SG Daequan Cook (Ironi Hai Motors Nes-Ziona - Israel)

Very true, but she didn't need to say it to the media...not that it matters much to Matta or tOSU basketball, but it doesn't represent her very well.

The quotes attributed to parents irritate the hell out of me. If I was in any of these guys shoes the first thing I'd do is tell my parents to shut the hell up..

Her attitude about the situation, if it is indicative of the quotes in the paper, is disappointing.

Matta didn't make her son play poor defense.

Did she think we should keep playing him while he was getting blown by many times by people he was trying to guard?

If she didn't notice that Lighty played great defense and her son was horrible on that end of the floor, and later inconsistently on the offensive end as well, she must not know a whole bunch about basketball.

And if she didn't notice that Matta emphasizes defense then she didn't do her due diligence when selecting a college program.
It's interesting. Her attitude, and if DQ's is similar, ar in such stark contrast to Lighty's as revealed in that article during the tourney run where he basically told coach "Whatever you need me to do".

I really want DQ to come back, I think he can be great on both ends, but he may need to grow up a little. If that IS the case, he stands a better chance of growing up under Thad than the NBA, which will feed a poor attitude if he has one.

*Edited because I went over the line with some of my comments, as aptly pointed out by better posters here

It's way over the top to claim that DQ was "horrible" on either end of the court, at any time during the season.

DaeQuan certainly has some work to do on his game, but he is a fine talent; his performance was pretty much what you would expect to see out of a very talented frosh. Problem was we had two of the best 3 (and in Conley, the most mature) frosh in the nation to compare him to, every time he set foot on the court.

MaxBuck you're absolutely right. I went back and changed my post as I was over the line, I was more fired up than I should have been from those comments and I apologize.

He became inconstent at the offensive end, regardless of the cause, and a lot of people turned on him but he still has SO MUCH potential (part of why I want to see him come back).

His defense was questionable at times, but if he can work on that, he could easily start for us, or any NCAA or NBA team.

Again, sorry about that.

i for one have no problem with anyones views. stating it in an appropriate manner is key. even i get the occasional warning pm or comment from you guys and then i go back and edit/delete a post. they key here is that we all police each other. sometimes how you say things are not interrupted that way. willingness to refine your points in a mature manner and express yourself and views in such a manner that is responsible and worded in such a manner that would be deemed as constructive criticism.

what is sometimes said is often times... (blank) sucks at defense tells us very little.

thus, if you can say we can all get a lot more out of our experience here at bp... (blank) sometimes struggles with his consistency on the defensive end of the floor, he tends to get lost and have mental lapses along with sometimes questionable effort on that end of the floor. though,
it is obvious that he has great hands and when pressed he has shown his ability to play great defense. it can be frustrating to watch as sometimes like against msu and memphis he plays his heart out and plays the role of a defensive stopper and has a dominating presence, while other times he seems to struggle on the defensive end of the floor.

Just my opinion on the matter but if it turns out in the end that they are indeed that unhappy I hope that he does leave. We don't need individuals we need great players who want to win games with their team and teamates. I would just tell he and his family good luck and hope it works out the way you want it to.

I hope DQ doesn't share his mother's feelings. But if he does, then maybe it is best for all involved that he either go to the NBA or transfer.

I'll third the nomination that if Cook and his "camp" are that unhappy, please, by all means, leave ASAP.

not me. the one thing that i enjoyed about troy smith was he seemed to go out there and prove everyone wrong. his situation was interesting and he was portrayed more than once being sour. at the sametime that competitive fire is something that can be leveraged. i come to think of a speech i read in school one time called the common denominator of success by gray. and in an odd way it reminds of that.

"there is no inspiration in logic
there is no courage in logic
there is not even happiness in logic"

that doesnt really encompass the speech but its what sticks out to me.

if cook wants to use and leverage this as a learning experience, improve and grow from it, the oppurtunity is one in which his purpose and that success lies in a foundation of daily habits that common people dont like to do. successfull people are successful because they do the things that failures dont like to do. successful people are influenced by the desire for pleasing results were as failures are infleunced by the desire for pleasing methods and are inclined to be satisfied with such results that can be obtained by doing things they like to do.

daequan cook no matter his choice will face that. the talent is there. its if the abovementioned is present...

There is a fine line between adding something to the discussion and adding remarks that may not be appropriate in my opinion....lets be sensitive to the player and his family during this process.....let the process play out....just my two cents......its probably not worth that much. :wink2:

Wasn't Daequan quite instrumental in "recruiting" the rest of the Thad Five after he made his school choice? For that reason alone I give him (and any alleged discontentment / attitude issues) a "pass".

If he chooses to leave school for the NBA this year, yes I will have some saddness that he didn't fullfill the potential he had (as I saw it) while at OSU. But he added what he did to a Big Ten Championship and National Runner Up Team, and for that (along with his part to help woo Oden & Conley) I'll thank him.

And if he does happen to return, then I look for that ultra-athletic, supremely confident scorer that began this last season to show he can do it for an entire season and then some.

Whoa, let's not misinterpret what is being said by myself or those I quoted as being anything resembling negative or inappropriate. No one really knows the validity of the complaining being reported by the media, which is why the important word "if" was written in front of the statements. I said I agreed with the other posters "if" what was being said about this young man's situation was true. I think it's very honest helpful advice to say that "if" you are disgruntled or unhappy with anything you are doing in this world, it is excellent advice to make a change for yourself. That may include changing your attitude, changing your work habits, changing employers, etc., etc. I just wanted to clarify that I certainly meant nothing negative or inappropriate.

That is hard to believe that quote
If that quote is real then why isn't she a fan of Thad? What the hell did he do? My guess is he is like everyone else who actually cares about Cook who is telling him to stay in school a little while longer because he is not ready for the NBA. God forbid a coach actually tries to make sure a kid doesn't make a huge mistake. :roll1:

Well, he'll definitely get more playing time in 2 years after being drafted...in Europe. I'm not too sure why an NBA team would draft him high...and why they would get him play until he gets more experience overseas.
