SF David Lighty (Most Career Buckeye Wins, ASVEL Lyon-Villeurbanne Basket - France)

Matta had some comments on Lighty on his call in show...Basically said he had his best game of his career 3 games ago at home against Michigan...

Said that he needs to continue to concentrate on rebounding because when he does he can be a very good rebounder...Said he is a hard worker and is doing everything they want from him, just not getting the ball to go down...But they all know that they are going to get 100% effort from him at all times...

Roots run deep for former Vikings
David S. Glasier, [email protected]
03/06/2008

CANTON - It wasn't on anyone's social calendar, but there was one heck of a Villa Angela-St. Joseph reunion Wednesday night at Canton Fieldhouse.
David Lighty, Class of 2006, made the drive up from Columbus to show his support for ninth-year VASJ coach Dave Wojciechowski (Class of 1990), standout senior forward Ashen Ward (Class of 2008) and the rest of the Vikings as they faced Smithville in the Division III regional semifinal.
Lighty, as any savvy hoops fan from these parts is well aware, signed with Ohio State after four outstanding seasons at VASJ. He's a sophomore starter now for Thad Matta at OSU.

Lighty never stopped smiling as he exchanged handshakes and hugs with fans, VASJ teachers and administrators and, of course, Ward and the other current Vikings making their way to the locker room.
"This is all about heritage. Once a Viking, always a Viking," said a smiling Lighty, decked out head-to-toe in OSU gear.

5-5 FG, 1-1 3pt, 1-1 FT, 5 Reb, 12 pts. A number of deflections, steals, jump balls that don't show up on the espn box score.

Held Drew Neitzel to 6 pts, coming on 2 early 3's with heavy screening.

I think today was one of his best all-around games since he has been here at Ohio State. I love the fact that he took it to the basket more than just settling for his perimeter jumper. He also seemed to get more involved in the rebounding especially on defense. Props to him!

Lighty once again has finished the season strong, much like he did last year...

He is finding his niche more and more coming off screens in the lane and getting some easy jumpers, along with his defense continue to be very good...His 3 point shot has also improved...

We are undefeated on the season when Lighty scores 13 or more points...Hopefully next season he can average about that...

That is an interesting stat. David is now playing like I thought he would be playing at the beginning of the season. It's almost like he and Turner both decided it was time to take it to the basket more and it has really benefited the team. Let's hope for those 13 points tomorrow night:)

I also think that alot of Lighty's success down the stretch has been his new role in the offense, coming off screens in good positions for him and not standing in the corner waiting to shoot 3's...

He still needs to continue working on free throw shooting and 3 point shooting...

For the life of me, I will never understand why a kid that age, and I am talking about 95% of kids, then play basketball can match shoot more than 70% if not 75% from the FT line. I can understand a big guy having problems but if you are is 6'6" + or - 1 inch I just don't understand. It is just repetition and practice. I am not saying that everybody should be as good as Butler the guys who play his position should be around 80%.

Trust me when I say that Lighty is one of the hardest workers in terms of working on his shot...

I truly believe that he will improve in both areas by next season...

But I agree with as much time as some of these guys are in the gym it is troublesome that they just can't shoot at a higher percentage...

Lighty followed up a promising freshman campaign with a relatively marginal second season. Although he put up respectable numbers, he did not quite live up to the expectations that many had for him after his strong performance at the U-19 Championships in the summer of ?07. Regardless, the combination of size, strength, and defensive potential displayed by Lighty is enough to make him one of the top prospects that the fairly weak Big 10 has to offer.

Sporting the same muscular physique that he has in the past, Lighty has the total package physically for a power wing player. He is blessed with legit height, a nice wingspan, and appears to have reacquired the explosiveness that he had as a prep star before he suffered a serious knee injury.

On the offensive end, Lighty does the bulk of his damage slashing to the rim and scoring in transition. Using his exceptionally strong frame and nice first step, he is able to finish around the cup with either hand and shield off bigger, more athletic defenders in the process. When unable to find his way to the rim Lighty has shown nice potential as a passer, showing nice vision with his unselfish style of play.

Men's basketball: Buckeyes looking to Lighty as go-to guy

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

JEFF HINCKLEY Dispatch
Junior David Lighty, being recorded for in-game videos, will be counted on to fire up his teammates for a run at the NCAA Tournament this season.

Evan Turner remembers lying sleepily in the hallway of the Ohio State men's basketball team's dormitory one morning this summer, waiting on his teammates to leave for a dawn workout. "Everybody else walked by me," he said. "Dave picked me up.
"He's one of the most amazing people I've met in my life. He's always happy. It'll be like 5:30 in the morning and he'll be yelling, cheering and screaming. He won't leave anybody behind.
"To see coach Matta hand the team over to him, I was real happy for him. He's just a real nice guy, a blue-collar guy."
Coach Thad Matta has asked every player to take ownership this season of another talented but infant team devoid of seniors. Who they look to for leadership, though, will be David Lighty, a junior and the only player remaining of the nine who won a Big Ten championship and played in the NCAA championship game two years ago.
"He's the only guy," Matta said. "So I think he's the guy you've got to kind of turn to and hope that he accepts that and does a good job with it."
Lighty got thumbs up from his teammates yesterday when they met with the media in the Schottenstein Center. Preseason practice begins Friday.
"He's a loud guy. He likes to scream and yell and have a good time," sophomore Jon Diebler said. "Last year, I think he took a back seat because he was a sophomore. This year, he's done a great job of showing everybody the ropes, getting on people when they need it. That's going to make us better."
