S Kurt Coleman (All B1G, All-American)

Coleman back with a bang
Senior captain takes interception 89 yards for TD

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

Ohio State safety Kurt Coleman wasted no time in announcing his return from a one-game suspension.

With an 89-yard interception return for a first-quarter touchdown, Coleman set in motion one of the more bizarre wins in Ohio State history, 31-13 over Wisconsin in Ohio Stadium.

But for Coleman, more important was getting back on the field after having been suspended by the Big Ten for a helmet-first hit on Illinois quarterback Eddie McGee late in a game two weeks ago.

"It's definitely a great feeling for me to come back after a week off and really help this team out as much as I can," said Coleman, a senior who said he watched last week's win over Indiana in his locked apartment. "That's really all I've been asked to do, and that's all that I do."

Coleman's big play certainly was well-timed. The Badgers were threatening to score on their third drive of a scoreless game and had a first-and-10 at the OSU 31-yard line when the tables were suddenly turned.

Wisconsin quarterback Scott Tolzien, under pressure from defensive tackle Doug Worthington and linebacker Austin Spitler, threw the ball straight to Coleman at the Ohio State 11-yard line. He did the rest.

"I had great blockers, and my team led me all the way down the field," said Coleman, who stayed close to the Ohio State sideline for the last 60 yards. "I did the easy part."

Coleman might just be playing himself into a late first/early second round selection.

not so sure about that (a first day pick.....yes). But he played one terrific ball game today as did the rest of the defense. The interception (Coleman's) however was all about the D-line putting some serious pressure on the QB, and then I loved the transition blocking that allowed Coleman to take it to the house once the interception was made.

How this kid isn't mentioned as a possible All-Big Ten and/or All-American at the start of every game is beyond me. He has been solid at every start all season long. He may not be the best Safety in America, but is one of the best.

To be honest, there should only be two safeties talked about more in terms of their play right now. Eric Berry and Taylor Mays (and in Mays case that's even iffy right now).
I'll take Coleman over Mays. Mays tends to overpursue and get beat. Pryor's inexperience didn't let him take advantage. Coleman is just plain spectacular whenever he's played.

I agree. Mays gave up the big play to Sanzo against us. Obviously I haven't watched all of USC's games but I don't think he's forced the amt of turnovers Coleman has. Kurt hasn't given up any big plays either. Might not be blowing up defenseless receivers like Mays but he's a sure tackler and is playing at a high level every time he takes the field.

I'd say right now, stats would be helpful for this debate.

Besides, we all know Berry is going to win all the Defensive awards and accolades off of his music video alone:

Correct me if I'm wrong, but wasn't the pass to Sanzo in that game when Mays was out of the game?

Kurt Coleman is still OSU’s best big-play guy. After watching Ohio State’s defense dominate Indiana without him last week, people may have forgotten what safety Kurt Coleman brings to the table each week. While Anderson Russell certainly stepped up against the Hoosiers, Coleman is this team’s best big-play guy on either side of the ball. After recording a career-high 14 tackles against Wisconsin, Coleman is second on the team with 43 stops this season despite playing in one fewer game. He has three forced fumbles, two interceptions and an 89-yard return for a touchdown.
