Spring Fundraiser and a New Server (Merged)

Waiting for my medal to show up so I can speak with the voice of righteous authority. . .

Seriously, though, this will be my last post until I've got my medal. I'm now thoroughly embarrassed that I haven't had one already.

Keep it up, Mili, CB62. This guilt thing works.
You only receive medals for contributions to the site itself (donating durring drives, help with recruiting, finding/writing articles, etc.). Those of you who ordered shirts will not be receiving a medal (at least I don't think) for doing so. The reward for buying the shirt is, well, the shirt.

This was not directed towards you HineyBuck, as I don't know whether or not you have sent a donation to Clarity. I just thought it was a good time to let everyone know so there would be no confusion.

Thanks BfS & SIMV. I really wasn't attempting to get additional donations from those who've already kicked in, but it's appreciated.

Hopefully, everyone knows that we're close to realizing several of the main goals of BuckeyePlanet. The only thing holding us back is a server. Once that's taken care of, we should be good for the foreseeable future. There is another benefit to adding a new server. The old system will become a backup or redundant system in case anything should fail in the new system. As it stands, if the server we currently use fails ... no BuckeyePlanet ... period. It would be a long time before repairs are made to get the old system back up and running ... if at all.

Once a new server is in place, Clarity (and his programmer) can focus on completing the Stats Engine. That project, while it has some expenses, is nothing like adding a new server. With the Stats Engine online the main goals for BP will be reached. From there it's anyone's guess as to how BP will evolve. There's talk about a staff photographer ... possibly BP will obtain media credentials ... and whatever else the membership here can dream up.

Anyway, the future IS bright. It might be hard to see at times when the site is running slow and the goal for collecting money seemingly so high. I for one have faith that we'll get it done.

Thanks to all who've given of their time, their money and their love of the Bucks.

Another good thing about us getting a brand new server, which is actually a no-shit server instead of a computer employed as a server, is that future fund-raisers can be used to upgrade the server (expanded memory, bigger hard drive arrays, etc.), instead of having to pawn for another new server ti meet increased demands. If we get a nice enough server through this drive, we'll be able to double or even quadruple our membership over the next couple years, along with the new stats engine, and still be able to maintain acceptable performance simply through upgrades. So, we need to get as nice a server initially as we can through this drive.

First of all, Mili can you stick this in the first post of this thread? I am receiving the updates from Longwoodbuck until Grad gets back.

The question is what is practical?

DABucks offered up a pretty reasonable server option for around $2000-3000K... The server we've been talking about getting seems like overkill (I understand expandability, but that same speed/memory will be a lot cheaper down the road if and when we need them).

Also, we have to be realistic with donations.

Our t-shirt drive has had a lot of success, and we should raise $1K, and the other guy is matching that amount. But overall we have a lot of major posters who get a lot from this site who feel the rest of us should pay for their server. Just like in church, we do not function in a way that requires people giving money, however without good contributions from our members (which would be very little if everyone would give something) we cannot do much.

I think we should realize that raising another $4.5K is gonna be quite tough. Can't we get a sweet server that maybe has a few areas that we would like to be faster/larger/better but are scaleable such that we can just add on to the existing hardware later on.

I don't mean to sound rude, but I contributed to the fund, can someone please give me my medal before I get accused of being a cheap #$%#@^&.

Out curiosity, who has the donors list?
I just want to make sure my payment was recieved.
Plus since I didnt include my BP name, no one knows who I am!

Done. Just PM me with the updated figures so I can change the text portion. I'm assuming that the image name will remain the same and you'll just change the image to reflect to the new amount.

Send longwoodbuck a PM telling her when you sent in your payment, how much, and what email address it was sent from via paypal.

My guess would be they probably cross reference the email addresses with your membership email address and then figure it out that way...

Just out of curiosity....if we send money for the server upgrade during non fundraising periods i.e. sending money just for the heck of it to help out more, does that still qualify us for additional medals count? I like those those little thingys at the top and would have no problem whatsoever tossing a few more bucks in the server pot. I've already donated for the spring 05 fundraiser but have been thinking very seriously about sending in a few more bucks to help the cause. I love this place and want to do whatever I can to keep it up and running. It isn't that I want to be publicly acknowledged but I am unabashed sucker for doo dads at the top.
