SG Jon Diebler (2nd-Most Big Ten career 3-Pointers, Butler Recruiting Director)

Bucky Katt;1068384; said:
Not to diminish his fundamentally sound play, but Diebler hasn't been put into too many positions where he's at a high risk of turning the ball over. Butler and Turner handle the ball a lot more often and Turner and Lighty do most of the one-on-one dribbling & penetrating (what little there is :p). When the ball goes to him, usually in the corner, it will be a shot or maybe a couple dribbles up to the wing before a pass out top. When he has pump-faked and penetrated is when he seems to turn the ball over.

That being said, he doesn't seem to make as many of the "lazy" passes that some of the other players have been making. Not as much of a lackadaisical attitude what should be routine passes. The Northwestern game comes to mind as one where too many passes were just lolly-gagged around, not crisp at all.

I know what you are saying, but when he does put the ball on the floor he at least knows he has to dribble before he can move his pivot foot...Something I am not sure that Turner has figured out quite yet...Also I think alot of Diebler being good with the ball is he realizes when to attack and when not to, and doesnt put guys that he is passing to in a bad position in terms of having to come meet the ball, etc...I can express enough how well I think that Diebler understands the game...

Lets not just put that on Turner. Lighty has had his fair share over a little traveling music and I think he is a sophomore. Back to Jon.

Deibler has taken 46 more shots on the year than Turner and has made 5 less field goals than Turner.

Turner also has 4 more steals and 4 more assists, and 10 more rebounds and 1 more block.

If Diebler knows the game so well he'll stop shooting and understand that a 27% 3 pt shooter shouldnt be taking 5 3's a game.

Turner's 1.1 turnovers more a game than Diebler is much more workable and understandable since he is handling the ball much more often.

Please read the Columbus Dispatch article referenced in post #596 and you will understand what Diebler brings to the table. He understands the game much more than Turner. Turner might be more athletic but he does not understand the game like Jon. Right now, Turner needs to slow down and let the game come to him a little. I don't think you understand what someone means when a player understands the game.

DUDE GTFOH...You have been exposed so many time, it is laughable...

IF you knew anything about bball other than looking at statistics, then maybe I would listen, but ther eis a reason why Diebler is taking more shots than Turner, it is because he is getting open for them...And IMO if you are talking about 4 assists, and 10 rebounds that is not that much of a difference...

Everyone on here besides you has realized that we need both of them to play well to be successful...

We all Jon punked you when in high school...

The only thing that bothers me about Diebler right now is his lack of reads and movement on the back side of the offense. He's content to just float back and forth, whereas, if he just moved a little more and read his defender on the backside screens, he'd get better looks and maybe some backdoor layups.

I guess I will have to look at this a little closer this weekend...But sometimes the players on the backside will drift from the basket to keep their guy out of the lane, and Diebler is not necessarily a guy that is going to do cutting to the lane, but he is a guy that comes off screens for jumpshots...

I have noticed Jon doing this too, just floating on the back side and looking like a spot shooter waiting for the ball, now once he gets the ball he does do several different things. But maybe if he moved more around the court he might get open more, but maybe Matta has him do that to keep his spread. ??

Look Diebler certainly has his problems I'll give you that but I'm not about to lump a lot of our problems on Jon. I blame the team....everyone except for Butler. They are young and I know they will get better but if we are talking about the present.....the rest of the guys have not come close to stepping up. Diebler needs to shoot better yes but he needs to rebound better too. Just like Kufos needs to learn an inside game, perhaps practice a hook shot and rebound better. Hunter needs to play with energy every single night, not just bring it every other game. Lighty needs to slow down and stop turning the ball over and Turner needs to make more shots and for god's sake they all, other than Butler, need to work on FREE THROWS!

Look my point is we all want our Buckeyes to win. They are young right now and are going through problems that young teams face. The struggles that this team is facing are more about the team problems than individuals. Hopefully Matta gets after the fellas in practice, they learn a lot, and start gelling as a team. We all have to remind ourselves that the last few years we have been spoiled. This team is young and we shouldn't jump to conclusions about these kids careers when they are only freshman. Have patients with these kids because I have a feeling that they will be able to do some special things when they finally come together as a unit. We all want wins but we have to support this young team. GO BUCKS!

The fact that he has been doing it the entire season leads me to beleive that it is his role in that particular offensive set. A good way to get benched is to start freelancing as a freshman.

Diebs is a freshman. There is no complicated answer to why he is struggling. I have been to scout.com/rivals.com/Bucknuts and all they seem to post is negative stuff about Jon and his game. Lets remember we are talking about a first year player and not a fifth year senior. Take a look around at some other freshman in the country, some have found success while others have struggled. He will have a roller coaster season, Matta has no choice to play him and see if he can overcome his lack of confidence in games. There is no senior he can go to. I still maintain he will be fine.

Some posters on other boards should be ashamed of themselves....:(

Probably the same guys that were throwing Butler under the bus his freshmen year where he only shot the ball at a 23% clip from behind the arc...

Diebs will be fine, he is just playing mind games with himself when he is shooting the ball instead of just letting it fly...

He has definitely been struggling but for some reason I still felt confindent as he rose up with that game tying three that he would knock it down....and then he missed it and the follow up.

He was visibly upset as time expired. I think it was Lighty that grabbed him close to midcourt and was consoling him. It was good to see a teammate try to pick him up when he was down.

Keep your chin up Jon. That was a tough opponent in a hostile environment. You'll have more chances down the road.
