SF/PF J.D. Weatherspoon (transfer to Toledo)

J.D. is going to have a big year next year
I would agree with that but he has to work on his mid-range shot and his free-throw shooting. He does not have a very good stroke away from the basket which is about the only thing that prohibits him from being a super talent:)

Honestly he doesn't need either and could still be fine (a la Lauderdale). If he keeps working on the little things I think he'll shine. Was kind of bummed last night, seemed like NW had him scouted out. I was afraid this would happen when conference play would start.

Great Game last night, JD. Nice to hear Coach Matta giving you props, too, for your energy.

Sully and JD could be like Herb Williams and Jim Smith. Now that's going back a few years but the comparison is not bad.

I hope we continue to see JD get more minutes. More minutes = more confidence.

I would equate JD to being more like Carter Scott was back then. Carter Scott had some major hops and was like 6'3".

Jim Smith was more like Ravenal...6'8" and about 230 lb. Supposedly, Jim Smith was the best all around athlete on the team because he was so strong to go along with his jumping ability. He just didn't have the good hands and smooth moves that Herbie had.

That 1979/1980 team was arguably as talented as the 1991/1992 team and almost as talented as the 2006/2007 team. Wow.

Ransey,Scott, Williams, Smith, Kellogg.....with a bench of Tony Campbell, Marquis Miller, Todd Penn, Mitch ? (shooter from Moraga, CA), Schlichter, Ed Major, and Bryant Johnson. The depth then was similar to this year's depth.

His game reminds me of Jason Singleton from the late 90's. Not particularly skilled, but unbelievably athletic. With the right mindset, JD can definitely be a contributor.

I suppose you could call JD a poor man's Singleton. Singleton had some similar strengths and weaknesses as JD, but was a really great player for the Buckeyes. Singleton was basically the David Lighty of the team back in '99. Air Spoon hasn't gotten to that level, although his performance thus far this year has been pretty good.

Men's basketball: Ohio State gets an energy boost off the bench

At this time a year ago, J.D. Weatherspoon was saying goodbye to his Ohio State teammates each time they left campus for another Big Ten road game.

As a freshman, he didn?t pass muster academically during the fall quarter and was ruled ineligible for the winter session. He promised his parents, and told his followers on Twitter, that it would not happen again.

?Looking at my little brothers and sisters, and them looking up to me, I feel like I have to be a role model,? he said yesterday. ?I?m from Columbus, so I felt like I let a lot of people down. I had to get refocused and do what I had to do to come back on this team.?

He not only came back, but he has begun carving a role for himself on the fifth-ranked Buckeyes, who traveled to Illinois yesterday for a game tonight, with Weatherspoon on board.

With three starters in foul trouble early, Weatherspoon was among the bench players who helped OSU build a halftime lead on Saturday at Iowa. He ended up playing 16 minutes and scoring eight points.

?Every day we see him taking more pride in what he?s doing,? coach Thad Matta said.

Weatherspoon was a jumping-jack forward on the Northland High School juggernaut that won 95 of 99 games and a state championship around star center Jared Sullinger. He played on the All-Ohio Red team that won three AAU age-group national championships and sent three other players ? Sullinger, Aaron Craft and Jordan Sibert ? to Ohio State.

Weatherspoon was offered and accepted a scholarship later than the others because he initially committed to Xavier before his junior season of high school. He rescinded the commitment after that season when coach Sean Miller left for Arizona.

?We wanted to see him mature a little bit more ? watch him through his junior year,? Matta said. ?A lot of people forget that he?s very young (he turned 19 on Sept. 1). He should be a freshman in college this year.?

Weatherspoon?s lack of maturity cost him last season. Not so this one.

?At the beginning of this year, I wasn?t getting the minutes I thought I should be receiving,? Weatherspoon said yesterday. ?Instead of coming in practice the next day with a bad attitude and pouting, I just wanted to be a man about it and keep practicing hard and (trust that) everything will get better.?

Weatherspoon has grown into role at OSU

COLUMBUS -- A year ago, J.D. Weatherspoon found himself in basketball purgatory.

Academically ineligible for the winter quarter, he could practice with the top-ranked Buckeyes, but not play on game nights or travel with the team.

"Looking at my little brother and sisters and them looking up to me, I feel that I have to be a role model. I'm from Columbus, so I felt like I let a lot of people down," Weatherspoon admitted. "I had to get refocused and do what I got to do to come back with this team."

He got his work done in the classroom and made it back to the squad in time to dress for the Sweet 16 loss to Kentucky. Nevertheless, it was a lost freshman season. Weatherspoon played just 54 minutes in 10 early games, averaging 1.8 points and 0.8 rebounds.

In essence, Weatherspoon easily could have been a senior in high school at that point with a birthday on Sept. 1, 1992. It's why Ohio State was slow to woo the athletic 6-foot-6 forward out of Northland.

"We wanted to see him mature a little bit more," OSU coach Thad Matta said of deciding to watch his progress through his junior season in high school before making a scholarship offer.

Instead, Weatherspoon picked Xavier. But when coach Sean Miller left for Arizona, he decommitted -- giving the Buckeyes another shot at him.

"I love the fact that with J.D., he was coming from a storied program, a winning program. He had won a state championship. He and Jared (Sullinger's) record throughout their four years there was astonishing," Matta said. "The big thing was how hard are you going to work when you get here and hone in on the skills?"

I think JD transferring is the right decision for him, and OSU as well. I don't think he was going to play much in the future at OSU. Unlike Sibert, JD was never in the regular playing group and it was going to be unlikely for him to make the kind of improvement it would've taken for him to crack the rotation. It appeared multiple other guys were ahead of him in the playing group - they would either go to 2 bigs (Amir + Evan) or go small (with Sam or Q at the 4) if Deshaun was out of the lineup. I don't see JD being particularly selfish in transferring - guys who don't play other than in garbage minutes leave all the time, even on great teams. He was never consistently in the playing group, and could make something out of more minutes at a lower level. Good luck to him wherever he goes.

At the outset, before someone says it, I'm sure that what Jake means is not that JD Weatherspoon is irrelevant.

Buckeye fans were very excited when Weatherspoon chose to stay at home and play for the Buckeyes. Unfortunately, his early adaptation to university academic demands, and relative ability to contribute in the mix of these players as a team, have made his playing time brief and prospects for improvements unlikely.

Whenever someone transfers out, I think of the incredible disappointment that they must feel. How far is that fall from the heady days of reaching one's dream to the realization that it will not be fulfilled just inches before you on the playing floor?

To have been given such a chance was the unfulfilled dream of my childhood. To just have one moment to walk out on that floor as a Buckeye was all that I wanted. The stark reality of my own limitations, after so much work, was an incredible disappointment that I felt for years.

I think it would be worse yet to see that dream up close and personal, only inches away, yet so partially fulfilled, especially when one has such high expectations.

Best of luck young man. You have handled your disappointments with an emotional maturity beyond your years. It tells me that you will be successful somewhere else and later in life.

Go well!
