Buford hits 29 as Libbey finally rolls over Rogers

With another City League championship all but wrapped up, Libbey stepped on the court with Rogers last night with one goal in mind.

"Our goal is always to play better than we did the last game," Libbey coach Leroy Bates said.

The Cowboys didn't quite do that and came up shy of completely pleasing their coach with a performance that was marred by numerous turnovers by both teams.

But Libbey played well enough in spurts to claim a 60-49 victory over the Rams at Savage Hall.

William Buford, the 6-foot-5 Ohio State-bound senior, did his part to help the fourth-ranked Cowboys (16-2, 10-1) put away another City League foe. The do-it-all guard carried the Cowboys with 29 points.
Buford delivered the game's most significant points of the night when he glided to the basket for a one-handed slam over the outstretched hands of Rogers' 6-7 center Delante Heard, who was charged with a foul on the play that evoked thunderous cheers from the crowd.

Buford sank the foul shot to convert the three-point play and give the Cowboys a 55-42 lead with 2:39 left in the game.

"William Buford made some big shots for us in key points of the game," Bates said. "That [dunk] was a big play for us because it energized the rest of the guys."

Libbey leaves no doubt in semifinal

Libbey boys basketball coach Leroy Bates said his team's 78-37 win over Whitmer last night wasn't a statement. William Buford also said the Cowboys' victory in the first City League semifinal contest at Savage Hall wasn't a statement. But Libbey's dominating effort over the Panthers sure seemed like a statement. The Cowboys blew out to early leads of 8-0, 15-2 and 22-5, led 32-14 at halftime, and never really were challenged. Libbey, now 17-2, will face St. John's Jesuit in the City League championship game here at 7:30 p.m. tomorrow. Whitmer fell to 14-5. "This isn't a statement," Buford said. "We don't have anything to prove. We just want to win a City championship and a state championship. That's all we're going for."

Buford got a call from IU's Sampson
NCAA reports 'major' violations

By STEVE JUNGA
BLADE SPORTS WRITER

Kelvin Sampson's future at Indiana was in doubt yesterday following the release of an NCAA report that says he committed five "major" violations, one of which is linked to a recruiting call made to Libbey High School basketball standout William Buford, a 6-foot-5 guard who has signed a letter of intent to play at Ohio State University. According to the report released yesterday, the IU basketball coach and his assistants provided false and misleading information to university and NCAA officials. The allegations stem from a phone-call scandal that occurred while Sampson was still under recruiting restrictions following a similar episode at Oklahoma. The NCAA ruled in May of 2006, less than two months after Sampson took the Indiana job, that the Sooners coaches made 577 illegal calls between 2000 and 2004.

Cowboys rule: Veteran Libbey team rips St. John's

In the final Toledo appearance of Ohio State-bound standout William Buford and the rest of Libbey's veteran-filled roster, the Cowboys bade farewell to Savage Hall last night with an easy 61-39 victory over St. John's Jesuit before a crowd of 3,200 in the City League championship game.

Libbey's consecutive CL titles are the first for the school since 1969 and '70, and this repeat mission was never really in doubt, even with the foul trouble that limited Buford to less than 20 minutes.

It was a hurdle the Cowboys' supporting cast cleared with room to spare.

Buford topped Libbey with 15 points, more than eight below his average, and seven rebounds.

Congrats to William. We saw him play this past season at Toledo Central Catholic HS (Dane's alma mater). He is a special player, got into foul trouble in that game and sat out most of the 3rd period. Then he came back in and closed the gap to one point. He's a great shooter and a good ball handler. I can't wait to see him play with the Buckeyes.

The Cowboys? 6-foot-5 guard, who has signed to play at Ohio State University, will be a member of the East squad in the 32nd annual event, which is set for the Bradley Center in Milwaukee. The McDonald?s boys game will air live on ESPN at 9:30 p.m. on March 26.
