http://www.dispatch.com/content/stories/sports/2011/10/28/rumblings-10-28-art-gqbem1nj-1.htmlThad Matta?s early assessment of freshman swingman Sam Thompson is an eye-popper. Speaking at Big Ten media day yesterday outside of Chicago, Matta called Thompson ? probably the best athlete that I?ve coached.?
Because Thompson is 6 feet 7, from Chicago and handles the ball well enough that he has played point guard, his game already has drawn comparisons with former Ohio State star Evan Turner, a comparison Matta tried to downplay earlier. But it is clear that Matta likes what he sees of Thompson.
?I?ve been once again very, very pleased with his ability to shoot the ball,? Matta said. ?He?s a tremendous kid and doing all the things he needs to do to contribute for this basketball team."
Thompson was ranked No. 40 nationally in a consensus of six recruiting rankings of this freshman class.

Sam Thompson just might be the freshman of the 2011 class that is sneaking under the radar. The 6'7" wing out of Chicago Illinois has shown throughout his career a versatility, intensity, and athletic ability that is bar none one of the top in the 2011 class.
