S Kurt Coleman (All B1G, All-American)

Well-rested safety leads tireless effort
October 12, 2009

Ohio State safety Kurt Coleman spent part of his personal bye week (it sounds less harsh than suspension) as the surprise guest at his little sister's birthday party.

No one was more surprised than Coleman.

"My stomach dropped," he said.

No, his sister hadn't grown an extra head. Coleman was describing his reaction when coach Jim Tressel informed his senior co-captain the Big Ten was suspending him for the Oct. 3 game at Indiana because of his helmet-to-helmet collision with Illinois quarterback Eddie McGee.

"I didn't get mad," Coleman said. "I had to move forward and turn this situation into a positive."

Football players don't usually have a Saturday off in October, so Coleman took the opportunity to drop in on his sister and her teeny-bopper pals. You would have thought Tyra Banks showed up with some girly stuff.

"It's a moment I won't forget," said Coleman, who along with his brother presented the birthday girl with two pairs of canvas Chuck Taylors, those retro tennis shoes from an era when Coleman's OSU forefather Jack Tatum was prowling the secondary.

"Football only goes so far, but family is forever."

OSU’s Coleman: “I Got the Party Rockin’”
By Tom Archdeacon | Sunday, October 11, 2009

COLUMBUS — Kurt Coleman summed it up perfectly:

“I got the party rockin’.”

While you may think the Ohio State senior safety and team captain was talking about his spectacular, first-quarter, 89-yard interception return for a touchdown against Wisconsin, Saturday, Oct. 10 — the play that lit the fuse on the Buckeyes’ 31-13 romp over the Badgers at Ohio Stadium — he actually was talking about the Saturday before that.

Instead of suiting up with the Bucks for their game at Indiana, the Northmont High grad was back in Dayton, enduring a one-game suspension by the Big 10 for his helmet-to-helmet hit on Illinois’ back up quarterback in the final minute of OSU’s blowout victory over the Illini in late September.

Not allowed to accompany the team, he came home to watch his alma mater defeat Wayne High on Friday night, then stayed over so he and his brother Kyle could surprise their little sister, Cassie, at her 13th birthday party.

“A bunch of 12 and 13 year old girls and us — yeah, I got the party rockin’,” he laughed. “Actually the party was supposed to have been in Bloomington if I’d travelled with the team.”

Football: Coleman named OSU defensive player of the week
Monday, October 12, 2009

The Ohio State football coaching staff announced its weekly award winners from the team's 31-13 victory over Wisconsin on Saturday.

Safety Kurt Coleman was the Buckeyes' defensive player of the week, with an 89-yard interception return for a touchdown (the fifth longest such play in Ohio State history) and a career-high 14 tackles.

How this kid isn't mentioned as a possible All-Big Ten and/or All-American at the start of every game is beyond me. He has been solid at every start all season long. He may not be the best Safety in America, but is one of the best.

all american? like the same award that is going to t mays and e berry? or burnett, black, chancellor, stucky etc?

all conference, maybe ill grant you that. all american, id take those guys first. that being said hes having a great year. and kudos to kurt for his rebound after being suspended for last weeks game.

I think he's getting consideration...

Taylor Mays is a faster version of Shazor. Makes the highlight reel, but is a liability on too many other plays (like ReyRey also) Mays is a LB at the next level.

Eric Berry is a top-5 pick and the kind of athlete which merits 'honorable mention' recognition for the heisman. After him, I'd say Kurt is in the discussion for the other safety spot.

I think Taylor Mays stays at Safety at the next level as will Eric Berry (should he decide to leave as a junior) and are certainties to be drafted higher than Coleman. Also, to some extent Coleman's draft stock will be dependent on other Jr.s such as Reshad Jones, Ahmad Black and Morgan Burnett with a lot of "up-side". There are some other very good safeties in contention such as Darrell Stuckey, Kam Chancellor and Justin Woodall. I have my fingers crossed for Coleman being drafted on the first day.....but I don't see him being a first rounder.

correct. however, he made that tackle, no?
Did you watch him in coverage that game? (or for the rest of his career) That's the reason he's playing LB at the next level. That wasn't just the knee, he is a liability back there.

yes, yes i did.

it appeared to be two different thoughts, i furthered that by splitting them into two sentences.
1-coleman being a 25-35 (late 1, early 2) pick. could it happen, sure. but lets be honest with ourselves. then again most folks here seemed to think troy smith was a first rounder all the way, no questions asked...
2-all american candidacy. once again no. for the people that i listed earlier, and jazzman tossed out, ill say no. all b10? sure, seems reasonable to me. all american, itll be a stretch, and if we are honest with ourselves tress likes to push his srs for awards (didnt antonio smith make all b10 a few years ago? point proven).

For a media-slobbered All-World DB who is supposed to be a fucking monster at safety, it was a less-than impressive, in fact somewhat-embarrassing tackle. Mays was in position to blow Boom the fuck up and instead got trucked by him.

Then why throw it out there as though he is not one?

Reggie Nelson was drafted 21st overall. I don't think it's a stretch to think Coleman could end up in that ballpark, even if it's 10 picks later.

Eric Weddle would be another at #37.

Please don't throw out what the general populace said about Troy as though it applies to me, particularly since you think that opinion was homeristic/foolish.

If Shazor can be an all-american, I don't see how you can dismiss Coleman, particularly given the big plays he's turned in so far.

Coleman 09 has outplayed Mays 08 imo, and he was an AA. He's in the ballpark of Jenkins 08.

He's played as well as Craig Steltz a few years back. Same with Leon Hall.

Mays has 28 tackles and an interception returned for zero yards in four games with no other statistics listed.

Coleman has 43 tackles, two interceptions returned for 89 yards and a TD, 2 passes broken up, four passes defended (I think that is what BU and PD stand for) and three forced fumbles through four games.

Statistically it is pretty clear who has the better All-American resume up to this point in the season.
