to the wolves and make my starting QB on an NFL team.

Russel is a hell of a QB. He can throw the ball 85 yards???? They were also saying he can throw it 60 yards from his knees, and 40 yards from sitting down. Not to mention he is a mammoth of a man and has good mobility. I see this guy as almost a bigger Vince Young, if you can believe that, but I would definitely give VY the edge in decision making and leadership ability, but Russel can definitely improve on that.

I'm happy to throw 40 yards standing up.

while blaming willingham is the convenient approach, he did not teach this current group to be out of position defensively, take bad angles, and tackle poorly.

What's really hilarious is that the ND scout site shut down the ND boards and erased all posts done after kickoff since none of the posts were productive at all. Hilarious and pathetic all at once.

ND

I think it's funny that Notre Lame was embarrassed by LSU, just like they are always embarrased in bowl games. Maybe now their ridiculous contract with the BCS will be renegotiated. Let's be honest, they are over-rated year after year and didn't deserve this year's bowl game anymore than last year's.

Dryden is King!

My humblest apologies to Mr. Dryden.....he picked LSU to score 5 tds, and I picked six, saying that he was too conservative.

Didn't see the game, but through the flavor of these posts, it sounds like it was as bad as the score indicated. The Domers had no D, and couldn't generate any O. LSU didn't quite hang the 600 yards on ND, but it was reeeeeeal close. And I couldn't agree with the posters regarding Charlie "Cheeseburger" Weis more. If you take the bows for being a 'genius' you damn well gotta take the hits when things don't work out. That's called leadership. Actually, passing the credit on to others and taking the hits yourself is leadership.......

Anyway, on to Monday!!!! :gobucks3: :gobucks4: :banger:

This is not a chicken-egg situation. ND will have to lose their prodigious parish with a protracted period of poor performance before BCS bowls believe they don't belong.

Actually I disagree, I see all 3 of those things as a coaching problem. The tackling......maybe, but being way out of position 75% of the time is all coaching.

so, in the 2+ seasons that weis has been coached, he did not address these areas? willingham ingrained these poor qualities in the 1.5 years of his tenure that most of these kids went through? I don't buy it.
