I don’t care what anyone says about NBA paths via overseas professional markets where you can get paid along the way as you are developing your skills. I mean I understand the logic but I see that as being very short sided. It’s never a bad idea to get your education and I just can’t see where you will ever regret having that degree.

For every Tim Duncan that didn’t “need it” there are probably 10,000 that did.

Hone your skills, enjoy the college experience (yes the classes too), get your degree, grow up, and maybe you make it to the NBA. Maybe you don’t. But here is the thing....if you have the skills to make it to the NBA, the college years won’t slow you down. It’s not like a RB who only has so much punishment they can handle. If you have NBA talent it will still be there after 3 years or 4. If you don’t have them but you can make a living playing ball overseas then go do that....after getting your degree.

I think we need to find a transfer at the PG position..............I would be comfortable finding a kid who has to sit the year.........
if KW goes Europe professional and Whitt reclassifies, I would go and try and get Carter Whitt if Carter does not reclassify I guess it all depends upon what KW decides to do

There's also a difference between guys like LaQuinton Ross and Deshaun Thomas leaving early to play overseas versus Alonzo Gaffney who could barely see the floor at Ohio State

gaffney probably sees himself as another darius bazley. but good luck, alonzo, immediately signing a shoe contract with $1m guaranteed... especially in this uncertain economic climate.

And here is the thing....even if you don’t leave with a degree but you have 2-3 years under your belt, it’s so much easier to finish that degree later.

My point is that so many players see their basketball skills being their primary income producing abilities and the education/degree getting in the way and these don’t have to be mutually exclusive pursuits.

You can absolutely pursue both and the growth of opportunities to earn a living overseas with hoops has only helped kids to pursue both but they don’t see it that way.

When the NBA was the only way to make good money with hoop skills there was more of a reason to leave school early. There’s actually less pressure now to leave early if you think about it.

i wish alonzo the best. he's still the guy who stuck with the program despite matta's ouster (edit: my timeline is a little off; gaffney committed well after ho1tmann's hire). he never created any off-the-court problems and was an avid cheerleader from the bench. i respect all of that.

anywho, we talk about "writing on the wall," but i think the initial writing was gaffney not developing his body during the prep year at brewster. unless you're kevin durant, it's just about impossible to impact the game as much as you want if your legs are so weak that your knees are always buckling.

And invest all that money in a low cost index fund that you don’t touch until you are 60 right?

I mean, nobody blows through that cash frivolously.

Agreed he seems like a good kid, and no drama type who was a good bench cheerleader. I just think so many young people are penny wise and pound foolish these days and they are in a massive rush to “get it while they can.” Slow down, think big picture. You absolutely can have it all if you are smart. Again, I don’t have the same view with all sports and all position groups. A high level college RB only has so many shots they can take, and AG doesn’t have those issues to consider.
