Libbey heats up to beat St. Edward
Cowboys' Buford gets 26 points, 11 rebounds after a shaky start

COLUMBUS - If Libbey suffered from any stage fright, it didn't show yesterday at Ohio State's Value City Arena.

The Cowboys overcame an early eight-point deficit to take a 72-58 basketball victory over Lakewood St. Edward in a game televised on ESPNU.

Libbey (10-1) - the defending City League champion and ranked No. 4 in the Division II state poll - first had to withstand an early barrage of 3-pointers by the Eagles (9-3) in a game which was part of five-game National City Classic.

The Cowboys won their first-place CL showdown 52-40 over St. John's Jesuit Friday at Savage Hall by taking control after halftime. This time they got a handle on things just before the break, then maintained control throughout the second half.

Ohio State-bound guard William Buford led Libbey with 26 points and 11 rebounds, but didn't hit his first basket until 3:27 remained in the first quarter and his team down 11-4.

"I was a little nervous coming into the game because I've got to play here next year and I didn't know what to expect out of the crowd," Buford said. "So, I was a little shaky at the beginning.

"We just had to keep playing our defense and they started missing shots. We knew, if we stayed aggressive on defense, the offense would come, so that's what we did."

Buford's game is ready for the college game as of now...

He has great moves off the dribble and has a silky smooth jump shot...

There isnt much that I can add at this point that hasnt already been said, and this performance was probably against the most talented team that he has played all season...

He also finds his teammates, and is a good rebounder...

Yup, I loved his unselfish play (should have had 4-5 add'l assists if they had knocked down wide open shots), as well as his attitude, very workman-like. He never seemed impressed with his play like many in today's game. He showed more emotion when making a simple mistake than throwing down a huge dunk.
