Should Penn State Suspend Its Football Program?

Should Penn State Suspend Its Football Program?

It should be suspend or atleast be suspended from bowl play until the investigations conclude. No one knows the full scope of how bad this was. The testimony of other coaches showering with boys along with Sandusky + the Paterno cover up is disturbing. It shows their was a epidemic, investigators should know how bad it was and take it from there. This is more important then football.

I went with Maybe. But I haven't seen a convincing argument for doing so only b/c we don't have all the info yet. I'd like to see the rest of the PSU internal emails as well as the Freeh report. The one thing always in the back of my mind is the two PSU players who told police that the head coach sent texts to them stating not to talk to the police.

I went with "No"......because a suspension implies that they would eventually be reinstated. I vote for disassemble, disband, and dismember.

The top 4 guys are all gone.
The university President gone.
The Vice- President gone!
The Athletic Director gone!
The icon coach is gone! With most of the coaching staff.
And the NCAA will have tons of evidence to look at from various investigations which for Ped State is not good at all! They have been hiding stuff for years.
That should change the athletic department pretty dramatically.

I would, and I would precisely because I would consider it absolutely necessary for the university to reassert control over an out of control football program, a warped and self-destructive culture and to get its [censored]ing priorities straight.

There are two situations to be dealt with at Ped Aggy. The first is about what to do with individuals who broke the law. The second and larger situation at Ped Aggy is not about individuals. Though granted Paterno's long tenure and apparent megalomania was a primary catalyst for it, the other issue at Ped Aggy was one of a complete and dysfunctional lack of institutional control over the football program. A situation came into being where the needs of the football program and its coach took primacy over any and all other institutional considerations--including putting a stop to child rape in its own facilities. You don't fix that by punishing a few individuals. You fix it by tearing the program down and starting from scratch.

Okay, so you're talking about shutting it down and then turning it back on?

That would be fine with me... even a year or two would be fine.

OTOH...

They can't shut it down forever... because, then, somehow, the Pedsters would make up some BS narrative about how they'd dominate the ______ (b1G, nation, sun belt, whatever) if they HAD a football team.

I honestly think... they don't need to shut it down, and the program, university, etc should all suffer together... if you guys want to sew the earth with salt and napalm the place, that's fine.

But, what I really think needs to happen is... they need to suck, and I just don't see any getting around it, honestly what with all the good pub, recruting, and top notch coaching staff they've got... not to mention the 'de-emphasis' on football... plus if they suck it will demphasize itself.

If they close it for 4 years and bring it back, a lot of the smoke will have cleared and they might freshly embrace the thing... who knows, might catch on to a hot young coach, and quickly recrtuit in a bunch of guys on the "new" factor...

No, best to let it wither on the vine in purgatory I think.

Maybe. Briefly. Symbolically. As an act of community.

I'm not a fan of a B1G program, but I chose the option above.
I would forfeit the 2012 season as an act of contrition and to allow for the investigations (internal and external) to proceed immediately without distraction.
Wrap up the legal details ASAP and then let normal athletic competition resume.

A caveat to the above - exhisting scholarship athletes should not lose a year of eligibility during the suspension. Seniors can come back and play a final season...etc

I voted no.

I think that there should be an investigation by the authorities including the NCAA.

I think that this episode is the definition of lack of institutional control.

I think that after the investigation then whatever consequence is deemed necessary/appropriate should be implemented.

Any players that want to transfer should be allowed to do so without penalty.

I'm not sure what good suspending the football program would do. Not even sure why that would be an option as all the players in this gruesome situation are not with the program anymore.

Penn State should do nothing ..I don't trust them..I'd rather everything play out with all Info and evidence disclosed and examined..by the Feds, NCAA and whoever else might have jurisdiction. Letting PSU off the hook with some kind of self imposed penalties doesn't allow the total sanitation that needs to occur in Slappy Valley and PSU.

In a normal situation you would be right.

Unfortunately we are talking about an institution where all of the underlings who will move up to fill the empty positions are from the exact same insulated group.

that's where I'm at. I used to want them out of the Big Ten.....then I realized without us and Mich/Wisc/Iowa to knock them around they'd actually have decent seasons. imagine them in the Big East. ugh.

This!

Read the alumni candidates for trustees that were linked in the other thread. The overwhelming majority ran on a platform of:

  1. Joe did nothing wrong, and the university needs to honor him and publicly apologize for firing him.
  2. There needs to be MORE alumni voted members of the board.

This is not a group that is going to self-regulate. The culture is just too sick, insular, inbred and wrapped up in the Paterno mythology. I think the football program just needs to go away for a few years; otherwise, these people can never begin to reset their priorities.

Then again, I also think the CIC, AAU and accrediting agencies should step in and make a clean sweep of the place and bring true outsiders in to run it. If Ped Aggy puts up a fight, kick them out of the CIC and AAU and revoke their accreditation. They can go back to being the Farm College that they were before Glorious Dear Leader Pa Joe Il made them best Nation's University.

I'm just curious..for the 23 that voted NO..and the 9 that voted MAYBE...Would your opinion change any if these idiots show up for the first game?

It's obvious that the "FANBASE" at PSU thinks he's a fucking saint. Do you really want these people showing up in Columbus every year? By every year I mean other sports as well..I'll admit that when this first came out I didn't want to believe JP was involved.....I was fucking wrong. It seems to me that this is beyond LOIC...this is IIOC...Institutional Involvement of Corruption.

I say Fuck PSU..let them go to the Big Easy and be champs..there is no respect for that conference anyway..I'd much rather smack them down every once in awhile instead of having to see them every year.

On a side note...do you think that a "Beef O' Bouillon Butt Chin" mask will be made available anytime soon?
