S Vonn Bell (All B1G, All-American, National Champion, Cincinnati Bengals)

Played like an extremely talented freshman last night. Some really awesome plays and a couple of bad plays. I can't remember many plays where he wasn't involved or at least really close to the tackle. The kid has a nose for the ball. Very excited about what this kid will bring to the table next year.

Really liked what I saw from him last night. He seemed to play in coverage well enough (considering the two monsters at WR they had to cover) and he made an absolutely huge play that deflated Clemson in the first half.

The future is bright.

basically, he played like many/most knew he would have played early in the season. Actually, had he gotten some meaningful PT early, he may have been the difference between beating MSU and Clemson and what we got instead.

I'm so over the "Luke Fickell is a loyal Buckeye therefore he deserves no scrutiny" crowd

Agree on the above but I think the lack of Bell earlier on was more a Withers thing (or Coombs). I always got the feeling Urban wanted Vonn in there, which was weird that we waited so long though. I do agree he needed in much earlier though.

It's not just "Luke is a loyal Buckeye." He's been on the defensive staff since 2004. People have seen Luke as a part of successful defenses, recruiting classes, and player development here before. The complete collapse of this defense is just shocking. Throwing Withers and Coombs, whose units have been terrible since they arrived, under the bus first and giving Luke the benefit of the doubt isn't unnatural.

good points....but since 2004, there has been a gradual decline in defensive effectiveness. This has been happening while Luke's duties have expanded. He learned under the master of bend but don't break....Heacock. We've done a lot of breaking the past 3 years....a ton.

Since 2004? Not buying that..we've had some great defenses in that span. The 2011 defense wasn't that bad either...the past 2 years they have gotten worse and that corresponds with Heacock leaving.

Withers obviously was not up to holding his end of the bargain..anyone that thinks he wasn't shoved out the door by Meyer is delusional..you don't go from OSU DC to becoming the head coach at a middle of the road fcs program

gradually our defenses have been softening.....we've had some very good ones. But none in the same stratosphere as 2002 and 2003. None. Talent + Coaching = overall effectiveness. We've had some good coaching all along the way....some not so good - especially lately. But while our talent has dropped the past 3 years, our coaching didn't do a damn thing to compensate.

100% of the defensive staff needs to do better than they've shown the past 2 years. Can they ? I'm not sure they can. As for Fickell, it's his philosophy forged over a 10+ year career to play soft, sit back and wait for the other guy to make a mistake. That is not remotely close to what we did in 2002.

There was a TD scored on a long pass by Clemson...maybe their second TD of the night, and Vonn was the one covering the receiver. I was at work so I'm not positive who was supposed to be covering him, but by Vonn's reaction, it was someone else. He was pointing and talking.
LB blew coverage on the TE forcing (or because they screwed up) the safety to help over top. Leaving Vonn on Watkins 1 on 1.. Vonn played it like he had help over the top.. .
