Say, whatever happened to...?

I'll add that in addition to politics and whatever else that is upsetting people, the nature of the Internet and the posters themselves are changing (getting older).

Facebook, twitter, Instagram, and god knows what else are the places to share Internet opinions these days- I don't think we're getting an influx of the youngins.

Additionally, as people get older, I think it's natural to stop thinking it's a good idea/wanting to post your every thought online for the world to (potentially) see.

As much as a lot of us enjoy BuckeyePlanet, I think Internet message boards (without content drivers/click bate like 11w) are becoming outdated as a means of communication- certainly for younger folks.

Throw on top of that all the things being talked about which drive people away and you've got decreasing participation.

I used to spend a lot of time at the O-Zone forums back in the early 2000s. They had/have an off-topic forum for things like politics. I'd post on there quite often during that time period (I remember arguing about the Iraq War, pretty much on my own, and it got to be too much). I hardly spend any time there now. The format wasn't very user friendly and the posters were more personal.

I prefer this place. It sucks that the contributors have dwindled down. But I have healthy respect for those with whom I disagree. I don't feel alone expressing my opinions. And, quite frankly, the discourse tends to be more intelligent here.

Eleven Warriors and Twitter probably has more to do with there being less contributors here. There are just more options now. I don't think it really has anything to do with the Poli forum. You can take that forum or leave it. You have to want to participate to be bothered by anything that gets said in there.

I still lurk - I know that I am not one of the heavy contributors that are missed - but I wanted to drop a line and let you know that as someone reading when I can: I miss all of those posters, too. I don't know that you can get them back - reading JLBs tweets is a good example - but, you can make whatever changes you guys think will help (opt in like rumor mill) & keep any good/solid newcomers on board.

Personally, I always enjoyed the political (and religious) talk, but back then, it didn't trickle (too heavy, anyways) into the rest of the board. I enjoyed having my views challenged by people with more life experience than myself, and BP actually (as fucking weird as this is to type out loud) helped me grow as a person during very formative years of my life. I think there is value there - but - reading posts here from the "regulars" something needs to change if you all see the writing on the wall, so to speak.

I stayed out of the poli forum for years for reasons expressed by Jax. I ventured back into it after the election because, well, I've come to pretty much hate both parties, so it's hard to get offended by any of it. That being said, I remember a few years ago, seconding a proposal by (I believe) @BayBuck to get rid of it entirely and wouldn't shed any tears if it were gone.

We have definitely been down this same road before... A lot of the same sentiments were expressed here in 2009:

Speaking of which... say, whatever happened to @stxbuck ?

I have no memory of that particular thread. Seems I should, lol.

I always thought it was "Sticks" buck, which is to say, that's how I'd pronounce his nickname in my head... then, I see Muck call him "St. X" buck and I think... well, that makes a lot more sense.

Huh, guess that does make sense! In my BP head-canon he was an OSU library person, as we use STX as the location code for the Book Depository, which some old-timers still pronounce as "Styx".

I am so damned depressed by the political climate in this country that I don't even venture in to the Poli forum all that often. I do my best to avoid any and all coverage of the ass hattery going on at this time. Self censorship if you will.....I see this as a better alternative then not hanging on BP for all the rest of the great conversation and thread topics.
