Should semipro/college players be paid, or allowed to sell their stuff? (NIL and Revenue Sharing)

Texas and California schools are going rise while others slip. More money and better weather are tough things to beat, in the long run.

The top 10 players on these teams might be upset, but the other 90 (including walkons etc) may appreciate the benefits of official employment status.
i was joking...

i get it. and not just the 90 other football players, but also almost all the other athletes on all the other sports teams (with the exception of a couple of men's BB players).

this is the same group that tried to help the players at NW form a union. they are changing their approach this time.

I thought that was a specific Union that was trying to get their foot in the door.
I dont know that joining Steelworkers makes sense for NCAA athletes or Northwestern, but i do think that - just like NFL, NBA, MLB - a player's association is inevitable.

Can't stop thinking NCAA should have taken that shot across the bow a lot more seriously, but they decided to gladhand and arrogantly declare a victory when Northwestern students decided not to unionize.

it's the same guy (huma) and the same group (NCPA)...

EDIT: i'm not a lawyer, but... the result in the NW case wasn't because the students decided not to unionize. it was the NLRB that punted on the decision - ie saying that it was not in its jurisdiction to decide whether the students could for a union or not. but i'm also not sure it's the NCAA's deal to handle since these can involve other students (non-athletes) as well.

I saw that about $4.5 mio was raised yesterday by selling 45,000 Trump trading cards at $99 each. They're not physical trading cards. They were on the blockchain, so they're NFTs.

I'm not raising this from a politics angle. I'm more interested in the NIL angle and the Foundation and the Collective trying to raise funds.

Didn't one of the players have an NFT at some point last year? Was it Olave?

Can't the NIL raise money through Coach / Player NFTs? Woody NFT? Hartline NFT? Brutus NFT?

NLRB making moves again. Going after USC, PAC, and NCAA.
No way the freeforall for the last little while was going to last.
Question is how do we stay on top of the chaos.

I thought this was interesting when I saw it yesterday. It may get appealed to death, but organizations are going to keep trying to apply guardrails. I have a buddy who's a lobbyist and he doesn't see Congress touching this or getting close to enough votes. And they would put this low on their priority list.
IMO, CFB earns too much money to ignore, and ADs and Presidents are pulling their hair out with things already on their plates. NIL is making an even bigger headache. I just feel that even if it's not congress to step in, someone(s) will step in and regulate this thing. I just don't see long term how so many suits will sit back and let kids make millions, and still hide behind the "pursuit of higher learning"

If they can unionize then you could create a new organization (the current P5 let's say in place of the NCAA) make rules that fit the modern realities and collectively bargain with the athletes. The new league governs itself just like the NFL, MLB, NBA and NHL do. Member entities that used to skirt the NCAA rules aggressively (SEC) have a voice in the new rules and hopefully there are real mechanisms for enforcement. Basically you get a chance to get every aligned through their own self interest instead of them being more motivated to break stupid or unenforceable rules. They would also have to be careful with things that could be in violation of the Collective Bargaining Agreement.

This might actually be a positive step. Who knows?
