Question for USCStephen. You mentioned earlier that USC's O-line and running game will be the strength of the offense, as it was last year. Ore. St. was the only team that had success in that area last year. In your opinion, was there something in OSU's scheme or personnel that gave them an edge, or was it more USC having a bad game (I didn't see the whole game). Do you think that there is anything The Buckeyes can take from that game for this year?

Welcome to BP, by the way. Good to have a knowledgeable USC fan to spark discussion.

It was several factors in my opinion. The scheme run by OSu and the lack of focus by the team would be the main ones. It was recently revealed that there was a lot of problems in Corvalis regarding travel etc. Its pretty irrelevant right now.

There were a lot of openings vs PSU, but Pryor wasn't seeing the whole field very well at that stage in his career.

Yes, I believe fully in this fact. The replays of the PSU game on ESPNU/ BIG10NET show a few plays where that happened. Most notably the TE down the middle of the field similar to how USC explioted the safety split that PSU does and scored deep late in the game. Pryor missed it and threw into double coverage for a first down when he locked in to the wr. If Pryor hit that pass OSU plays USC again in the Rose Bowl. Also his video work has been said to be one of his largest strides going into this season where his decision making will be better. Plus speed of the game will slow down for him.

Boren/Brewster/Cordle are locks. Cordle's question is if its going to be RG or RT. Browning won't take his place.. Cordle is one of the line leaders this year. I'm not so worried bout the tackle positions being locked because Guys got lazy last year knowing their spot was sitting there waiting for them. Competition always produces hunger especially on this level. Any one will be an upgrade at LT IMHO.

Related to the LT discussion, from Doug Lesmerises' article (posted by Buckskin86 in Spring Practice thread):

In an interesting development, J.B. Shugarts was the first-team left tackle. Andy Miller, who had been sharing time with Mike Adams at first-team left tackle in earlier practices, was the first-team left guard today, a move that came with Boren's injury. Jim Cordle, the left guard last year, stayed at right tackle. Adams did no work with the first team at left tackle today. Shugarts remains someone to keep an eye on in that left tackle competition.

Having a LT influx so late in the season it worrying no?
Brown was USC LT the minute Baker left, much to usc fans surprise. LT needs to be the most reliable position IMO. Its obvious OSU is struggling to find that guy right now.

It's actually a theme with the offensive line. Brewster suddenly broke into the lineup last year after the SC loss (too good to keep off the field), and Shugart might have too at RT had he not gotten hurt (at least that was my impression from reading the rumor mill). These two are the hungry puppies that we have and it's no surprise that they are working themselves into the lineup.

Obviously thats a good thing. It happened with SC a few times. RG was a mix of Herberer but then Parsons overtook him. Lewis at RT lost his place to Howell also. But Left Tackle is left tackle. I dunno, I would be uneasy about it. But you seem confident it will work out.

Who replaces Jenkins?

Its just recent nature of the beast here. As said before Boone held LT sooo long that no one even challenged him. But Tressell is known for building depth and at times having almost 2 full lines ready to spell. Having Boren/Brewster/ and Cordle back, ready and nasty the "fill-ins" will do fine... Browning at RG is likely so the LT position is the main spot up for grabs. But again LT is much more important if your QB sits in the pocket.

I think there's a little less panic given the mobility of the QB.
Who replaces Jenkins?
Chekwa is back, but OSU loses their other top-2 corners. Replacing them:

1. Devon Torrence - 07 played WR sparingly (wasted year and redshirt), moved back to CB last year. Mostly a special teams guy.
2. Andre Amos - 05 recruit, injured for most of his career, finally close to healthy. Back up CB last year. Last meaningful accomplishment was shutting down Mario Manningham in the Ohio all-star game (after Mario smoked the other corners for 3 early TDs).
3. Travis Howard - Redshirt frosh, HS teammate of Etienne Sabino. Good young corner, probably not ready quite yet.

Then the rest:
True frosh Corey Brown, Dominic Clarke & CJ Barnett. Only CJ enrolled early, but the other two might be more talented.
Backup CB Donnie Evege

Chekwah is locked right now. Amos recently got jumped by Torrence so another spot where whoever plays the best in game one could be the "starter" but the LB/DB has some good depth too.
OSU has had somewhat interchangeable #2/#3 CBs for 3 years now. Also, OSU uses field & boundary corners rather than #1/#2.

In 06, a former walkon was the field corner, but he slid inside against nickel packages, Washington became the field corner.
In 07 & 08, Washington & Chekwa switched roles a bit.

Doesn't sound exactly deep. Would Amos then be your nickel?

It depends. OSU has a "star" position, which is basically a S/LB hybrid that replaces the 3rd LB against spread formations. That player was Jermale Hines (who got injured and was replaced by Moeller).

Safety also plays a role in this. In practice, they've tried Russell at the star position, and a redshirt freshman named Orhian Johnson (6'4" QB/ATH recruit) takes his place at safety.

So you could see a corner, a star, or even a 3rd safety playing star filling that 3rd db role.
