USC a definite visit stop for Floyd

By Phil Kornblut
DL Sharrif Floyd (6-3 311) of Philadelphia has two more official visits to take, and USC definitely will be one of those visits according to his advisor, George Washington High assistant coach Andre Odom. "After the season he definitely will visit South Carolina and North Carolina, unless something changes," Odom said. "Right now, he's focusing on his guys. It's all about his teammates. He does not have favorites. He's doing some serious evaluations." Floyd is scheduled right now to visit North Carolina December 11th. That date is fluid because of Floyd's playoff schedule. He has taken official visits to Florida, Southern Cal and Ohio State. He also visited Penn State unofficially during the season. Odom said Floyd is in regular contact with USC recruiter GA Mangus who calls weekly. Floyd also initiates calls to Mangus according to Odom.

Just curious, how does Floyd compare with Corey Adams from last year?

Different types of players in my opinion...although both are extremely athletic for their size. To me, Adams projected [at least at OSU] as a DE/DT much like Cam Heyward, whereas Floyd is a true DT (although from what I understand Adams has been playing exclusively DT at ASU). Scout talks about how Floyd might be the most athletic DT out of PA since Callahan Bright (and for those that remember Bright, that is VERY high praise). Despite being heavier, Floyd is a touch quicker and more explosive than Adams and that is one of the reasons I think he is rated a little higher by recruiting services than Adams was. From what I can tell on film, Floyd has a bit wider base which allows him to carry a little more weight (some of which is not good body weight). Both got by in high school on brute strength and good punch off the ball but both will benefit from more advanced coaching that they will get in college.

Grad can probably answer that question with a little more technical specificity...

The best part of the "osu-bound" chatter is that it's coming from all sides, from UM, UF, PA, USC and other insiders.

The only thing better than that is Floyd is hungry to improve. A lot of superstar recruits can buy into their headlines, but he recognizes his flaws.

Hankins and Floyd, love it... over 600lbs of stuffing.

I would be estatic if we could land Floyd. Dude is a beast and could possibly see early playing time with tOSU having four DL (Rose, Worthington, Wilson, Denlinger) leaving this year. Worthington and Denlinger primarily played the interior with Rose and Wilson also spending a lot of playing time on the inside as well. Floyd would be a needed and welcomed addition. Hankins would bring added depth and talent which we could also use.

Defensive tackles are heavy favorites

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

Sharrif Floyd could go to any college next fall and instantly be one of the biggest men on campus. At 6 feet 3, "300-something pounds," as he puts it, the senior at George Washington High School in Philadelphia would attract attention regardless.

His resume is impressive. He is considered the top defensive-tackle prospect in the country by Rivals.com, and the No.8 prospect overall. In other words, he is highly sought by college coaches, including those from Ohio State, Florida, Southern California, North Carolina, South Carolina and, lately, Nebraska. "I'm doing research on them now," Floyd said of the Cornhuskers.

As for Floyd, what's to research?

"Everybody wants a defensive tackle like that," said longtime recruiting analyst Bill Kurelic of Bucknuts.com.

Floyd is working his way through the process with a definite point of view.

"Most of all, I am looking for honesty," Floyd said. "I'm looking for a straightforward coach who will tell me what it is, tell me what it's going to be.

"Let me know how I fit into your program. Tell me if you're going to redshirt me. Tell me everything that's going to go on."

He will be looking for the same direction on the practice field, he said.

"Tell me if you think I've got to work on something," Floyd said. "Don't just tell me, 'You're a good all-around player who has nothing to improve.' I know I have stuff to work on, and as my position coach, you need to help me work on it."

Maybe others see Floyd as an a elite prospect, but "I see myself as a normal football player who is trying to do what any football player is trying to do, and that's make it to the next level, and then hopefully make it to the highest level," he said. "I'm just out here trying to get in where I fit in, and I'll be set."

Any recruiter would make room for Floyd, who plans to make his college choice public during the U.S. Army All-American game on Jan.9 in San Antonio. Although he said he doesn't brag, he does know what he's bringing to the dance.

"What I can say is I am 300-something pounds, and you don't find many freshmen who will come in 300-something pounds and as well-fit as I am," Floyd said. "I bring a high motor and hard-work approach.

"And from the last five years that I've been playing football, I think I've found out that's all you really need, is a high motor and hard work. That will take you far."

This kid seems very mature for his age. He doesn't seem like he's caught up with the hype of the recruiting circus. I'm hoping he commits sooner rather than later to S&G and we finally have a Glenn Dorsey/Terrance Cody type DT who wrecks havoc in the middle.

By comparing him to those 2 I hope you mean it as a dominant, and not that he plays like them. Both are very different DT's. Cody is your typical behemeth 350+ lb Nose Tackle, while Dorsey and Floyd could probably be similar as pass rushing DT's. Floyd could be perfect as a 3-4 DE next to the LEO, the type of role that Worthington and Rose both play right now.
