SG Daequan Cook (Ironi Hai Motors Nes-Ziona - Israel)

From the pre-camp scouting article.

FALLING
.......
2. Daequan Cook, 6-4 guard, Ohio State ? Scouts feel he has a ton of potential but needs to go back to school and work on his game. If he does that, then he can be a lottery pick next year.

Is anyone in his camp reading these scouting articles? If his stock is dropping and he could come back and soar up the draft charts next season, doesn't it make sense to come back?! There has to be more going on in Columbus than we are privvy to.

i've read too many comments from his mother, his old coach, and other "insiders" to think that it's really only about his ability that is keeping him from returning. i don't think cook and matta see eye to eye. if their relationship is actually strained, i could see it keeping cook from returning. if their relationship is not strained, the worst that cook will end up is somewhere in the second round (yes, as if-then statements go, that one sucks; so be it; i'm tired but can't fall asleep). cook probably prefers to prove himself while making a healthy check over proving himself while not.

i've read that if it were between cook returning and cook transferring, he would choose to transfer. i don't know if that's accurate. however, if this is the case, it says everything about how he feels toward matta and his (cook's) place in the program.

Thats a sad state of affairs really considering that Daequan was instrumental in getting Conley and Oden to Columbus as well. It makes you wonder just which one failed to live up to their end.

between matta and cook, it may not be an either/or situation. sometimes it just doesn't work out.

From ESPN regarding his performance in the recent NBA camp....

Daequan Cook, SG, Ohio State
6 points, 8 turnovers, 3-for-10 shooting
Cook may have more raw talent than anyone else at the camp, but he's also the youngest player here and it really showed.
He displayed poor shot selection, forced way too many plays and ended up looking very much like a kid who needs to go back to school.
I know he says he's staying in the draft, and some team may take him late in the first round based on his upside, but Day 1 was a pretty big disappointment.

He might have some issues with Thad but I think him staying in the draft is more about the financial side. I think that he is from a very poor background and that they would like to see the money now and not later. That is very very unfortunate.

That is my read as well. Cook was saying one-and-done even before he committed for those very reasons. The way Matta can recruit kids who can go anywhere you would think he could re-recruit a kid like Cook who has no real options but OSU or the NBA. Transfer talk is just nonsense - sitting accomplishes nothing. Nor does some podunk program at a lower level.

That he has not signed with an agent indicates the door is not slammed shut. To have the potential to go from a second rounder to a lottery pick is an awful lot to pass up.

Still hoping he takes one more solid look at things and makes the wise choice.

The lottery picks get up to 3 to 4 million per year; however, fortunately for Daequan the NBA minimum is not exactly "chump change". If he gets drafted and makes the team, he should average at least 3/4 million per year over his first 4 yerars.

I just hope he waits to sign until after the draft, not after his workouts. That's all I'm hoping for right now, and after that we should just expect to see Cook make the best decision for himself and his family from that position.

Being a second rounder isn't the end of the world. I'm of the opinion that Cook will excel in the pro game. I think he'll excel with pro coaching. I just think it's important that he goes to an organization that will take the time to develop him properly. I think he'll be a fifteen PPG scorer in four years, but that all hinges on him getting into the right situation.

he played well in the beginning of the season but towards the end he was just trying to line drive his shot
go back to the beginning of the thread, hes always had a flat shot. some of you guys rip the kid i give him a lot of credit. playing on a bad hammy, a bad finger and rumors of mono and playing through it i think give him so credit. no way do we make the final four without cook. his role against memphis will always be remembered by me...

Waaaayyy different situation at Dunbar than Ohio State. At Dunbar he was given free reign to take a shot when he felt like it. At Ohio Stat the offense ran through Oden when he came back from injury. At the beginning of the season when Oden was hurt our offense was more run and gun. That type of offense suits Daequan to a T. If Phoenix drafts Cook like they're looking at him now, he'll excel. Of course, who wouldn't excel with Nash dishing you the ball.

I guess that's my point. 3/4 million a year is very good money from where he is coming from or for that matter for anyone.
I appreciate everything that DQ has done for the Buckeyes and wish him all the best. It's just an unfortunate situation.
