Some Post-Game Thoughts - Indiana 2005

"Kudla has skyrocketed his draft this year!" Like in the Penn State game where he was handled by their backup tackle? He still has trouble gettin off blockers. He plays stiff. But, the pros will like his measurable and he will make some nice money. He is what he is. A good but not great player. He has been helped by Carp's rush on the other side! I like the guy!

Marcus Green has really helped his draft status with a solid season!
Richardson looks average.
Pitcock is gonna make some big money!
Patterson is coming on. Could become a NFL player.
Wilson and Gholston need time.

Youboty had sort of a tough game, was he hurting?
Jenkins is a monster at CB! Will become dominate.
Salley is not great in pass coverage, but brings the wood.
Witner is having a great season! Is he thinking about leaving early?

A lot of people are talking about Ashton's tough game. I didn't see anything particularly alarming. What have I missed here? The few plays I can recall that he was involved in he was lighting up bubble screens and holding the big ten leading WR to 2 Rec and minimal yardage. (Or was Jenkins lined up on 6'7" dude?) Regardless, IU never got uncorked in any facet of the game, and I just don't recall Ashton getting burned or anything. Least not on a ball that ended up being caught.

I didnt think Ashton played that bad. He had the two PI calls, but they werent horrible penalities. He had two balls that he could of picked and took back for td's, he is going to get one soon.

kudla didn't have any sort of draft stock last year, so I'd say that it has skyrocketed from there. I wasn't suggesting he was gonna start rivaling AJ and Bobby for the top-15 draft pick list.
That anticipatory whistle was bad, but redoing the kickoff was the correct call. On an inadvertant whistle the ball is given back to the team that last had possession. Since nobody had possession on the kickoff, the ball has to be teed up again.
It probably was the right call, but I've never seen something that poor take place that would warrant that call.

I agree with this and have to disagree with the other comments on Youboty's "off" game.

I was at the game and I saw Youboty play well. He dropped 2 INTs, but he's a CB and broke up the passes, did his job. The first drop looked like his own teammate got in the way, or he had to come around the IU receiver, didn't look like it was that easy of a pick. The second one he made a great break on the ball, as he was doing all day and just couldn't come down with it. He came up in covereage real well, made nice tackles, especially on that screen which was I think right after a Pass Interference call, or after he broke up that second ball. I can't remember what the exact sequence was but I just remember him following up after a mistake, staying in the game, responding well, and making a great play (much like Whitner against Miami, roughing the kicker, next play, pick 6).

Ashton had good coverage a lot of the game, as did the rest of the defense. I remember the IU QB having to throw the ball away atleast a couple times because of all the great coverage downfield.

"A final word - the officials were terrible, awful, horrible, putrid, pathetic, and just plain bad. The phantom penalty on Ginn's KO return, the "no whistle" on Ginn's fumble (Ginn got screwed twice by the zebras), the "quick whistle" on D'Andrea's fumble (and then a re-kick? ), the blown call on the instant replay which denied a Hoosier receiver a clear catch - and those were just the most blatant miscues. If the officiating has ever been worse than today, then (fortunately) I haven't seen it. The best that can be said is that the bizarre calls affected both teams more or less equally (and ultimately didn't much matter in a blow out)."

I was at the game, and you just about summed it up. Some of the worst officiating Ive ever seen in college football. It seemed like those morons were all doing their first ever game....like they had no clue what was going on out there.

I too would encourage fans to go to Bloomington for a game. The atmosphere is laid back and the IU fans are friendly.
While looking for a place to eat before the game, an IU parking attendant pointed us to "the tent with the green balloons, where the governor is giving away free food". Sure enough, the governor was at the game and the Republican party was giving away free chicken, hot dogs, hamburgers, and drinks. The drinks included free beer! At tOSU you get arrested for having an open container. At IU, the freaking governor is giving beer away!
It was a lot of fun, and you should try to go at least once.

Was he also giving away free tickets to the wedding of his son?

Does sound like it was all a college gameday should be about though. Good recommendation- hope more of us can get a chance to go the next road game at IU.

One of the PI calls against Youboty was a smart move by Ashton.

He was clearly beat, the ball was well thrown, and it would have been a 40 yard completion had he not grabbed the receivers arms.

I agree, I didn't think the PI calls were anything to worry about. If nothing else I like how aggressive Youboty is playing. If you are getting beat it is always smarter to take the PI call, it will help keep the other team from getting into a rhythm, and it will frustrate the receiver. I like aggressive play like that, I would rather take 2 PI calls a game than a receiver that catches 8 passes for 130 yards.

My thought...our defense is still scary.

We better get past these mental errors. We need to start dominating the turnover war.

Finally, Indiana had a freshamn QB. I could not understand why we were not blitzing more. We had them starting inside their own 15 several times. I kept waiting for our guys to blitz the shit out of their young QB to cause a turnover, but soft coverage assignments were called until they got out of the red zone.
