SG Daequan Cook (Ironi Hai Motors Nes-Ziona - Israel)

Well, he'll definitely get more playing time in 2 years after being drafted...in Europe. I'm not too sure why an NBA team would draft him high...and why they would get him play until he gets more experience overseas.
Agreed 100% great post. I doubt that playing in Europe is part of Daequan's plans but that is probably what would happen. Like I said yes, he has the potential but you have to show a little more than potential to be drafted in the NBA. Unless you are like 9 ft tall and then they would draft you totally on potential.

Do you people know anything about the NBA? There is no way Cook will play in Europe in his first few years. He'll either ride the bench or play in the NBDL. He will NOT go to Europe.

You really only have to show potential to get drafted in the NBA, and Cook has shown more than that. The NBA will draft people if they can jump high and run fast. The fact that Cook can shoot a little bit is just an added bonus in NBA exec minds.

Not a knock on Cook's mom, but I have never been a fan of parents voicing thier opinion about hte coaches and playing time...

We have had football players who parents have tried to get involved a little too much, and these coaches are paid millions of dollars b/c they are winners and they know how to coach, and if they don't then they are on the hotseat and I can tell you that Matta is very far away from the hotseat...

somebody clear this up for me......does the NBA draft based on potential? I haven't picked up on that yet.

The NBA will draft on potential as long as it's 6'9"+ potential.

If Cook measures @ 6'4" (highly probable), the NBA isn't going to think much of his "potential." Traditionally, SG's, especially under-sized ones, have had to produce at the previous level to get drafted in the first round.

THANK YOU! My point exactly they will draft on potential if you are a big man. 6'4" guards are a dime a dozen, he has to show more than he has if he wants to get the dollar dollar bills ya'll.

NBA Teams will definitely draft players on potential if they're a guard.

From last year's first round alone, Rajon Rondo, Oleksiy Pecherov, Sergio Roderiguez, and Shawne Williams were all guards that were just as unproven as Cook. Teams, especially teams like the Mavs and the Spurs later in the draft, will definitely draft guards based on potential. Teams are always on the lookout for the next Arenas or Redd, the natural scorers that get have the potential but are overlooked for one reason or another. You can add Thabo Sefolosha to that list too.

You may be right but let's not compare cook to Redd. Cook could not carry Redd's jock strap let alone deserves to be in considered a definite possibility to land in the NBA.

Last years draft was one of the weakest in NBA history. This year is one of the stronger drafts so teams won't have to draft on potential as much in the first round.

I've said it before and I'll say it again -- when you imply DQC is a "dime-a-dozen" player, you are branding yourself an idiot. He may have struggled at times this season, but he is an NBA all-star level talent.

I don't claim he is a lock for Round 1, but I think it's likely, regardless of his height.

C'mon NB, those are awful comparisons and you know it. The two college players don't compare, as Shawne Williams is 6'9" and Rondo plays the point. The other guys are foreigners who were highly successful vs. world class competition. It's no mistake that the USA's 12 best players have been playing second fiddle to the rest of the world in international competition for quite some time now.

Not only that, but drafting internationally is not a fad or a trend. Don't be surprised that by the next decade half the first round comes from overseas.

I'd compare Cook's career so far favorably to that of Rondo and the foreigners. Sefolosha wasn't exactly playing against the Brewer's and Ellington's of the world in Europe. Same goes for Roderiguez.

The players don't even need to be comparable, because the point is that NBA teams will draft guards on potential.

I still think he should come back though because in this draft I think he's at best a pick around 25. Next year I think he could go late lottery.

That's why I think Cook's best chance of going in the first is to get a loaded team to draft him, because they can afford to let Cook develop in the NBDL.
