LUTHER MUHAMMAD HAS THE BEST CHANCE TO BE OHIO STATE'S NEXT NBA DRAFT PICK

Keita Bates-Diop became the first Buckeye since D'Angelo Russell in 2015 to be drafted into the NBA last week when the Minnesota Timberwolves selected him with the No. 48 overall pick on Thursday night.

Bates-Diop's fall into the late second round came as a bit of a surprise to some, but the former Buckeye will still get his chance to make the Timberwolves' roster as one of two new rookies in the Land of 10,000 Lakes, joining Josh Okogie from Georgia Tech.

With Bates-Diop onto the next level, Ohio State's roster is much younger, but does boast some potential to send more players to the NBA.

The Buckeyes' best chance at sending another player to the next level by way of the draft, at least in the opinion of this writer, has yet to play a game in Columbus.

Luther Muhammad has perhaps the highest ceiling of any player on Ohio State's 2018-19 roster. His athleticism at the guard position and his ability to create his own shot offensively makes him instantly a prospect for the next level.

In addition, Muhammad is an elite defender for his age, a talent that will also make him attractive to NBA scouts. At 6-foot-4, he has good but not great size for a shooting guard, but his style of play translates well to the next level.

He already has experience playing against NBA talent, as Muhammad played a part in shutting down former Alabama guard and Cleveland Cavaliers draft pick Collin Sexton in a 2016 matchup between their two high schools. Muhammad scored 16 points in a 65-51 win over Sexton's Pebblebrook team that also resulted in video that has since gone viral.



When you look at Ohio State's current roster, there isn't another name that jumps off the page as a sure-fire NBA prospect. C.J. Jackson made tremendous strides from year one to year two as a Buckeye, but doesn't appear to bring the elite level of athleticism that is required to play in the NBA.

During his press conference after the Ohio State basketball recruiting class of 2018 signed their letters of intent, Chris Holtmann had some strong words regarding guards Luther Muhammad and Duane Washington.

“Duane is a prolific shooter,” Holtmann said about Washington. “He’s a very capable shooter. He’s high level when it comes to that. He can make plays with the ball in his hands, and he can facilitate for others.”

Holtmann also had something to add on Muhammad. “Luther’s versatility defensively is terrific. I really believe he can guard three positions for sure. [Muhammad and Washington] complement each other very well I think, because we obviously anticipate playing the two of them together quite a bit."

The two guards were at the epicenter of the action on Wednesday night, when Ohio State traveled the 90 minutes down I-71 and defeated the Cincinnati Bearcats 64-56.

Of course, this was not an ordinary game. Cincinnati was opening the remodeled Fifth Third Arena, and the arena was at full capacity for what was the first matchup between these schools on a campus since 1920.

Cincinnati, despite losing three of their top four scorers from a year ago, still came into the season with lofty expectations, with AAC coaches predicting the Bearcats to finish second in the conference.

In addition, Ohio State came in to the game as 5.5 point underdogs, according to Vegas Insider.

It makes it all the more impressive then to learn that Muhammad and Washington combined for 48 minutes with just one turnover.

Muhammad was Ohio State's most highly touted 2018 recruit, and he didn't disappoint in his debut, recording 11 points and playing phenomenal tight defense.

One play, however, showed just the kind of competitor that Muhammad is: after Cincinnati's Jarron Cumberland hit a three-pointer in Muhammad's face, Muhammad raced down to the other end and made one himself. After the play, Muhammad said to Cumberland, "right back at you," and gave Cumberland a staredown. Muhammad earned a technical foul for his efforts.

Chris Holtmann, although not pleased with the technical, praised Muhammad's work overall. "He was great. Luther is a tremendous competitor. That's why we recruited him, because he brings a competitive spirit."

To get a technical for this is really lame. Sort of like the "official" who called the technical. Guy must have rabbit ears. However, Luther needs to put his vocals in check in front of the officials:wink: I do not want him to back down but just to be smart and let the other player let him know what he is thinking when the official does not have his rabbit ears on.
