HoopHall Monday: Bossi's takeaways

DEFENSE ISN'T LOST IN HIGH SCHOOL BASKETBALL

If anybody has any issues about the commitment to giving effort and competing on the defensive end at the high school level, they would have been pleased to see some of the elite defensive players at the HoopHall Classic. Especially when it comes to defending the perimeter.

After watching several standout wing and on the ball defenders on Saturday and Sunday, I was blown away by the defensive efforts of Ohio State bound four-star senior Luther Muhammad and top 50 junior Jahmius Ramsey.

Hudson Catholic had Baltimore (Md.) John Carroll scouted about as well as any high school team could possibly scout another, but it still takes execution from the players to make it work. Faced with the task of stopping five-star point guard Immanuel Quickley, Muhammad got physical, dug in and really made the Kentucky-bound Quickley work for everything he got. Because he's a stud with pride himself, Quickley went to his jump shot more and made some nice things happen in the second half, but the tone Muhammad set early left a huge mark on the game and gave his team momentum they never let go. For my money, Muhammad is as good a perimeter defender as there is in the class of 2018 and he may one day compete for Defensive Player of the Year in the Big Ten.

Muhammad talks big win, excited about future at Ohio State
JERSEY CITY, N.J. - Ohio State basketball signee talks about his team's big win this week, his thoughts on the Buckeyes this season, and where he fits in next year
JERSEY CITY - In watching Hudson Catholic struggle with St. Peter's Prep throughout the game on Tuesday evening, you would never know that the powerhouse program from New Jersey featured three top 100 nationally ranked players. Take into account that the team was playing for the second game in a row (fourth game in six days), and had to travel back from the Basketball Hall-of-Fame in Springfield, Massachusetts the night before, their up-and-down performance can be excused. Plus, when the final buzzer sounded, it was Hudson Catholic that was victorious, advancing to 8-3 overall and 4-0 in the league, with a 55-47 win.

One of the stars of the program, Ohio State signee Luther Muhammad, spoke about coming out on the right side of the tough stretch his team just went through.

"We’re definitely a little worn out, playing two games back-to-back," the star guard told Bucknuts. Having St. Peter's tonight, and then John Carroll (MD) yesterday, it was tough. Our mindset coming in here today was to just tell ourselves this is how it’s going to be next year when we’re freshmen in college. This is how it’s going to be at the next level, and you have to come and show up every game, no matter what. Our mindset was to come in, play our heart out, and get the win no matter what."

Speaking of next year, Muhammad will be playing for the Buckeyes, who are off to a good start themselves, at 16-4 on the year, and 7-0 in the Big Ten. The star guard is excited about what his future teammates are doing in Columbus.
