SF David Lighty (Most Career Buckeye Wins, ASVEL Lyon-Villeurbanne Basket - France)

i think we've agreed on this before Bill. IMO, david could score no points and still be an asset on the court because of his D. obviously that wouldn't be ideal, but if evan is putting up 20 per game its not a big deal.

I agree 14......I'm not sure evreyone appreciates what David allows this team to do defensively though. Not saying you don't.

But running a full court press with David playing the 4, significantly improves a press. The guy can defend every inch of the court...literally. When Buford comes in, you're giving up a lot of defense(because he can't defend the baseline against bigs, and Evan Turner is more effective on the perimeter getting in passing lanes...Evan will probably take David's spot in the zone), and when Lauderdale and Mullens play together you can't press.

Anyways, I'm excited to see Buford get more minutes. His pull up game is NBA ready. Hopefully the extended minutes improve his defense. Honestly, every time William touches the ball, I anticipate a pretty good look at the hoop. And its fun to see the arc he puts on the ball.

Damn, this sucks, from a talent and leadership standpoint (not to mention depth).

Hope DL can make it back in February. :(

I agree, just sick about it! He seemed to just be getting his groove on, too. Things happen and things happen as a result, lets just hope its all good. We need our boy Buford to 5star step it up, now. Best wishes, DL!!

It's a bad break: Foot injury will sideline Buckeyes' Lighty for up to 3 months

Terry Gilliam/Associated PressAn awkward step on a fast-break basket during Wednesday's victory over Jacksonville will idle OSU junior David Lighty for perhaps the entire Big Ten schedule.
COLUMBUS -- Just when he was finding his offensive game, Ohio State junior forward David Lighty could be lost for the rest of the regular season. While tying his career high with 21 points Wednesday night, Lighty broke the fifth metatarsal in his left foot, the long bone on the outside of the foot, when he landed awkwardly after making a fast-break basket with about six minutes to play in an 81-68 win over Jacksonville. Athletic trainer Vince O'Brien said Thursday night that Lighty initially believed he just rolled his ankle.
"He didn't think much of it," O'Brien said. "He's a pretty tough kid."
Lighty looked fine during postgame interviews Wednesday, but O'Brien checked the foot again and discovered it was tender. X-rays Thursday morning identified a small fracture and surgery was performed Thursday afternoon to insert a screw and stabilize his foot.
O'Brien said Lighty will be on crutches for at least a month and it should be about six weeks before he can resume any basketball activity. The timetable announced by Ohio State in a release, 6-12 weeks, is a pretty big window. O'Brien said he has heard anecdotal evidence about recovery periods of everything from 4-14 weeks.

Missing six weeks would keep Lighty out for 12 games and allow him to return against Indiana on Jan. 31. Missing 12 weeks would keep Lighty out for the remaining 22 games of the regular season and see him back for the start of the Big Ten Tournament on March 12 or 13.

I broke the same bone in my foot in similar fashion more than 20 years ago playing a pick-up game, rolled it and thought it was just a sprain, me being a wimp though I was done for the night, went to the hospital next morning and found out about the fifth metatarsal (same bone Keith Byars broke) I was to put no weight on it for 6 weeks. That is probably the only similarities, I had muscle atrophy were DL will be able to work out in the pool to some extent, I had no screw inserted to stabilize the bone. I would think that DL will be back before March madness with the kind of shape he is in and the kind of care he will recieve.

It is a chance for someone to step up and contribute more. I think we'll see more of the big lineup as well as Buford and maybe even a little more Offutt for his defense, and maybe Kecman will see the court more than he otherwise would have. His defense and intensity will definitely be missed, but his replacements came to tOSU to ball so here is their chance. At least there will be a little break (noo pun intended) in period before the B10 season starts, and if DL does return this year, the Bucks may well be better for it.

Get well soon young man, you will be misssed.

I'm pretty familiar with the injury too. Fracturing the 5th metatarsal is almost always an injury that is slow to heal due to the low amount of blood flowing to that part of the foot. It is really encouraging that he got surgery so quickly afterwards and got the bone set in place. Crossing my fingers he'll be back at full strength later in the season, but the last thing any of us wants is bringing him back too early. Get well homie.

Truly sad for DL. He is the glue that binds that team together, as an upper classman should. Kinda think he subliminated his scoring to meld the other four guys into a 'team', doing all the things necessary (other than scoring). His D was very good, and just overall play made him a difference maker. Don't know who said it, but they were correct, in that team will miss his leadership. I do believe that the young'uns will step up, but when they play against a veteran-laden team, it is iffy whether they can rise over that top. We'll see, and hope for the best. The Buckeyes are still a talented team, and here's hoping for David's speedy return (but not until he's healed).

I'm not sure why people (reporters or not) are dismissing the possibility that Lighty would return in late January. We were told Lighty would be out for 6-12 weeks. Jan. 28th would be 6 weeks to the day of his surgery. By all accounts, his recovery has gone well and there have been no setbacks. Lionel Chalmers returned in 5.5 weeks with the exact same injury when Matta was at Xavier. Hopefully Lighty will return in 17 days rather than 28 or so. IMO, the "early to mid-February" return discussion is about putting a conservative estimate on it rather than some clear-cut statement that he won't be able to come back prior to then.

4-5 weeks is from people that know...Early February at the earliest, probably mid woul be more realistic...

I'm skeptical that there are "people that know" that. Word from Matta when this happened was that it would be 6-12 weeks and they'd evaluate his progress at Week 4 or 5 & we're not yet to that time when they determined they'd evaluate his progress. Is Matta the type to "jump the gun" and evaluate him before he said he would? I doubt it. Until I see some statement from Matta regarding his progress, I'll continue to believe that a late January return for Lighty is entirely possible.
