Ohio State men's basketball: Selfless Thompson impresses
Athletic freshman is committed fully to team-first approach

The Columbus DispatchSunday January 29, 2012
As a sophomore at Whitney Young High School in Chicago, Sam Thompson was promoted suddenly to the starting lineup after two starters were injured during the run to the state tournament. All he did the rest of the way, his coach said, was defend the other teams? best player as their school won the championship.
Last year, as a senior, Thompson was positioned to be the Dolphins? go-to player ? until the team unexpectedly needed a point guard. ?Sam could have scored 20, 25 points a game,? coach Tyrone Slaughter said, ?but we asked him to play out of position and he accepted that challenge because it was what the team needed.?
In a recent game, Thompson, an Ohio State freshman, was running past the Buckeyes? bench when he told coach Thad Matta to take him out and put a teammate in. It wasn?t from fatigue.
?It was so (the teammate) could get in,? Matta said. ?How many guys are going to do that??
If you?re looking for reasons Thompson has emerged this month as the new kid on the block for the fourth-ranked Buckeyes, those are three.
?For as young as he is, he gets it. He understands, ?This is what I need to do to help this basketball team,? ? Matta said of the 6-foot-7 wing, who has been the first guard off the bench the past four games and should be again today when Ohio State plays host to Michigan, with a share of the Big Ten lead on the line.

and talk about athleticism. I knew he could get up there but this is pretty freakish. In a recent game, Thompson, an Ohio State freshman, was running past the Buckeyes? bench when he told coach Thad Matta to take him out and put a teammate in. It wasn?t from fatigue.

Thompson, who has a 36-inch vertical leap and touched 12 feet, 1 inch during preseason testing, showed glimpses of his freakish athleticism the first two months of the season, with a few high-flying alley-oop dunks.

Someone with better technical skills will have to embed it directly... I am not quite sure how to do that here.
