'Comfortable' Cook ready for NBA tour

Indications are he'll be drafted, making it more than likely he won't return to Ohio State.

COLUMBUS ? A grin formed on Daequan Cook's face as he perused the list of NBA teams who want to work him out.
Suns. Lakers. Spurs. Pistons. Heat. And more. Half the league's teams ? so far ? have scheduled workouts with Cook after the NBA pre-draft camp in Orlando, Fla., May 29 to June 4.
"It's amazing," the Ohio State freshman said with a chuckle. "I had a great season. I had a couple downfalls here and there, but I'm still able to go out and allow these teams to see what I'm capable of doing. It's just great to see the teams that never gave up on me.
"Once I heard the teams that were looking at me, that made me feel a lot more comfortable."
Cook had a good start to his freshman season, but his production and role decreased during the Buckeyes' run to the NCAA title game.
But Cook and his camp have received enough information to believe that staying in the NBA draft is the right move.

That's very good news.

I'm sorry, this might be a stupid question but is that good news because it means he might come back still, or good news just because it means our APR score wont take a hit?

Yeah, like he said "both". However, it doesn't look good for him coming back.

From DDN article: " As an early draft entrant who hasn't yet signed with an agent, Cook could withdraw his name from the June 28 draft by June 18. Barring injury, Albert Powell said that's not going to happen."

NbaDraft

Daequan Cook 6-5 210 SG Ohio St. Fr. -- Cook struggled for playing time at the end of the year, however many scouts feel he's a first rounder this year anyway. Some attribute that lack of playing time to the team trying to keep the player around for next season. Cook had some monster games before Oden returned to the team, and never was able to get the same touches afterwards. The latest news is that Cook is set to stay in the draft regardless if he's projected in the first or second round. He would probably benefit in the long run by returning to school, but with a solid shot to get in the first round, it's hard to fault his decision either way. Verdict: Go

What a dumb statement. Teams that play for championship don't think about next year.

it's not a dumb statement if some actually think that. considering a few of the statements from cook's circle, it's not unreasonable to think that there is this idea out there somewhere.

I think that all would agree that the thought that precipitated a statement like that is indeed fairly stupid, no matter its origin.

of course. however, if it is the case that some in cook's circle think that he was kept from the court so that he would return, it's immaterial whether the idea is stupid. sure, it's ludicrous to think that matta had an ulterior motive, but it's not "dumb" to contend that it was a reason for cook's (probable) leaving early.

whatever the reasons may be, it's all water under the bridge. i have absolutely no misguided ideas that he'll return, and i wish him the best. if his relationship with matta was strained, which it probably was, i'd like to think that both parties will use that experience as a learning tool. i do mean that, too. as long as matta recruits players who would be drafted as early as they can come out, there will be these issues. it's a good "problem" to have. although, i'm hopeful that any future concerns do not revolve around a player thinking that he was kept from the court for any other reason but than for the betterment of the current team.

Siegel's Take: NBA Draft Shooting Guard Analysis
May 22nd, 2007

4) Daequan Cook - Ohio State - If the NBA Draft were last Christmas, Cook would have been a Top 10 lock. Before Oden got there, Ohio State was a different team, an up-tempo free team that enabled guys like Cook and Ron Lewis to thrive. Once they became a slow-down, half-court team against better competition, Cook faded into the background. Still, he has all the tools to be a quality NBA player. Mainly he can do the three things NBA teams love: run, jump, and shoot. The problem is that he's not ready yet, and too much of a risk to take above the 20th pick (at best). Cook simply needs a season to prove himself in game situations. He has more upside than any of the guys below him on this list, but he's also a much bigger risk, and a couple years away from contributing. (Another thing to note: Even though he was only a freshman, Cook is already 20.. so you need to think of him as a year above Conley and Oden).

Daequan Cook

Cook didn't have nearly the year that Oden and Conley had, but most NBA scouts are familiar with his rep out of high school and love his tools. Cook is a 6-5? shooting guard with a 6-10 wingspan, a beautiful stroke and excellent athleticism.

He shot 42 percent from the 3-point line in his freshman year at Ohio State and was really stroking the basketball in Sunday's workout from NBA 3-point range. He has great form, showed a feathery touch and shoots it effortlessly from long distance.

He's also a big-time athlete, sporting a very impressive 39-inch vertical jump. That might come as some surprise to Ohio State fans who rarely got to see Cook use it. That's because Cook's strength is his middle game.

While he possesses a pretty quick first step, his ball-handling is suspect and it keeps him from attacking the basket and using his athleticism. In that way, he reminds me a little of Denver's J. R. Smith.

Schilling has been working tirelessly to improve Cook's handle. His dribbling drills showed he's getting there but not where he needs to be. Oden actually got through some of the drills with fewer mistakes.

Cook says he plans to play at the Orlando predraft camp and then has a number of individual team workouts scheduled before he decides whether to stay in the draft.

From watching his game, I think he probably could use at least one more year of school. But he has the potential to move up the draft board with a great camp or workouts.

College basketball fans really didn't get to see Cook at his best this year. If he can shoot the ball well and learn to take it to the basket, he has lottery-type talent. Given that, a team might want to grab him late in the first round.

DraftExpress workout evalutaion

Daequan and Oden, among others, worked out and Cook apparently put on a show. He was knocking down shot after shot and his stock is on the definitely rise. Reiterated the fact he would play in the Orlando pre-draft camp, where he has a chance to further his game and go up against some heavy competition.

I would love for my Magic here in Orlando to trade up into the first round nad pick him up. We need scoring, bad, especially from the SG position.

Ohio State's Cook won't sign with agent until after withdrawal date

espn
Barring an injury in the next two weeks, Ohio State freshman guard Daequan Cook will sign with agent Mike Conley Sr. and stay in the NBA draft.

Cook told ESPN.com Wednesday night at the pre-draft camp that he intended on staying in the draft and signing with Conley after the withdrawal date of June 18. The only reason he hasn't done it yet is as a safety net just in case he were to get hurt in the next few weeks.

Daequan Cook, 6-5, Freshman, Shooting Guard, Ohio State

Daequan Cook seemed apprehensive throughout the drills today, and struggled to get anything working in his favor. Offensively, he struggled to create separation away from opposing defenders who were stronger and more experienced, showing some fairly poor ball-handling skills and a distinct lack of concentration.

Daequan Cook 6-5 210 SG Ohio St. Fr. -- Cook is the one player projected in NBADraft.net's first round participating in this year's draft camp. Cook drew a lot of criticism after butting heads with Thad Matta late in the season, apparently playing for himself more than the team, looking for shots instead of getting the ball inside the Buckeye center Greg Oden.

Daequan Cook- He struggled big time, he didn?t seem to focused, his ball-handling skills were bad. He had a tough time against stronger older players. He definitely looked like the youngest player in camp.

Daequan Cook was easily the most impressive player this morning. He was matched up against his Buckeye teammate Ron Lewis in the team scrimmage. Cook exploded for 10 points in the 10 minute session. The first two possessions of the game Cook made a statement knocking down a jumpshot, and following that with a steal and breakaway dunk.

I know he had the one good showing, but if you are a first round pick and everyone else is going from 2nd round and undrafted I would think you would be shining the whole time...

I still think this is a stupid move on his part, but I will wish him luck in whatever he chooses...
