I'd like to add one thing here, and it's why "BUCKEYEPLANET" is by far and away the best place that any human could ever go to discuss TOSU football.

This is a crappy subject to have to "discuss" yet "discuss" it what it has been. Folks here have basically voiced "agree" or "disagree" with the suspension. Nobody has condoned or chastized what Kurt did, and the replies here have all been pretty well thought out.

Kudos to all that have replied to this situation. I've made my points and stand by them, yet respect all of those who see it the other way. Again, it goes right back to the top of this post.

And to Kurt, keep doing what you've been doing, CAPTAIN!
We love you and are all behind you 100%!!!!!!!!!!:oh:

Peace:io:

That post deserves a GPA!!

Ditto, this makes BP the place to be, where we can have civil and enlighted, intelligent discussion!!!!

[ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E-PTEr78pcs]YouTube - Kurt Coleman commits flagrant penalty vs. Illinois[/ame]

I wonder if a player would get punished if this wasn't the quarterback getting hit?

Now that I've actually seen the hit...that was pretty bad. I still think the suspension is harsh since there were no previous incidents with Coleman, but I can see why the Big Ten would be upset.

I watched the hit a few times and I think that the runner was only falling when Kurt hit him and it was a combination of him falling into Kurt's tackle as much as Kurt going for his head. Kurt had already layed out for the tackle before the runner was even down.
This is the B10 just wanting to make a statement.

I don't have a problem with the suspension, as long as it is enforced each and every time such a hit happens.

Also, I do have a problem with the idea that a late hit is equally as bad as throwing a punch.

Whether or not the player's team is a "bread winning" team should not be factored into the equation in determining whether or not a player should be suspended, IMO.

I agree that it shouldn't matter, but in this political society in which we live now-a-days, I think it does matter. I have no physical evidence of my opinion, but I would guess that the Big Ten would take a threat or any resistance to questionable suspensions/infractions from a university such as Ohio State much more seriously than say Indiana University. The Big Ten NEEDS Ohio State and they need to be very careful when slapping the hand that helps to feed them. Again, just my opinion.

Regardless of whether the suspension is warranted/not warranted, if it prevents Kurt from hitting another ball carrier with the crown of his head then it will be worth it. He is lucky that he is missing the IU game because of suspension instead of laying in the OSU medical center. I watched this play last night in slow motion a couple different times from every angle shown on the original broadcast. From the end zone angle behind Illinois you can see how horizontal Kurt was and how the crown of his helmet when into/under the facemask of the Illinois QB. The hit may have been late, but I can't fault Kurt for that because he had already started his launch before the QB was down. I think it was the way the QB was struck, and possibly his reaction afterward, that lead to the suspension. Personally, I'm just glad that Kurt will be back for the Wisconsin game fully functional.

I just think this sets a really difficult precedent. Is every late hit now going to be considered for suspension? Every helmet to helmet hit? Where do they draw the line? Just seems like this was a player that launched himself before the offensive player was ruled down and because the kid was going down and Kurt couldn't stop...the helmet to helmet occurred. It looked bad, but the intent didn't IMO. Tough precedent. I hope the Big Ten is now prepared to deal with a lot of crap because of it.

My thoughts exactly. Unless the act in question is something egregious (such as punching an opponent in the chin, as the UM player did) and something that the officials on the field did not see the first time around (again, as in the UM player's case), I think the league should stay out of it and let the officials on the field make the call. As has been said before, this whole situation reeks of the Big Ten attempting to appear evenhanded after suspending the UM player and RR crying about it for the week after.

KURT COLEMAN
SAFETY OHIO STATE

Behind the scenes, it seems that safety Kurt Coleman and his Ohio State teammates knew the Big Ten hammer -- in the form of a one-game suspension -- was coming for his late hit on Illinois' Eddie McGee two weeks ago.

"We joked about the whole thing, even on Sunday (after the Illinois game): 'Well, Kurt, see you at Wisconsin,' " fellow safety Anderson Russell said. "And it actually ended up happening."

Now Wisconsin is here, and Coleman -- co-captain, playmaker and director of the backside of the OSU defense -- is back.

"I know he's ready to get back out there, and he is going to come out there and play hard," said Russell, who took Coleman's spot in the lineup last week at Indiana.
