SG Daequan Cook (Ironi Hai Motors Nes-Ziona - Israel)

NBA Teams will definitely draft players on potential if they're a guard.

From last year's first round alone, Rajon Rondo, Oleksiy Pecherov, Sergio Roderiguez, and Shawne Williams were all guards that were just as unproven as Cook. Teams, especially teams like the Mavs and the Spurs later in the draft, will definitely draft guards based on potential. Teams are always on the lookout for the next Arenas or Redd, the natural scorers that get have the potential but are overlooked for one reason or another. You can add Thabo Sefolosha to that list too.

Actually, what others have said put this comment to shame.

Rondo played 2 years at Kentucky. Cook has played for one.

Pecherov is playing PROFESSIONAL ball in Europe. Cook obviously has not.

Same goes for Rodriguez. He played pro ball in Spain before coming over here.

Shawne Williams is 6'9, which supports the earlier argument about teams drafting on potential if they are over 6'9.....

You're 100% correct with your assessment. To compare any foreign player to any American collegian, let alone Cook, is flawed. It just shows the ignorance about what is really going on globally in terms of professional basketball. As I stated earlier, it's no accident that USA basketball is not king of the hill anymore, and don't be surprised that within the next decade that close to half the first round selections in the NBA draft will come from abroad.

He wasn't really even a key player on his college team, so why would an NBA team want him (right now)?
i think that cook's apparent desire to leave has as much, if not more, to do with how he feels that he fits into matta's system. if it were just about his current prospective value to the league, i am confident that he would be sticking around for at least another year.

Yet another reason players should be in college longer to better develop as human beings, just in case.

Overall, I think Cook will get drafted and not play much the first two years. The rest after that will be up to him as far as how much he wants to work at it. Make no mistake about it though Cook is an excellent basketball talent. I honestly believe that he underestimated the depth of skill and dedication needed to play DivI college basketball. I can see alot of young kids trying to compare AAU ball with college when they come in but its not even close. The level of responsibility in any collegiate sport creates more of a "job" atmosphere within the sport vs. just waking up and going to play. Its still supposed to be fun but things are way, way more regimented in college, maybe even moreso than the NBA.

Rondo was just as raw as Cook is though. He was drafted because he's athletic and he shows sparks. One extra year in college does not mean all that much to NBA GMs.

Pecherov plays in a French basketball league. If he was playing in Israel or Eastern Europe, then maybe, but France? Their professional leagues are no better than college ball here.

Shawne Williams was just meant to show that the NBA only cares about potential. Is Cook as athletically gifted as Williams? No, but there are definitely NBA GMs that see potential in Cook, which is all that matter.

I'm not saying that Cook is ready for the NBA, or that he'll be a high draft pick, just that some time will pick him based off his potential. It'll probably be at the very tail end of the first round, or even in the second.

I would have loved to have seen Daequan develop into the player that I know he can be here at OSU, but he probably would have gone straight to the NBA if they hadn't changed the rule, so I feel lucky to have had him on our team for the year we did. I think he will end up being an excellent player at the next level.

Rando was the best on=ball defender entering the draft last year as well.....that's really all anyone was talking about when bringing up his draft status and where he'd fit in at the next level...noone was talking about his offensive game

The best comparison for Daequan that I can think of is Von Wafer from FSU 2 years ago.....McDonalds High School All-American, great shooter, who could take it the rim when he wanted to, 6'6, but couldn't defend a lick....Wafer also left after his Freshman year and was taken in the second round by the Lakers

Von is now in the NBDL

Well, Cook is consistently ranked in the 20's against the other prospects coming out in the draft, so as long as he shows well in some workouts, the odds seem to be in his favor of being a first-round pick (which is guaranteed cash). I was surprised to see so many lists putting him in that range, but it does seem to be the consensus.

Whether Daequan is ready for the NBA or not is now irrelevant to me. I hope to look back and remember him for what he did for Ohio State basketball. Mike Conley has said that if it wasn't for Cook, then Ohio State would not have even been on He and Greg's radar. If it wasn't for this year's class, then maybe next year's, or the next, or the next wouldn't be as impressive. I hope that 20 years down the road I can look back at Cook as the Johnny Dawkins of Ohio State basketball. The catalyst. The first big recruit of the Thad Matta era, the helps tOSU go on a Duke-like run through college basketball.

i really hope that he is drafted in the first round, but i'm not seeing it. in fact, i'll be a little surprised if he is drafted in the first half of the second round. with good workouts, it is surely possible, though.
