SG Daequan Cook (Ironi Hai Motors Nes-Ziona - Israel)

I will say this for the last time, the NBA does the care about the defensive ability of a college player. As long as he can ball, and Cook can, he will be fined if he gets drafted. As was stated above his game is more suited to the wide-open offenses of the NBA.

I know the NBA might not care(I think that's what you were trying to say) about the defensive ability of a player at the college player, but if a player doesn't or can't play defense, and he isn't an amazing offensive player(like a Nash or Vince Carter), then he'll ride the bench.

Cook will NEVER get consistent minutes in the NBA unless he plays at least average defense, which he hasn't shown he can do. Now, he has the potential and athletic ability to do so, but we don't know if he will.

Offensive potential isn't the only thing scouts look at. You need to play good team defense in the NBA to win games, and most NBA teams use man-to-man.

I think it just depends on the coach. Look at JR Smith who has amazing talent but doesn't play a lick of defense. For Byron Scott he sat the bench because he couldn't play any defense but now for George Karl he was getting major time before AI came. Lets be honest defense is purely effort and desire so if he has the desire to lock people down he'll do it. But there are alot of players who don't have the desire to play D in the league. If Cook comes back i think he's going to have a huge year. Because i think we will be doing alot more running like we did before Greg got healthy.

this quote is from the article that obj posted in the spring game thread.

"I'm going to be aggressive," Cook said of his workout plan for NBA people. "This is the most important part of the season for me, to go out there and play hard to show the coaches and scouts that I'm a great player. ... Anything can happen, (but) I mean as long as I go and work out and do the things I have to, I probably won't be back next year."

Wishing Cook good luck ? and wishing he'd come back to OSU

Making the leap: Ohio State freshman Daequan Cook, who apparently has the most pro potential of any sixth man in college basketball, has declared for the NBA draft. "I want to continue to challenge myself further," the Dunbar High School graduate said in a news release. (Who writes those things?)

Cook seems like a great kid, and I wish him the best. But if he really wants a challenge, why not go back to OSU and crack the starting lineup?
It's a shame that McDonald's All-Americans are almost labeled failures if they're not playing for pay by their 20th birthdays. Really, unless you totally despise term papers, there's nothing wrong with sucking it up and playing two entire seasons of college ball.

Good luck to him, he will need it and that statement is by no means meant to be derogatory.

You cannot expect his mother to be objective. She saw him getting reduced playing time especially not the amount of minutes she wants and believe it or not she would really like him to take the money even though it may only be the NBA minimum. That would still be a humongous amout of money to ANYONE.

Not getting playing time at OSU or the NBA...what's the differnce? $$$$$$

The only thing that this decision may affect is his longevity in the NBA. Well grounded logic is obviously not being used by his mother's comments.

Clouded judgement is so easy when it involves your son and $$$$...a deadly combo.

While Cook takes leap, Dunn swings and misses

A couple of observations, now that spring has finally sprung and the grass has risen ? has it ever.
? Daequan Cook always was a star basketball player when he was hitting numerous 3-pointers and tossing down spectacular dunks at Dunbar High School.
He had a hot start as a freshman at Big Ten champ Ohio State, enough to be named that league's top sixth man.
His second half, however, didn't match the first. That's not news. Everybody knows it.
A question: Did Cook become disenchanted with coach Thad Matta, or was it the other way around? And, if so, did that have a bearing on Cook's decision to declare for the NBA draft?
Next year probably would have been a great season for Cook at OSU. He might have been as dominant as in his junior and senior years at Dunbar.
Perhaps, though, it is better to sit on an NBA bench than be a star in the Big Ten. It's called the power of money.
But what if he's not drafted? Italy or Spain ... that would be a shame.

Here's hoping Daequan passes NBA test

I'm already sick of the NFL draft. The other day I listened to two radio guys break down the differences between the best cornerbacks available. I'd rather go shopping with the wife this coming Saturday than sit through the first round (and six hours of Chris Berman). The NFL draft needs a shot clock.

Daequan Cook, 6-5, Guard, Ohio State: No one question's Cook's NBA potential. The problem is that's the only thing anyone has to go on after Cook's uneven freshman season for the Buckeyes. Another year as the Buckeye's go-to-player, or at least a full-time starter, makes Cook a much more attractive prospect in 2008. That said, it'll be surprising if Cook is not drafted (provided he stays in the draft).

Ten for Tuesday: A knucklehead coming-out party

1. Daequan Cook, Ohio State: Addition by subtraction, meet Daequan Cook. This guy -- what a piece of, um, work. Cook isn't ready for the NBA, but he's tired of being kept down by OSU coach Thad Matta, who had the audacity to take away Cook's minutes as Cook slumped as a shooter -- the only thing Cook does well. Cook sulked, his mother complained, and now Cook is showing the world how talented he is by joining freshman teammates Greg Oden and Mike Conley Jr. in the draft. Difference is, Oden and Conley will be drafted in the first round. Cook? Get your passport, baby. Because if I'm Thad Matta, I'm doing to Cook what former North Carolina State coach Herb Sendek once did to draft-testing program cancer Damien Wilkins and Wilkins' malignant father: saying goodbye.

I think he is a little harsh on Cook...

Cook will get drafted late first or early 2nd...Will not play right away, will take some time to develop his game more which he could of done with another year of college...

i just hope that there is someone around him that is prepared for him not making big money of NBA players, when all the lurches come calling him for money, and hopefully Cook can deal with not seeing the court much as a rookie...Hopefully his mom doesnt try to bash his nba coach...

Unless Cook really shows himself at pre-draft camps, I do not think he will go as a late 1st or early 2nd round pick but you have proven me wrong before so we shall see:wink2: . I am not sure if you will be drafted at all.
