SG Jon Diebler (2nd-Most Big Ten career 3-Pointers, Butler Recruiting Director)

Any critics should be held to account on the day when Jon Diebler's game hits. He will then make the naysayers look very foolish.

I for one hope that happens within this same season in which he suffered the negative posts.

As poor as his stats presently look, once he hits his groove it'll be like lights going on.

I would like to see Jon with more movement off the ball, if for nothing more then his rhythm. Basketball is a game of rhythm and repetition. If he can get a few easy buckets in the lane, or drive and dish, His confidence will grow and he'll hit the shots he's suppose to knock down. Like one other poster said "he's use to shooting every 50 seconds, and needs to adjust to shooting every 5 minutes." Staying active an the backside, and without the ball would only help. I think Jon will come around sooner then later. Big players always do. Go Bucks!

I agree that he needs to do more moving off the ball but that is not really within our offense right now, he finds the open spots when the other players penetrate, but we use more pick n rolls, and he needs to spot up off of those and it would also benefit him if we had a post presence because he could passes out of double team...

I also like his ability to drive to the hole when he shows that...

It was nice to see him knock down that 3 last night, I just hope that it ables him to take off again...

IMO Jon's biggest problem is that he doesn't have the quickness yet against this level of competition to get open for his mid range shots and layups so he is forced to shoot mainly 3's which is why he isn't scoring more and his confidence has dropped because of that.

I disagree he doesn't have the quickness to get open, he has shown his ability to get to the hole and to get his shot off over guys, but he is not forcing the issue, just playing within the offense...

I will give you that it is not as easy as it was for him in high school, but it isn't for anyone...His quickness is not hurting his game any tho, IMO...It is just confidence...

Interesting to read all the arguments about Diebler's sound play. But who are we kidding? There are lots of kids who can play sound BBall. Diebler got the offer because he is 6' 6" and can drill the three.

Fact is that he has hit 6 of 24 in the past 5 games. That is 12.5%. In the three losses he was 1 of 18 - or not quite 6%. SIX PERCENT!!! That isn't not being quick enough (a 6'6" guard shouldn't have to be that quick or that open to get off a good shot) or not planting your feet or even a lack of confidence. 6% is flat horrid.

Hit a woeful 20% and we change the outcome of 2, maybe all 3, of those losses. It is tough to argue he has not hurt the team in those games.

That said, it is what it is. My confidence that he will come around before season's end is beginning to waiver. My belief that before his career is done he will become a key part of this offense is as strong as ever.

Keep shooting John.

Gotta say, I agree completely. I'm sure he's a great kid and has a great understanding of the game as others have mentioned. But his game is his 3 ball. Great shooters keep shooting. And they fight through the rough spells. But Diebs has been in a rough spell for while now.

That's why Matta gets paid the big bucks. You tell your Frosh to go out there and keep shooting cause you believe in him. But shooting 12% is really hurting the team...so what do you do? Not a fun job.

Maybe we all just had visions of a Buckeye JJ Redick drilling 3 after 3. I also, still think Jon will have a fine career here..just might not be this year.

6/24 = 25%...

He was 0-4 vs Iowa, 0-5 vs Purdue, 0-5 vs MSU, 0-4 vs UT then he was 1-1 last night...

That makes 1/19 in his last 5 games...

He did get to the line 4 times vs Iowa and 4 times vs Purdue where he went 8-8...This shows his ability to get to the rim and get fouled...I really thought the charge call that went against him in the UT game hurt his confidence early in the game and it was a horrid call, as the guy clearly slid under him when he was in the air...I thought it was a no brainer...

Typo on my part - should have been 3 of 24. I was using all shots, not just three pointers.

That is what I kinda figured...But you could also put the 4 games before that probably and see a streak that was the total opposite...

It is just amplified due to the fact that we lost and were really searching for offense, and that fact that he missed the 3 down the stretch at UT...Remember 3 of the games were on the road in hostile environments...

I was trying to remember and all I can remember is him shooting from 3 land or along the baseline. I can't remember the last time I saw him drive around or get a shot at the key. I always said he would find it tougher in college, but I have faith he will turn it around.

As a Couple People have said give Diebler some time. No one can shoot like that in high school and lose it all in eight months. Everybody is trying to analyze what is wrong with him and as some have said he just needs some time to adjust. Why don't we just lay off of him for a while or quite a few of us will be eating our words:wink2:

When you're shooting as poorly as Diebler is at the high-D1 level, you can't expect people to "lay off."

I like the young man's game generally, but if he doesn't start hitting the J he must sit.

It looks like that is what Matta is doing. He only played 13 minutes against Illinois which was his lowest total of the year. I thought it was odd that he played so few minutes since he made his first 3.

Of course, His minutes might have been affected by the fact that both Turner and Lighty were playing so well. You would figure that there is about 80 minutes to split between these three players. In the past it seemed like the minutes were evenly distributed 20-25 minutes to each (with Lighty playing the most minutes). Since Turner has cranked up his game, he has been playing over 30 minutes a game. Those minutes have to come at the expense of someone else, with Lighty playing so well against illinois, Diebler got the pine.
