Most freshmen, including some of Ohio State’s first-year players, enjoy offense more than other parts of the game. They like to shoot and score, and it’s understandable. Offense comes easy to those who have dominated the ball throughout their youth and can immediately translate to the college game.

But Luther Muhammad, a fellow freshman guard, has done the math. He’s made his calculation and he chooses to focus his energy primarily on defense. It’s his passion.

“Everyone who plays basketball likes to score, but what is scoring if your guy is also scoring?” Muhammad said. “It's better when you score and also you're getting a stop and your man's not scoring, because if you score 20 and your man scores 20, you really ain't score.”

Muhammad didn’t score 20 points on Saturday in Ohio State’s 107-61 victory against Purdue Fort Wayne on Saturday. He had a respectable 12 points, making 4-of-8 shots, and added a pair of assists.

He made his biggest impact on the defensive end of the court, shadowing John Konchar, a 6-foot-5, 205-pound guard who has been first-team All-Summit League the past three seasons. Konchar, who entered the game averaging 21 points per game, managed just 13 points in 37 minutes. He hit just 6-of-15 shots, including 1-of-4 3-pointers, and had three turnovers.

“He was terrific,” Holtmann said of Muhammad's defense. “He was important on him because he just made him work, moved his feet, made him earn it.”

Don't believe he's a one-and-done, but it's early yet. Don't see anyone that 'takes over the game', but see plenty of role players that seem to rise to the occasion when needed. Win over Cincy was inspiring, and gritty for a team so young and new to each other. PS, loved seeing Joey Lane bang in a three and get several assists. Believe he'd be a star at a MAC school. Go Bucks!

Ohio State basketball’s freshmen have been ready from day one

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Late in the second half of Ohio State's win over South Carolina State, one of the Bulldogs players drove baseline for a chance to score.

Ohio State’s Jaedon LeDee met the player at the rim and sent the ball back the other way, igniting a fast break for the Buckeyes.

Luther Muhammad recovered the ball and made his way down the court with Duane Washington Jr. running ahead on the opposite side. The two made eye contact and Muhammad lobbed the ball up to Washington Jr., who finished with a tip-in with a chance to go to the free throw line for a three-point play.

That sequence sums up the way that Ohio State’s freshmen are playing to start off their college careers. The Buckeyes are only four games into their season, but head coach Chris Holtmann says that each of his freshmen has been as good as advertised.

“I think all four of them in practice have been kind of what we thought in terms of their productivity and how capable we thought they could be," Holtmann said. “Especially the two guards (Muhammad and Washington) because that’s where we had less depth. They were going to be forced into the issue earlier than the other two.”

Muhammad has started in all four games this season, averaging 9.8 points per game while being one of the team’s best perimeter defenders, while Washington is averaging 12.3 points off the bench, including 57.9 percent from 3-point range. He’s scored in double figures in all but one game this season, including a season-high 20 points in a 107-61 win over Purdue Fort Wayne in the home opener. That game, he made 6 of 9 from 3-point range



Holtmann said that he knows that though his freshmen have started out strong, they’ll eventually go through rough patches, but that so far each has lived up to the expectations the coaching staff had for them.

“I’m also very aware that they are all going to go through ups and downs and they’re going to hit stretches where they’ll be like ‘whoa this is a long season’,” Holtmann said. “But I thought they’d all be able to have an impact.”
