Obese Man Crosses U.S. to Shed Pounds

By PETER JAMES SPIELMANN, Associated Press Writer Wed Mar 22, 6:31 PM ET

NEW YORK - Steve Vaught is trying to shed unwanted pounds the long, slow way: step by step as he walks across the United States.

Vaught, 39, began his trek last April in Oceanside, Calif., and has covered more than 2,300 miles. As the distances have mounted, so too has interest in his journey, with supporters monitoring his progress online and newspapers and television stations tracking the adventure.
Vaught began the trip to lose weight and break the bad habits that led to his obesity.
"When I first started this walk, I weighed around 410 pounds, and I was carrying an 85-pound backpack," Vaught wrote on his Web site earlier this month as he crossed Ohio.
"Now I weigh 296 pounds, and I am carrying a pack that weighs only 30 pounds. That is an overall reduction of almost 175 pounds off of my feet. So it will only get easier from here," he said.
Vaught, who lives in San Diego, is about 600 miles from New York, with freezing Midwestern winds snapping at his back. He expects to finish the trip in about six weeks.
He initially thought he could avoid the temptation of junk food on the road, where he usually camps in a tent at night between towns.
"It is amazing how hard it is to find good, healthy food while on the road," he wrote. "Most restaurants, fast food and sit-downs, offer limited choices, and usually you are relegated to a small variety of beef products with potatoes."
Vaught used to manage auto-repair businesses, but quit work before making the transcontinental journey. He seeks donations for each mile he travels and advertising for his Web site.
Vaught said he was not always overweight. "I have been many things in my life, from a lanky teenager to a muscular Marine, and now I am fat," he said. "This latest incarnation is without a doubt the worst."

Since 10/17/06 I'm down 30 pounds... I must admit the last month I've gone nowhere (literally... give or take a pound the scale hasn't moved in five weeks)... I haven't been sticking to the diet (actually I have done what I want, and ignored the fact I'm on a diet). Time to get back on the weight-loss track... (the good news is I have not put weight on, while living "normal")...

Does that mean you're going to gain 30 pounds over the next 7 months?

feeling better, a longer life, and increased endurance during cardio activities. Walking, running, basketball, sex, whichever you prefer. Plus you won't cut off the oxygen to your significant other with them below you, leading to a better experience for all.

Oh... I'm game for this as well....

It's so difficult living with BKB, he has the metabolism of a 15 year old... In fact reading GD01's post made me think back to our highschool years when BKB was 6'4" and didn't weigh an ounce over 150, talk about a scarecrow... I think he "bulked" up to around 180 when he was about 25 and has been there ever since, despite how much food he consumes... ok, back to the task on hand, count me in... (that is, if you allow girls, LOL.)

We've been bicycling all summer and fall. 1100+ miles.
I've slimmed downed but the weight has only gone down 6-7 pounds!

Eating less processed food(bread).
Eating more raw foods to help support my wife with her ulcer healing.
Clothes fit great so I don't worry much about the scale unless my knees start to complain about the weight....210 on a 6ft 1 in. frame.

Going to the gym, now.
I find gym work outs actually harder and more tiring!
My ideal weight with all the exercise is closer to 200lbs.

But the bottom line for me has become how I look in my clothes.

3 weeks ago I switched to a workout called the full body pump (insert joke here.) It actually works your entire body in about an hour. It is fast paced with little rest, so it gives you a great cardio workout too. I am 5'11", 188 lbs. which is really over weight according to those BMI calculators...they think you need to be built like a marathon runner to be healthy.

Anyway, I switched my workouts from heavy weight/low reps to lighter weight/ high reps to try to get a jump on the winter "bulk.":wink2:

I'm always in to monitor, give advice to, and take motivation from those participating. Premier on Sawmill (formerly Sawmill Athletic Club) reopens in early November, its going to be fantastic for those in the area.

Worked out at Westerville Athletic Club on Monday, its not too bad either. Same owner.
