Should Penn State Suspend Its Football Program?

Should Penn State Suspend Its Football Program?

I don't think SMU's fate is a good predictor of how PSU would fare even with a 2 year suspension. SMU was not a traditional power, played in a pretty watered down SWC, and was only competitve in the first place, because they cheated. PSU might very well be able to field a competitive team in a lot less time than people think.

Shut 'em down, I say...

Without JoePa they should just shut the whole thing down. It's not like Penn State has any other reason to exist and Sandusky ruined decades of history with one shower.

Burn in hell, Jerry!

It was much more than one shower.

Honestly, I am not sure the NCAA should get involved with federal crimes, but this surely is no ordinary occurrence. The top men at Penn State protected such a pathetic and disgusting man in order to protect the program, so I feel they win if it isn't suspended for a year or two.

I'll be shocked beyond words if ped aggy were to receive any death penalty. At this point, we're six weeks out from kickoff. If anything were to happen, it needs to happen fast. I can't see that happening.

When we on this board call for them to shut it down it means nothing.

When sports writers from Yahoo call for them to shut it down it means little.

When the air heads on ESPN call for them to shut it down people start to pay a little more attention.

When you are called out to shut it down on Meet the Press things change.

I did not see the Costas' segment, but I would presume his point is broader than just Penn State. If college football accepts Penn State as a football program this fall we ALL share the black eye.

Revenue is not an issue.
Scheduling is not an issue.
Student athletes are not an issue.

The Penn State football culture - as an extension of the shared national football culture - provides the context for what happened to these children. It lies is at the heart of the matter.

To allow that program to move forward unfettered, to suggest that we can fire people, that we can imprison people, that we can pay out millions in settlements - but that we can not miss the game with Ohio U - that is to miss the point entirely. That is to expose the lie. That is to reveal our true values.

Do children come before football? It is that damn simple.

And 9:00 AM on September 1st is not too late.

I still think it's sad that Game 2 is the Navy game and "Military Appreciation Day" in State College.

We appreciate the Military, but child's welfare...not so much.

Some columnists have suggested Navy refuse to play Penn State, but that contract's been done for a while.

How about this, if Penn State doesn't want to shut down football:
1. They get 0 scholarships, starting this season.
2. Players are allowed to transfer anywhere, without sitting out a year.
3. Schools that accept a PSU transfer get an extra scholarship to make room for the PSU transfer. There should probably be a maximum per team. 2 or 3.
4. PSU should have to pay for the scholarships to the players' new schools.
5. All money made in football (before it goes to fund any other sports teams) goes to some foundation for abused kids.
6. Maybe all scholarship athletes from all sports should also be allowed to transfer.

That's a start...

If using a collegiate player (your star defensive player, for that matter) to lure little boys onto campus for Sandusky to prey on doesn't get the NCAA involved, I don't know what will.

This article, much like every other piece of evidence in this case, makes me [censored]ing sick.

Good for Arrington. For any human being, finding out that you were the bait for a child predator has to be fucking monstrous burden to deal with.

Courageous of him to be speaking out against the cult.

I agree, 100%. But we know the pull the almighty $ has...and this involves a lot of $$$. I'll be shocked if the people in the positions to make these calls don't put $$$ first.

I guess I should have included that in my post, but I was so disgusted with this article that my demeanor was geared toward the suspending of it's football program.

IMO, this is the worst thing that's happened surrounding college football since SMU, and may be even worse.

It's much worse. SMU was some kids getting free Trans-Ams. This is preteens getting diddled by an enormous monster.

At this point I'm just interested to see what kind of stance the NCAA takes and what they do and don't punish. They've got plenty of evidence/infractions to choose from.

I don't want PSU shut down. No way. They suck and it's a win for OSU. Take down the statue, vacate the wins for the last 14 years and whack them with Scholarships and bowl games for 5 years. Have the Paterno family pay the $ 100M estimate for victims. That will be justice.
