S Vonn Bell (All B1G, All-American, National Champion, Cincinnati Bengals)

He seemed upset. I thought, either he's yelling at a teammate that isn't even looking at him so people won't think it's his fault (like I used to do in P.A.L. games in HS. When they'd notice me yelling at them, I'd clap, shake my head yes, and say something encouraging. People thought I was a leader)...or he's pretty pissed that someone's mistake cost 6 pts and made him look silly.

Damn, that's a Mark Titus-esque move if I've ever seen one.

good points....but since 2004, there has been a gradual decline in defensive effectiveness. This has been happening while Luke's duties have expanded. He learned under the master of bend but don't break....Heacock. We've done a lot of breaking the past 3 years....a ton.
Since 2004? Not buying that..we've had some great defenses in that span. The 2011 defense wasn't that bad either...the past 2 years they have gotten worse and that corresponds with Heacock leaving.

Withers obviously was not up to holding his end of the bargain..anyone that thinks he wasn't shoved out the door by Meyer is delusional..you don't go from OSU DC to becoming the head coach at a middle of the road fcs program

...and 2004 was easily the worst defense of the Tressel era.

gradually our defenses have been softening.....we've had some very good ones. But none in the same stratosphere as 2002 and 2003. None. Talent + Coaching = overall effectiveness. We've had some good coaching all along the way....some not so good - especially lately. But while our talent has dropped the past 3 years, our coaching didn't do a damn thing to compensate.

100% of the defensive staff needs to do better than they've shown the past 2 years. Can they ? I'm not sure they can. As for Fickell, it's his philosophy forged over a 10+ year career to play soft, sit back and wait for the other guy to make a mistake. That is not remotely close to what we did in 2002.

2004 was the weakest year..not shocking given the personal we lost. Disagree that you can't compare other defenses we had to the 02 and 03 one...2005 was on par..the stats show it. The 2009 defense is massively underrated by Buckeye fans...the depth on that defensive line was amazing, they actually beat the 2002 defense in just about every statistical category (Of course, there is the argument that the Big Ten was stronger in 02 that certainly has merit)

So Vonn played well. The whole game was a little surreal with all the screaming and excitement and drinking. I admittedly didnt have much of a clue who was doing what down on the field. Very glad to hear Vonn played well. You win some, you lose some. We were still sporting our osu gear around south beach on Saturday. I am excited to be a buckeye and very excited about the next few years. Tons of young talent coming in. Vonn is one key piece in that puzzle.

With Bell and Powell, I feel just fine at safety next year.

Powell still makes me nervous. He made 1 play all year in the Michigan game. It was a great play, don't get me wrong. He also left the tight end uncovered on 3rd down for Clemson's go ahead score. A field goal there completely changes the game. We would have only needed 3 points to win instead of a touchdown.

I guess he was going to run through 20 other players and tackle Sammy Watkins on the goal line on the screen to the far side of the field instead of just staying home, covering the tight end and letting his teammates do their part.

I don't even know what to think anymore. On the two biggest plays of the season, we flat out didn't cover guys and left them open in the endzone (3rd and Goal agains MSU up by 4 and 3rd and Goal against Clemson up by 2)

Powell was only a redshirt frosh starting his first year. There will of course be bumps in the road, vonn had issues as well. It's to be expected. Armani Reeves also had issues during the year since he was only a true frosh getting minutes, but by the orange bowl he actually played pretty well. Tyvis was top 10 in tackles on the team and had 2ints, not a bad year at all. And vonn is young and will only get better. I'm less worried about our S coverage than I have been the past few years with Bryant and Barnett who were more hitters than coverage guys.

Reeves was a sophmore. He was one of the PSU flips (spence, cam williams, schutt, reeves)
