Matta confirmed last night that freshman J.D. Weatherspoon was declared academically ineligible for winter quarter, which begins today. I heard shortly after fall quarter ended that it was possible a player would be ineligible for winter quarter, but Matta said then that even if it happened, it would not affect the rotation. Weatherspoon's fate seemed obvious at Indiana when he was the only reserve not put on the floor for the last 1:30 of the game.
I am not positive but I would not think so because practice time would take so much time away from his study time and that's what he needs to concentrate on. This might be a hard road for him which is unfortunate.y0yoyoin;1846834; said:is he still allowed to practice?
Weatherspoon, meanwhile, was declared academically ineligible for winter quarter, coach Thad Matta confirmed to The Dispatch last night. The news was included in the OSU Insider in the paper this morning.
Weatherspoon's ineligibility leaves the Buckeyes with nine healthy players for the time being, though he still can participate in practice.
Matta commented on what he expects from freshman J.D. Weatherspoon, who was declared academically ineligible for the winter quarter Monday.
"He?s got to learn to train his mind to understand what?s important," Matta said. "He needs to get a lot more serious and have an undersanding of why he?s really here. Basketball is a part of it, but it?s a small part of it in my mind."
- I asked Matta about playing Buford 20 minutes at Iowa, and only seven after he picked up his third foul in the first two minutes of the second half. Craft subbed for Buford and was on the court for the 16-0 run that turned the game in Ohio State's favor.
"I had a plan in my mind of when I was going to put Will back in," Matta said. "We extended (the lead) and I kind of stuck with the group there. We were playing well."
Weatherspoon Regains Eligibility, Will Travel to Newark

COLUMBUS, Ohio ? Ohio State?s bench got a little bit deeper Wednesday with the announcement that freshman J.D. Weatherspoon we be allowed to rejoin the team on a full-time basis for the trip to Newark, N.J.
?J.D. did get reinstated, so he?ll travel with us,? OSU Head Coach Thad Matta said during his Wednesday press conference.
A freshman out of Columbus Northland, Weatherspoon has not played in a game since Dec. 27, 2010 because he was ruled academically ineligible after his first quarter at Ohio State. He was allowed to continue practicing with the team, but could not travel on the road trips, including the first two rounds of the NCAA Tournament in Cleveland last weekend.
With the conclusion of winter quarter at Ohio State last week, Weatherspoon was able to regain his eligibility for spring quarter.
?With everything that he?s been through, it really shows that he?s worked hard to come into a situation like this,? said Jared Sullinger, a high school teammate of Weatherspoon?s.
