After 'oversight,' Young players will be added to McDonald's All-American list
By Colleen Kane, Tribune reporter

Five Young basketball players who were not among the 72 McDonald's All-American nominees from Illinois that were announced Thursday will be added to the list on Monday.

McDonald's All-American games founder and executive director Robert Geoghan called the absence of the five Division I-bound players from the list "an oversight."

Sam Thompson (Ohio State), Luke Hager (North Carolina-Wilmington), Kiana Johnson (Michigan State), Chanise Jenkins (DePaul) and Bryeasha Blair (Central Florida) were nominated by state basketball experts, but because the McDonald's selection committee had not verified their information with Young officials, their names were not among the country's nearly 2,000 nominees that were released Thursday. Representatives of the committee call every nominee's high school to confirm the players' names, contact information and standing in school and on the team.

Thompson's name came up during last nights Milton vs Oak Hill game. Biancardi talked about his versatility. I saw him in a game earlier in the year, and love his game. He seemed to work at all aspects of the game, including rebounding and defense, things that will help him see the court early next year.

It's a great time to be a Buckeye fan.

Sam Thompson scored 16 points and was terrific on both ends of the floor and Tommy Hamilton had eight of his 12 points in the first half to help Young (11-6, 5-2) snap a three-game losing streak that included conference losses to the Commandos and the Admirals.

"We've been going through some rough times, so this was a big game for us," said the Ohio State-bound Thompson, a 6-foot-7 forward who also had five rebounds, three assists and two blocks.

"It was important for us to get back to playing Young basketball, and that starts with defense."

recently every kid that can dunk cant get many minutes for thad for different reasons (weatherspoon, eric wallace) and end up on the bench or out of columbus...i dont think this will be the case with thompson...cant wait to see him dunk on everyone in the big 10

I agree. Thompson has alot more overall skill then both of them at this point. Thompson is alot more of basketball player than athlete, which is a different story when you compare him to Spoon and Wallace...

Thompson played alright in the game tonight. This may sound weird but he looked out of place because he was trying to play a more structured game while others were playing selfish.

He will be a good set player for us over the next 4 years. Consider me excited with his team-first approach.

Defensive first and totally unselfish non-point guards usually look out of place in these games. You need the ball in your hands, or need to be a Guy who shoots it as soon as he touches it, or be a dominate big to really stand out.

I really like all I've heard and seen of Thompson, he will look great in S&G. His game is the kind that help win championships:oh:

Top newcomers in Big Ten basketball
By Jason King

Sam Thompson, Ohio State, F ? A 6-foot-7 small forward, Thompson is capable of playing all three perimeter positions. He has excellent ballhandling and passing skills, which enables him to make plays both for himself and for others. At 185 pounds, Thompson needs to add strength and bulk. His 3-point shooting could also use some work.

Sam Thompson

A 6-foot-6 small forward from Chicago, Thompson is a versatile scorer with a knack for making plays. If he transitions smoothly to the college game, Thompson could play some valuable minutes for OSU.

"He definitely has the ability to create," Noon said, "and that's something Matta definitely will be looking for."

Because of his length and athleticism, Thompson is able to defend multiple positions on the floor, much like Lighty.

"Now that the program has lost Lighty and Diebler, (Thompson) has got a chance to come in, and if he can show them something right away, he has a chance to play quite a bit," Helwagen said. "He's maybe the next David Lighty."
