Goodbye, Ohio State.
The Buckeyes will now vanish into the ether of Big Ten schedule mediocrity, reappearing only after you've fattened yourself on your Thanksgiving turkey. They'll go as victors after Saturday night's 40-30 win over Northwestern, which ended with a defensive recovery of a Northwestern fumble on the last play of the game. But they'll venture into their bye week with questions about their best players (Bradley Roby and Braxton Miller) and their coach (that fake punt try).
Urban Meyer is 18-0 as the leader of the Buckeyes, and Ohio State, fourth in the AP and third in the coaches poll, will remain ranked among the top five teams in the country.
But if the honeymoon isn't over, it's at least time to pack.
After a weak nonconference schedule, the Buckeyes had two games to show what they were about. They found ways to win, but did so while exhibiting their imperfections. And those blemishes appear in ways that are hard to ignore. The Buckeyes wound up as a team that needed to be bailed out by one player running behind an offensive line that eventually drove Northwestern into the ground. . . .
