Rose Bowl: USC 38, Penn St. 24 (Final)

Disagree with everything, considering the best of the Big 10 (Ohio State, Penn State currently) has not been very competitive against the best of the SEC and Pac 10.

If USC were the best, by far, they'd be in the title game. Oklahoma and Florida have had great years.

I don't get your first point. Ohio St. and Penn St. have been the best teams in the Big 10 and if you take a look at what we did against USC, Florida, and LSU plus what Penn St. is currently doing, the Big 10 has not been competitive with the top teams in other conferences.

Your second point is based on the presumption that the current system of deciding the best team works......and it does not.

You mean like how Florida should've beaten Ole Miss?

To say it's their own fault implies they control the voters. They don't. No one does. USC has as much a claim to a title game berth as anyone, and I hope they complain about it.

The fact that we're in the 21st century and we still don't have a playoff is ridiculous. Anything that might push the issue is fine with me.

the point is

had USC has beaten Oregon State, they wouldnt had put their fate into the hands of the voters

once you lose a game in college football its tough luck from there on out if you dont get into the title game

USC 115 Illinois/OSU/PSU 27

Whine all you want about the USC blowjobs, but unless the Big 10 shows it can even compete with an elite team, it deserves to be regarded as a joke.

It is obvious that the best of the Big 10 can't compete iwth the likes of Texas, USC, Florida, or LSU.

I have to agree with this until we beat another top team from a top conference. USC, Florida/LSU, OKlahoma and Texas would IMO get us back on track. Great thing is we have another chance to step up to the plate for the big ten Jan 5th. If Texas blows us out in 4 days then our conference will be in full out nose dive

I think it's remarkably glib and, frankly, stupid to claim that USC isn't as good as Florida or Oklahoma. The fact of the matter is that all three of those teams lost early, but only USC was held in limbo around #5 until the end of the year. Just because the (subjective) rankings didn't move them up doesn't mean they wouldn't ruin either of those teams.

God only knows why USC fails to show up against Pac 10 dregs. I know this, though: I wouldn't put any team in 1A against them in a big televised game. That's just asking for trouble.

Not sure who you're responding to, but if it's me, that's not what I was saying at all. Someone said that they were, by far, better than Oklahoma and Florida. Not saying they're better, worse, or equal, just saying that the claim is ridiculous.

That comment is true, there have been a few other comments that he should get some criticism for over that one IMO.

Most of the stuff they're saying is true, in all honesty. It's annoying, but true. There have been some comments that have been over the line.

The only reason that I selected that one is because it just happened to be said as I was typing. Hell, just start typing during the game and you'll have all kinds of new material.

You're right that some of that which is spoken is true... but it's all about the delivery and the constant stroking of their nut sacks that is pissing me off. I guess I'd just like to have my nut sack stroked a bit too. Jealousy is an ugly green monster.

My thoughts after watching the first half.

First, the commentary for this game is biased, embarrassing, and unprofessional.

Second, the Big Ten really needs to sit back and think about what it wants to accomplish in football. Sparty put up a bit more of a struggle than I expected and Iowa got a good win over a real bottom feeder oUSC. Wisky was an embarrassment and so is Penn State in this game.

The problem in this game begins with the line play. USC has been allowed to own the offensive line of scrimmage. The secondary is shockingly bad for Penn State, due to defensive schemes and the matchup against the USC wide receivers.

Coaching is a major problem in this game for Penn State on both sides of the ball.

There was a time when we used to feel that playing TSUN in The Game was the national championship because the Big Ten was such a tough conference and Ohio State and TSUN were its best. Now, unless there is a remarkable change over the next two years, the Big Ten may well become as irrelevant as Notre Dame very quickly.

I guess the take home messages are these:

The Big Ten continues to shit the bed in major interconference play and the current system doesn't really do a good job of selecting the strongest teams to play one another. Neither of those are really news bulletins.

exactly

im not even watching the second half, because muffberger will be whining for a USC split national title the whole time

can someone explain how the #5 team in the AP poll could possibly go all the way to #1 for beating the #6 team?

if that happened it would be the biggest crime in the history of college football

and it would also show a BEYOND CLEAR medias bias..........

And your second point is wildly speculative. You have no way of knowing that they're better by far, just like the current system has no way of knowing. What basis do you have that USC is far better than Florida and Oklahoma?

As for the first part, your original quote made it sound like you thought that the best of the Big 10 were competitive. Looks like we're agreeing that they're not competitive at the moment.

I think it is pretty hard to argue that the last couple of years the best of the Big 10 has not been competitive with the top teams in the SEC and Pac 10. USC is by far the best team in the country this year.

USC's loss to Oregon State took things out of their own control.

The Pac-10 going 1-6 against the Mountain West, and Oregon State being drilled at Penn State, made USC unable to pass 1-loss champions from the SEC and the Big 12. The voters and the computers all agreed on that.

They have no case for #1 this year. The Pac Ten going 5-0 in bowls just came at the wrong time for them. If those Pac 10 non-conference wins had come in September, it would have been a different story.

Yeah, it's annoying as fuck. I wish they'd stop, but I understand why they won't.. just wish they'd stop with the little jabs that aren't needed.

Given that we play USC next year, what happened this year won't hvae much bearing next year as long as we beat USC.

Yeah that's true. If we take care of our business, we'll be fine.

But, if I had a choice to go 6-2 in conference and have the big ten win all their bowl games, or, go 8-0 in the current version of the big ten, I'd pick the 8-0 in a heartbeat. But I'd still like to think we were in a semi-respectable conference. Right now, we are definitely not.

None of this weeks bowl events makes me feel good about Monday.

Waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay to many mental mistakes by PSU.

Another one. :shake:

Travel : Penn State 2500+ miles
USC 11 miles

Just thought Id mention it.

Here's a novel idea. Play the "Grand Daddy of them all" in a neutral field. Or better yet play them in a frozen stadium in the Midwest. I'll bet Petey and his golden boys wouldn't do so well.
