Sweet revenge puts Libbey in regional
Cowboys top Irish with big fourth quarter

By STEVE JUNGA

There was still a flicker of hope midway through the third quarter yesterday for a Central Catholic basketball team trying to catch lightning in a bottle for the second time this season. But that's as far as fourth-ranked Libbey would let it go. The Cowboys (21-2) took command over the final 12 minutes, turning a modest six-point lead into a 67-38 victory in a Division II boys district final played before a standing-room-only crowd of more than 3,000 fans at Perrysburg. Libbey avenged its 65-63 City League loss at Central on Dec. 14, and sent the Cowboys into a regional semifinal with eighth-ranked Columbus Eastmoor Academy at 8:15 p.m. Thursday at Anderson Arena in Bowling Green. William Buford topped Libbey with 19 points and 11 rebounds, and Julius Wells added 14 points and 10 boards.

Libbey faces foe from capital; Cowboys' next hurdle: Eastmoor

By STEVE JUNGA
BLADE SPORTS WRITER

As the Libbey Cowboys look toward their goal of a Division II state basketball championship, the next barrier in getting to Columbus comes from the capital city itself.

?Libbey star William Buford has signed to play his college basketball at Ohio State University, the same place where Eastmoor graduate Archie Griffin played football and won two Heisman Trophies. The Warriors' version of Buford is 6-3 senior guard-forward Antonio Bumpus, who averaged 21.7 points per game this season while leading Eastmoor in scoring in all but two games. Bumpus was a first-team selection in the CCL and on the Central Ohio all-district team.

Libbey closes door on Eastmoor
Future Buckeye Buford scores 26 against Warriors

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

BOWLING GREEN, Ohio -- Guts and heart took Eastmoor Academy to a Division II boys regional semifinal, then deep into the fourth quarter last night in Anderson Arena.
But leading by just three points with 2:37 left, Toledo Libbey and its star, Ohio State recruit William Buford, pulled away for a 59-50 victory.
Buford scored 12 of his 26 points in the fourth quarter, and it was too much for the youthful Warriors (20-3), who were playing in their first regional since 2000.

Cowboys ride Buford, scores 26 despite foul trouble

BOWLING GREEN - It was not their prettiest or most dominant performance of the basketball season but, at this point in tournament play, survival is the key.

The fourth-ranked Libbey Cowboys did just that last night in taking a 59-50 victory over eighth-ranked Columbus Eastmoor Academy in a Division II regional semifinal played before a crowd estimated at 3,500 at Anderson Arena.

Libbey has an All-American player in 6-5 senior William Buford and, in the final five minutes, needed the skills that earned the Ohio State-bound guard that lofty status.

Buford did not disappoint with Buckeyes coach Thad Matta looking on from the stands. He scored 12 of his game-high 26 points in the final 6:24, including seven after picking up his fourth foul with 5:14 remaining and Libbey ahead just 44-38.

Interesting that with all the games going on around the State that Matta was in attendance at Buford's. Plus, Buford played at the furthest site from Columbus. Curious:huh:
JMO but I would think that Buford would be pleased that Matta would go see him play this late in the "game". I know I would be impressed that Matta cared that much.

I guess my thinking on Matta being at Buford's game is that since he has already signed his letter that Thad might show up at other tournament games were some good sophomores or juniors in Ohio might be playing. I guess maybe he is not interested in any other players in the state for 2009 that are still playing.

You need to hold Thad in a higher position of respect than that.

Lex says it wants Buford, Libbey
By Curt Conrad
Telegraph-Forum staff

BOWLING GREEN -- As they streamed out of Bowling Green State University's Anderson Arena after Lexington's 65-62 win over Vermilion in the regional semifinals Thursday, the Minutemen student section broke into one final impromptu cheer. "We want Bu-ford!"
The Lex faithful will get their wish. Ohio-State bound William Buford, Toledo Libbey's silky-smooth 6-foot-5 shooting guard, thrilled the near capacity crowd -- which included OSU coach Thad Matta -- with 12 of his game-high 26 points in the final 6 1/2 minutes of the Cowboys 59-50 win over Columbus Eastmoor Academy in Thursday's late game. Included in his fourth-quarter barrage was a spectacular two-handed reverse dunk with 1:35 remaining.
What's more, the Mr. Basketball candidate did most of his damage in the period after picking up his fourth foul with 5:14 remaining. "I just kept on playing like I didn't have any fouls, because, if you lose, you go home," Buford said. "My teammates were able to get me the ball when I needed it and I was able to score."
