SF David Lighty (Most Career Buckeye Wins, ASVEL Lyon-Villeurbanne Basket - France)

No, I don't think what Lighty said is exactly contrary to what I've said was possible. He made it pretty clear he wasn't sure when he'd come back - that's important. My mantra here is this thing is up in the air still, and Lighty didn't really indicate that this was a set in stone 4-5 week away thing. I could be wrong, but I'm holding out hope :)

I've just heard the "latest" word from Matta on this injury via today's Bucknuts radio hour at 54:38 (link pasted below) ... Matta said they (I'm assuming "they" means the doctors) did take a look at Lighty's foot "late last week" and "really couldn't tell anything" and it "looked good" and it was "too early in the process to really know anything yet"

So Matta and I are in agreement on this one that they don't really know yet. I hope more of you will be more open to my stance now rather than bashing me for my open mindedness.

Obviously with an injury you never know the exact date to when one would come back...That is why they give time frames...And obvioulsy there is a pretty big variance with this one, considering the original timeline was 6-12...

What I reported was 4-5 which was what I got from someone very close to the situation...Obviously it can change, and I did give a 2 week time frame for when that return could be...

It is healing pretty well, and that timeline of 4-5 weeks is what the doctor gave Lighty...So after looking at xrays one woudl think that would be a pretty good guess as to when Lighty could return...

From a personal standpoint, I know a little bit about foot injuries and bone fractures in the foot are very complicated so sometimes it is very difficult to give a definite time upon an athletes return to playing. Even now, I don't think that the doctors have a real good grasp on when he could return. I highly doubt if we will see him until mid February.

After further reflection, it appears that they didn't really jump the gun in evaluating Lighty because "late last week" (i.e., Friday or Saturday) would've been the very beginning of the fourth week after Lighty's surgery (a.k.a. Days 22 and 23). I couldn't remember whether Matta had said they'd re-evaluate him in week 4 or week 5, but doing it on Day 22 technically falls within "week four". Anyway, you all know where I stand on the level of certainty that can be derived from this evaluation.

I guess it all depends on who you talk to regarding the status of David.

The Lighty watch

The injured team captain and glue of the defense is scheduled to have the fifth metatarsal on his left foot X-rayed again Friday, one day after the six-week anniversary of his surgery. The original prognosis was for him to miss six to 12 weeks, and a team spokesman indicated yesterday it will be more than six. Lighty will continue to wear a protective boot on the foot and walk on an underwater treadmill, the spokesman said, but "as far as (him) running, I don't think we're close to that."

Lighty's going all the way to Oregon for rehab?
That type of rehab equipment is available all around Columbus. I do not think that he will have to go to Oregon to find a underwater treadmill:)

Fans better get used to life without Lighty

Columbus -- Ohio State junior forward David Lighty had his broken right foot X-rayed Thursday. And nothing else changed.

Now six weeks removed from the surgery that inserted a pin in Lighty's foot to stabilize the broken bone under his pinky toe, no news isn't good news for Ohio State fans.

"I thought everybody thought I was going to surprise everyone and he was going to play tomorrow," Ohio State men's basketball coach Thad Matta said Friday after answering several questions about Lighty's timetable. "He's not."

Today, the Buckeyes (14-5, 4-4 Big Ten) visit Indiana attempting to get back over .500 in conference play, knowing the slog for the foreseeable future will continue without their captain.

Matta tossed out two weeks as a guess as to the earliest point that Lighty could return to practice, but there is no timetable as long as Lighty isn't putting pressure on the foot while running or jumping. Matta said he has been fitted with inserts for his shoes to take pressure off the break.

The Buckeyes have played 12 games without Lighty and have 10 regular-season games remaining. If Lighty did return to practice in two weeks, then take a week to get back in shape, he'd be available for the last four or five games of the regular season.

But in that scenario, though no medical redshirt would be guaranteed, the Buckeyes perhaps would have to consider keeping Lighty on the sideline to preserve a year of eligibility.

Lighty's return still far off
Bill Rabinowitz here, filling in for the great Bob Baptist:

Just got back from OSU's news conference heading into tomorrow's game at Indiana. Some highlights:

David Lighty had his left foot X-rayed yesterday to gauge how well he's healing. Buckeyes coach Thad Matta said he hadn't heard the results yet. If it seems odd that Matta didn't know, it's really an indication that Lighty's return is hardly imminent.

Lighty had a screw surgically inserted into his fractured foot, and bone has to grow around the screw as part of the healing process. But Matta wasn't on pins and needles to hear the results because even if the bone has grown sufficiently around the screw, that's only one step in the rehab process. Lighty has to then feel comfortable putting weight on his foot, feel secure making cuts on it and get back into playing shape.

"We're a long way away," Matta said.

When Lighty was injured in mid-December, the timetable for his return was estimated at 6-12 weeks. It is becoming increasingly clear that it'll be closer to 12 than 6. If that's the case, the Buckeyes and Lighty will have to decide whether it's wise to have him return at all this year or apply for a medical redshirt instead.

"No question," Matta said. "I think one of the biggest things with David is, 'How much can he do?' Would it be fair to David to say it?s going to take you three weeks to get back (once he starts practicing)? I don?t care who he is. He?s not going to be in the type of shape he needs to be in to play. There are so many things we have to look at."

It definitely wouldn't be benificial to this years team if he ended up redshirting. But the 10' class would become very much like the 06' Class if David were to redshirt. We'd have some senior leadership with Lighty,Diebler and Lauderdale, barring injuries or transfers...along with a great incoming freshman class.....

With the exception of Lauderdale and Diebler only being Sophomores now, I agree.

Lighty likely won't be back in Week 6, which was the best-case scenario, as we're already in the middle of Week 6.

I'm starting to think the OSU team doctors are becoming an obstacle that they shouldn't be. I mean, this was an injury that Xavier's Lionel Chalmers came back from in 5.5 weeks. This is an injury that OSU still doesn't know how long it's going to take Lighty to get back from. Consider some other cases - Kansas' Brandon Rush returned to play (and was in fact actually playing in college games) after having ACL surgery in 5.5 months; Walter Offutt was held out of pickup ball until 7.5 months had elapsed from his surgery and I'm sure the extraordinary precaution taken with Offutt has held back his conditioning this season. It's possible that Greg Oden could've played against North Carolina his freshman year, but he wasn't given a strength test prior to that game - they didn't test him in-between the UNC game and the prior game, they waited until after the UNC game to give him another test - but somehow he was able to play in the very next game, yet they didn't even try to see if he was strong enough to play in the UNC game??? The evidence is mounting that the OSU doctors are exercising too much caution & it's a detriment to the team. You also have the Kecman surgery, which was somehow put off until Jan. 29th yet the injury occurred prior to the 13th - why delay it that long?

There is a difference between exercising ordinary care (compared to other doctors) and exercising extreme care. I just wish the doctors would be more ordinary and less extreme with their plans for recovery.

It seems that either the OSU medical staff isn't among the best in their field or they're being excessively careful with injuries. I think the latter is true.
