SG Daequan Cook (Ironi Hai Motors Nes-Ziona - Israel)

scored a quiet 23 in a 95-90 barn burner of a lose. not a good long distance shooter, very flat and hard shot. 1-9or10 on threes. a good pull up jump shooter though. does not attack the basket prefers to pull lup at 5 feet. very fluid player with excellent hands. reminds me of a great defensive back when the ball is in the air, fluid slow motion movements but always gets it. very good ball handler, on full court press the press breaker was posting him up and daquean would run the ball all the way down the court and dish for a layup. plays maybe a little to unselfish. effort seemed to be lackluster, often times wouldnt even jog down to the offensive end. honestly this team was absoltely terribly coached, if those guys were coaches not bus drivers...

also had a player on his team worth a mention #44 pouge 6-8 very solid build. underutilized but an absolute load. physically larger than dials, but was not used in any half court sets (they never ran any "sets" that i saw) good hands and great quickness for a guy his size. like cook had a tendency not to run the floor, on both ends.

from the first time i saw him in person 3/05

also of note he shot .415 from 3land and .445 from the floor.

the one thing about cook is his ability to get easy baskets in a transition game. he scored so many points the first few games of the year in the "slow break" something that is very common in the nba game.

If there were doubts before I'd say they are pretty much eliminated now.

Cook dominates. Put in the right situation Cook could have an excellent career. I'd like to wish him good luck finally and say thank you for an outstanding season although up and down for him. Go get 'em DC!

Latest round of Suns draft workouts
Paul Coro
The Arizona Republic
Jun. 8, 2007 10:47 AM

Cook on his workout: "I feel like I did a great job out there. I played very aggressive and handled it with a lot of confidence. That was the big thing for me to come out with a lot of confidence."

Cook on his mindset: "I haven't lost confidence, not being able to play down the stretch. The main thing is confidence. That's what I've got to go with. A lot of people felt like I lost my confidence going down the stretch at the end of the season. There's a lot on my shoulders right now. A lot of people said I can go back to school but just to prove to myself that I can do what other people do."

Cook on whether his decision to play at pre-draft camp helped: "No question. Just like the workout here, it was a great opportunity for me to expose my game and put it up against other players and see how good I was. I felt very confident going into that also, knowing I can play with the best of them."

Cook on what he needs to show NBA personnel: "Being more aggressive on the defensive end, that's the most important thing for me right now. I can shoot the ball and do everything else but the most important thing is not letting your man score just as many points as you. That's what I'm working on now, being a defensive player also."

Cook on the Suns: "It's been my dream. This is one of the teams I've wanted to play for since playing at high school. We had a few plays like the Suns. We like to excite the crowd. We like to run and gun. That's the kind of offense I love. Not to say I don't like the half-court set but I like to run."

Griffin on Cook: "He's a special, special physical specimen."

From that same article:

Griffin on the Suns' two first-round picks: "Having multiple picks enables you to take a look at multiple types of players. I think you get a chances to be a little more selective because of how good we are. Maybe nobody gets a lot of time with us right now. In that sense, if somebody's really ready to play, it's not always a huge positive. In some ways, you might want them to be ready to play in a year or so and have more ceiling. I think we have the potential to look at both."

Sounds like Cook to me.

previos post:

If Phoenix drafts Cook like they're looking at him now, he'll excel. Of course, who wouldn't excel with Nash dishing you the ball.

I'm ready to buy my Cook jersey so I hope this comes to fruition down here in PHX.

Oates: Cook over Tucker? Only in the NBA
TOM OATES 608-252-6172
[email protected]
Daequan Cook still has the option of returning to the Ohio State men's basketball team for his sophomore season. If he doesn't, however, most mock drafts have him being taken ahead of the University of Wisconsin's Alando Tucker in the upcoming NBA draft.
Go figure.

Players' return to college would be big boost to teams

The deadline to withdraw from the June 28 NBA draft is Monday at 5 p.m. But Saturday, maybe more than Monday, will be the decision day for a number of key players who are still waffling about whether to return to school.

Daequan Cook, Fr., G, Ohio State: Cook is doing the same thing as his teammate and good friend, so expect Cook to be on the list of players staying in the draft. He said in Orlando that he was doing so. Ohio State expects both Conley and Cook to be gone.

Cook committed to turning pro
By STEVE KING

Sometimes the best form of motivation comes disguised as doubt.
Daequan Cook has been doubted all his life. They told him in his freshman year he couldn't play high school basketball at Dunbar High in Dayton, Ohio, and he went on to score 17 points in the McDonald's All-American game 4 years later.

They told him and his Ohio State teammates that they wouldn't make it through the NCAA Tournament last year, and the Buckeyes wound up reaching the championship game against Florida.

And now they are telling him he can't play in the NBA - at least not just yet.

Cook, who posted 9.8 points and 4.3 rebounds per game as the sixth man for Ohio State, said yesterday there is no turning back to college at this point. Projected as an mid- to late first round draft pick, Cook said he plans to sign next week with an agent, most likely Mike Conley Sr., who also represents two of Cook's Buckeyes teammates, Greg Oden and Mike Conley Jr.

He said the fact that Oden, possibly the No. 1 overall pick, and Conley Jr., possibley a top-five pick, decided to enter the draft after one season as well didn't sway his decision.

"When it came down to it, it was a decision I had to make," Cook said after working out for the 76ers at Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine yesterday.

"It was more of what I wanted to do, for the simple fact I felt confident declaring the draft."

Starting only one game last season, Cook scored 20 or more points six times, while shooting 42 percent from three-point range. While he can score at will, many scouts think Cook is still a raw player who has a lot of room for improvement. The 6-6 Cook, who said he likes to model his game after Ray Allen, acknowledged those evaluations and said he has been working more on his perimeter defense and ballhandling.

"You can average 100 points, but if you're not stopping your man, it doesn't mean anything, so that's what I feel like I really need to work on," Cook said.

After eight workouts, Cook said he has at least four more workouts scheduled before the draft June 28. He plans to audition for Utah, Golden State, San Antonio and Miami next week, but not before a well-deserved break back home in Dayton this weekend.

"Man, it's been hectic," Cook said. "I haven't been home in about 2 months. It's going to be good just to relax for a few days and see my mom. But I guess I better get used this lifestyle, right?"

Cook staying in NBA draft
Ohio State freshman from Dunbar High School will retain Conley Sr. as his agent.

When you drain 22-of-25 3-pointers — from NBA range — you're staying in the draft.

Ohio State freshman and Dunbar High School graduate Daequan Cook made that official Friday. Cook, who has had nine workouts in front of about half the NBA teams, had until Monday to withdraw his name from the June 28th draft.

"There's no question I'm going to stay in it," Cook said. "I'm confident coming out of all these workouts. Just hearing from the GMs, I'm in a good position."

In a Friday workout for the Philadelphia 76ers, Cook said he hit 65-of-75 shots overall and a blistering 22-of-25 from beyond the 23-foot, 9-inch arc.

"I lit it up real good today," he said. "All these places I'm going to (for workouts), they want a great shooter, and I've got to perform. ... You've got to knock down open shots."

Dunbar assistant Albert Powell said he's basically been "assured" in discussions with NBA teams that Cook will be a first-round (top 30) draft pick. That means a multi-year contract and guaranteed money.

"It's looking good for me," Cook said. "Teams around picks 24 to 27 really can't guarantee (selecting) me because they feel like I'm not going to be there when they pick. Hearing stuff like that makes me feel real good."

As of now however, sources close to the team suggest either Morris Almond of Rice or Ohio State's Daequan Cook will get the Knicks nod on June 28th. Both share much in common: 6'6 guards who can light it up from the perimeter. Cook has big game experience playing alongside Greg Oden, Mike Conley Jr, and Ron Lewis at Ohio State. Yet it is Almond who may have the advantage when all is said and done.

NBA Draft 30-to-1 Profiles: Daequan Cook

by Sean Kane
ComcastSportsNet.com Contributor

Note: Stories are posted in the order the features air on Comcast SportsNet (beginning with 30 and ending with 1). The number is not an indication of the prospect's projected draft position.

No. 12 Daequan Cook

School: Ohio State (declared following freshman season)
Height/Weight: 6-5/215
Position: Shooting guard
Born: 4/28/1987
Projects: Late first round (22-30)

Strengths: Cook is a gifted athlete with a scorer?s mentality. He surprised many by declaring for the draft after just one year at Ohio State but figures to be a first-round pick based solely on his athleticism and upside as an off guard in the league. He can reel off points in bunches and is most effective shooting from 15-18 feet. He owns a polished mid-range game, which is rare for someone who just turned 20.

Q&A with Daequan Cook

Cook learned to grow up fast at OSU, never discussed playing time

By Mark Gokavi

Wednesday, June 27, 2007

DAYTON ? Many NBA scouts and pundits have similar thoughts about Daequan Cook: "Talented, a good athlete, a great shooter, but has defensive lapses, forces some shots and faded down the stretch at Ohio State. He should have stayed in school to be a lottery pick."
Cook has heard it all, but he wanted to make the leap to Thursday night's NBA draft.

Cook's reasons for leaving OSU after one year are about more than just his family's situation.

Q If you don't go in the first round, it could cost you hundreds of thousands in guaranteed money. Why chance it?
A If that was to happen, sometimes you've got to take chances and hope for the best outcome.
