Central shocks Libbey
Villolovos scores 22

By STEVE JUNGA
BLADE SPORTS WRITER

By season's end, Libbey may prove to be the best Division II boys basketball team in Ohio. But last night at Central Catholic's Sullivan Center, the highly touted Cowboys were not the best D-II team in the City League in suffering a 65-63 upset to the Fighting Irish.

The Cowboys then pulled even 55-55 on a driving bucket by Buford (15 points) with 5:31 remaining before Central went up 59-55 on four free throws from Donte Johnson. The Cowboys' last tie was at 61 on a Buford steal and dunk with 2:20 to play.

Libbey never led after Ohio State-bound All-Ohioan William Buford scored eight seconds into the game for a 2-0 edge, but the Cowboys (3-1, 2-1) found enough grit to erase the 14-point deficit with a press that forced 11 second-half Irish turnovers.

The story in the Blade doesn't do that game justice. It was one of the best basketball games I've seen in a while. I expected Buford and the Cowboys to blow Central out. Instead, the Cowboys were dominated through first half and never led in the game after Buford's two after the tip. Later, Buford missed a slam in the second half that under normal circumstances would have been a easy one. I felt bad for the kid, he seemed embarassed. Then the Cowboys rallied late in the second half and tied the game. They pressed the Irish and forced 11 turnovers, but the Cowboys weren't counting on the Tory and Cory Show. 22 for Tory Villolovos (5 threes) and 13 for Cory Lehman (key steal) as the Irish outplayed one of the best teams in the State. Also Donte Johnson was in Buford's face throughout the game and did a great job defending. William got into foul trouble early and sat out part on the first period. I have to say, this Central team was tenacious and played a great game. My wife wanted to leave early after our daughter danced at half time. I think she was glad she stayed for the rest of the game. She was jumping up and down in what proved to be a very wild game from the stands.

William Buford is a special player and he will be a great asset to the Buckeyes, but last night the ball bounced in favor of a team that is known for hard fought games and upsets.

Wm Buford scores 31

Although the scoreboard may dictate otherwise, sometimes a win doesn't truly feel like a win and a loss doesn't quite seem like a loss.

That was the case in the second game of a holiday City League girls-boys basketball doubleheader last night at Savage Hall, where the Libbey Cowboys held on for a 65-57 victory over St. Francis de Sales.

The Cowboys (4-1, 3-1), unanimous favorites to repeat their CL boys championship, appeared to have a bit of a hangover from their upset loss (65-63) Dec. 14 at Central Catholic.

OSU recruit leads Toledo Libbey past Meadowdale 75-68

TROTWOOD ? After one quarter of Friday's opening game at the Lamar Davis Memorial Tournament, Toledo Libbey High School's William Buford noticed something about the Meadowdale boys' basketball team. And the Ohio State-bound guard didn't like it.
"They wanted it more than we did," said Buford. "They came out with more intensity."
So Buford and his teammates stepped it up and consequently stepped out of Trotwood a 75-68 winner.
The 6-foot-5 Buford scored a game-high 30 points.
"He's the truth," Meadowdale coach Felix Turner said. "He really hurt us. We didn't do a good job of keeping him out of the lane. There were times we played him well, but he's just relentless."
Meadowdale (6-2) looked as if it were up to stopping Buford. The Lions, ranked No. 5 in the latest Dayton Daily News Division II coach's poll, bolted to a 24-14 advantage after one quarter. Super-sub Jontay Farmer tallied 10 first-quarter points off the bench.
"He's our secret weapon," said Turner. "What he did for us is what he does every day."
Libbey took its first lead on a Buford trey as time expired in the half and went on a 12-2 run after the break.
Meadowdale closed within one point early in the forth quarter, but Libbey answered with a 10-4 run.
Jeremy Williams led Meadowdale with 15 points, and Jontay Farmer added 12.

BOYS BASKETBALL
Libbey triumphs: Buford's 27 help defeat St. John's

St. John's Jesuit's Ed Heintschel summed it up as "A tale of two halves." Libbey's Leroy Bates said it was just a matter of his Cowboys making the extra pass.

Both head coaches were on the money in assessing how Libbey turned a sub-par first-half performance into a dominant second-half effort in taking a key 52-40 City League basketball victory before a crowd estimated at 3,800 last night at Savage Hall.

And then, of course, there was Cowboy star William Buford, who accentuated his 27-point scoring output with eight assists, most after the break.

With his team trailing 27-22 at halftime, the Ohio State-bound 6-5 guard led a momentum-swinging 14-3 surge to start the third quarter.
