SF William Buford - 4 BTT Title Games, most Buckeye starts (Virtus Roma - Italy)

2007 RBK Summer Championships: Top Prospects

4. William Buford 6'5 SG Toledo, Ohio (D-1 Greyhounds)

Recently signed with the Buckeyes, this northwest Ohio baller is the real deal. A long, wiry, athletic scoring wing guard who has all the moves that creates space for his sweet stroke and can take it to the rim and finish with either hand in traffic. Played for O.J. Mayo's old crew, The D-1 Greyhounds. But I don't remember them spreading the floor for Mayo and allowing him to go one on one as a strategy. The Greyhounds went to that strategy early and often giving Buford the ball and letting him breakdown the defender to find open teammates or take it strong to the cup.

Continued (other players)...

Oh mommy! I cant wait to see the trio of Crater, Mullens and Buford in Scarlet and Gray. Undoubtedly there will be no containing the comparisons to Cook, Conley and Oden. Hopefully they will be as successful.

What I did on my summer vacation: William Buford
Libbey, senior

BLADE STAFF

WHAT HE DID: The 6-foot-6 Buford ? All-Ohio first team as a junior, when he averaged 28 points and 12 rebounds per game for the 21-2 Cowboys ? had an extremely busy summer. He traveled to tournaments with his Cincinnati-based AAU summer basketball team, the D-1 Greyhounds, to various regional and national tournaments, including Little Rock, Pittsburgh, Newark, N.J., Morgantown, W.Va., and Fort Wayne, Ind. The biggest events were the King James Classic in Akron, the AAU Nationals in Orlando, and the ?Big Time? tournament in Las Vegas in late July. There was also a trip overseas with Team Reebok, a national all-star team, which spent nine days at a Euro Camp event in Italy. Tournaments and camps out of town took up approximately 70 percent of Buford?s summer, and he spent much of the rest of his ?free time? working out with some of his Libbey teammates, shooting around and getting in an occasional weight lifting session. For fun, he got into pickup games at Hamilton Park near his home.

Libbey's Buford sends valuable signature to Ohio State

Libbey basketball standout William Buford, left, signs with Ohio State as teammate Julius Wells signs with Marist.
( THE BLADE/DAVE ZAPOTOSKY )

Yesterday was signing day for national letters of intent as high school athletes - although not football players - made official where they will be continuing their careers. Libbey's William Buford, considered one of the nation's best basketball players, will indeed be playing for Ohio State in the future. And many others from the area will be continuing, such as Buford's Cowboy teammate, Julius Wells, who is headed for Marist.

This kid's ceiling is out of sight. It's going to be a lot of fun to watch him, and hopefully we'll get to do so for more than one year.

Does anyone know if the latest reported height of 6'6" is correct?
If Cook left us after one year, I do not see Buford staying around for two after everything that I have read about him.

What's an inch with his potential:)

Libbey favored to win City League title again
Cowboys solid, smart

When Libbey boys basketball coach Leroy Bates was asked before one recent practice for some statistics on his players from last year, he wasn't sure where to quickly locate them.

Fresher on his mind were some other numbers - the improved first-quarter grade-point averages of most of the senior core of his Cowboys.

William Buford - who by the way averaged 28.5 points and 12.3 rebounds while earning Division I All-Ohio first-team honors last season - scored a 3.3 in the classroom.

Having dropped for the first time from Division I to Division II because of decreased enrollment, Libbey has to be considered a solid state-title contender.

Buford has his priorities set.

"We're just trying to focus on our schoolwork and go hard in the gym every time we're in there," Buford said. "I want us to go undefeated, win the City championship and then go win the state championship. We're going to give it our all every time we step out on the court.

"We need to play together as a team and not let anybody get big-headed."

Tonight on the way home ,listening to 1470 radio, they were interviewing Steve Mix, a player for Toledo back in the 60,s (I think) and a pro for a few years . Anyway a local boy who succeeded in sports. The Gist of the conversation was that Buford is probably as good as JJ if not better. Mix said that Buford plays at a different level than any one else in all of NW Ohio. He is definitely the best player in this neck of the woods. :tongue2:

I saw JJ a little bit when he was in high school and the games that I saw him play he was more of a power (for lack of a better word) player in those days. I think Buford has more finesse to his game. JJ was just much stronger than a lot of the guys that he played against. That is nothing against JJ but he could physically dominate an entire opposing team. I wonder how they compare Buford against Komives up around Toledo. Komives was in the late 50s but had a jump shot that was unbelievable.

City League: Buford paces Libbey

When Libbey scores 27 points in the first quarter, the Cowboys are usually on their way to an easy victory.

But Start stayed with Libbey for a while, trailing 27-21 after one quarter. The Cowboys eventually pulled away 101-76.

William Buford paced the visiting Cowboys (2-0) with 28 points and Tony Brown and Brad Sandridge added 17 apiece.

Anthony Henderson paced Start (1-1) with 25 points, Devin Russell added 16 and Dwain Golladay 15.
