SG Luther Muhammad (transfer to Arizona St.)

ON THE COURT
Just like we saw with Ledee and Washington, Muhammad’s greatest asset is his ability to score. He’s the best pure scorer of the bunch, and the only one with a truly defined position: he’s a shooting guard, through and through. Capable of beating defenses in a bevy of ways, Muhammad is at his best off of the pass, either as a sharp shooter or slasher, and has one of the best shooting strokes of any recruit in the nation.

His mixture of athleticism and high-level shooting talent make Muhammad a very viable offensive threat, but he’s also very active defensively. He averaged two steals per game as a junior last season, and has the size to guard anyone the rigorous Big Ten schedule throws at him.

Muhammad’s ceiling is sky-high. Ohio State has put a coaching staff in place that excels at developing players, and while he’s likely not a one-and-done type, Luther Muhammad could be an all-Big Ten player if he develops correctly. He’s the best pure scorer Ohio State has landed since D’Angelo Russell.

AWESOME! What a huge commitment, this one is probably the one I am most excited about in the CH era. Gives us a big time scorer, hard worker and a kid that seems like will make a big stride in changing the culture of our BB program. I can't beat the other GIFs already placed in here, but I will just express my absolute joy to see us land Luther (and also invite Kenny G to the GIF parade in the basketball forum). Welcome aboard and Go Bucks!

congrats to luther. I think what we can expect is roughly jordan sibert. Now before people think I am downplaying luther, jordan had a rough start here, but ended up leading dayton's e8 team in scoring as a junior and was first team a10 as a senior. I see a lot of similarities between the two.

I see where you are coming from in that they are SGs with roughly similar builds/athleticism, but they are still pretty different players. Sibert had more of a shooter's rep out of HS than Luther has (though Luther is efficient shooting the ball in low volume). Luther is a bit better at ballhandling, slashing, passing, and shows way more appetite for D. I think his first couple years we might not see a ton of offense out of Luther but I think we will instantly see more defensive commitment and excellence then we got from Sibert.

agreed. biggest difference between sibert and muhammad? defense. sibert was certainly a poor shooter as a freshman and sophomore, but it was his lackluster defense that matta found most upsetting. this will not be the case for muhammad. if for no other reason, that is why luther will absolutely get big minutes his first season.

as far as offense goes, there are substantial differences between the two, at least when projecting muhammad. as a junior and senior, 60% of sibert's attempts were 3-pointers. he averaged under 2 assists. he was mostly a jump shooter. muhammad, on the other hand, is best when breaking down the defender. he's certainly a solid outside shooter, but i think he'll end up putting the ball on the court a bit more than sibert did. both muhammad and washington have the tools to be dynamic point guards while likely being most threatening when playing off the ball.

I think Sibert was a much better defender than we remember from his first 2 years here. I don't know that he was entirely recovered from his knee injury as a frosh and he certainly let his offense affect his defensive effort as a soph which is why he lost his spot. But, those 2 Dayton teams he played on were known for their tough defense and he wasn't a weak link in that regard at all on those teams. Luther certainly has a reputation as a hard nosed defender and will probably be better in some regard, but I think Sibert was better than is being remembered.

Agree on Muhammad being a better ball handler and can probably fill in some at the point and Sibert a better shooter. I don't know how much he will be able to get into the lane and score in the B1G when the defense is bigger and more athletic. He's maybe 6'4" at best with good quickness, but not a great leaper. I don't expect him to score as much as Sibert did as an upper classman, but part of the point of the post was that Sibert started slow and ended up a very good player. I tend to think Luther isn't going to score a whole lot early on, but is going to be a very good player here.

I disagree that Washington and Muhammad currently have the tools to be dynamic point guards. I think they have enough skills to facilitate and help out at the point, but I don't see either as primarily a lead guard.
