SF Alonzo Gaffney (transfer to NW Florida, transfer to Arizona St.)

What is the point in transferring if he wants to turn pro? Delay being pro for 2 more years, for what?
nothing about gaffney right now makes any season. i mean, it's one thing to want to turn pro. it's quite another to want to turn pro when what little you've done in college shows that you're not close to being ready. and then it's quite another still when pro basketball both nationally and internationally are in a state of uncertain flux. right now, gaffney is at the intersection of bad decisions and worse options.

i hate to say it and i know this probably comes off as harsh and mean, but alonzo looks like he's just a couple years away from slipping into basketball obscurity. i hope he proves me wrong.

Just don't get it.. if you aren't NBA caliber after 2 years maybe you should get your degree. Unreal.

Mind-numbing. As others have said, he is nowhere close to being ready to go pro. Hell, probably not close to playing a major part on our team next year. Speculation here, but I would have to think there is more to it, especially with all the other transfers. It is concerning to keep seeing kids leave in mass exodus format from our bball program.

Agree. Holtmann is maintaining each transfer had different reasons but it is not a good sign when 3 kids transfer during the off season........

It doesn't bother me that Gaffney transferred. Dude barely played and his head clearly wasn't with it. He had a long ways to go before he could have been at the level of a good B1G player. Mentally, he just didn't get it, he was too slow to play the perimeter which is where he was supposed to be.

I have great confidence that Gaffney is going to be replaced by someone who will do more to help the program than he did.

I do have a problem with Chicken Littles acting like there are big problems with the OSU program right now because some guys are leaving unexpectedly. Holt doesn't let guys play a lot of minutes unless they are good defensively - would you really rather have the last couple of years of the Matta era where guys could act casual and play 30+ minutes anyway? I am sure you wouldn't.

This program has an identity of grit and teamwork, if you can't subscribe to that, then too bad. OSU isn't a program where all the bench players are trash anymore. Holt is building a roster to where the backups are almost as good as the starters, and that's not all bad. In fact, the deeper teams tend to fare better in NCAA tournament play. But one byproduct of having more good players is guys are going to be on the bench who can transfer and start elsewhere.

Muhammed:huh: count me in as one of the guys who hates to see the basketball program become a transfer merry-go-round Holtmann needs to get it right when he recruits
I see "getting it right" as having the talent to maintain a top-25, NCAA tournament-level program, and so I believe Holt to be doing quite admirably in getting it right in recruiting. Losing players only matters when the product on the court suffers, and under CH it hasn't really so far and I don't think it will next year.

it would be nice if he got it right the first time he recruited a player not satisfied with a top 25 NCAA finish it would be nice to win the Big Ten And may be go to the elite 8

There is not a coach in the country that could "get it right" then. Every program has to deal with transfers as a basic fact of life now and try to use it to their advantage (i.e. bring in transfers who are better players or better fits for need than the players who chose to leave--something I think OSU's staff has done with the possible exception of Carton, who is a unique situation).

Programs are losing players left and right and they just have to be ready and adapt. Muhammad leaves, OSU brings in a guy that can play PG after Walker's gone. scUM loses DeJulius, they add Mike Smith. Nebraska loses Cam Mack, they add Trey McGowens. And so on and so on, all around the country. Even a program like Wisconsin that recruits and roster manages very specifically for retention, development, and class balance purposes lost their 6th man and probably most promising player in Kobe King to B1G foe Nebraska.

And now OSU is looking for a grad transfer guard to give them some definite backcourt depth next season. They are doing the best they can to work with the circumstances and keep this thing rolling.
