College football: Rodriguez's Michigan deal worth $2.5 million per year

Monday, January 21, 2008 5:54 AM

Rich Rodriguez agreed to six-year deal worth $2.5 million annually when he left West Virginia last month for Michigan.
The $15 million contract, which has not been finalized or signed, also includes a $4 million buyout. The terms of Rodriguez's deal were confirmed yesterday by school spokesman Bruce Madej.
West Virginia has sued Rodriguez to collect on a $4 million buyout clause in his contract with the Mountaineers.
When Rodriguez was introduced as Michigan's new coach Dec. 17, school officials declined to comment on any details of the deal.

How is Dick Rod going to get around his buy out clause? Isn't he going to work for the first year and a half for free since he should have to pay that?

Same way he is trying to weasel out of the one from WVU. Make up some little so-called breach into a big deal...... Really would you quit your job because WV HS coaches had to pay $5 to get into a game? Think about it. A ticket to a WVU football game is probably $45-55 for the average fan. Seems like a great bargain to me.
However, if you felt that strongly about it, RR why not pay the $5 yourself and distribute the tiks to the coaches? You make $1.8 million a year I am sure you can afford it.
Beside you could have used your PR savvy and made your contribution to the High School coaches public to shame the university to change their policy. You didn't do this because you really didn't care since it was an afterthought to rationalize (weasel out) your way out of the buyout...... Face it, this is not a honorable man...

Inconvenient Truths - It's Not All Black & White

Magee Race Card not Played by WVU - Magee Took Himself Out of Consideration

So, Magee was presumptive OC at TSUN - but that means WVU black-balled him, OK Mr. Brown :shake:

Now this has reached a new low, have both parties handled this situation in a professional manner? No not by a long shot. But this is the most innapropriate twist to this story yet. In various outlets TSUN supporters and others such as Mandel at SI have come out and defended RR against a smear campaign created by the administration of WVU. Their defense in the missing documents case was that it was just like a jilted lover with WVU playing the part of the Ex. Now this?

Whoever the leak was that created the missing documents controversary should be reprimanded by the university for their behavior. But for all the things that were said nowhere did anyone come out and say the words RR destroyed these missing documents. What was said was files are missing, they were in RR's office and he was seen shredding something on such and such a date. We were all left to draw the inevitable conclusion. But this is a point blank quote from someone directly involved in this situation calling WVU racist. This has reached a point now that has gone past TSUN supporters defending their new coach and those of us that bleed S&G reveling in their misery.

Racial prejudice is not a bargaining chip. The context and the timing of this story make it appear as such, this is morally irresponsible and has no place in this dispute. The two parties involved may believe that they are helping RR and his case against WVU by painting the university in a bad light but they are terribly mistaken. Based upon the undisputed facts in the original story many different conclusions can be drawn which undermines the credibility of those making the accusations. For many people the fact is once he got on that plane and was introduced in AA his chances at being the next HC in Morgantown were over, regardless of the color of his skin. And my big question is when was he made aware by this person "in the know" that he wouldn't have a chance to become the next HC? Sometime between Saturday afternoon and Monday morning? Sorry I just don't see that many things occuring in that small a window.

I have said all along that WVU was going to have egg on it's face over the document disappearance. But whoever is behind this, my guess the agent, will have put his own camp in a terrible situation. RR was quoted this week as wanting to take the high road, some of those in his circle clearly didn't get the memo. Now the question is will RR cut his losses if this blows up into something extremely negative and rid himself of an agent who is looking out for nobody's best interest but his own. I am starting to get the feeling that alot of the problems in this are the product of RR getting terrible advice from those close to him who he trusts. I think his agent's agenda has become crystal clear. Does anyone else think it is a coincidence that this story came to light in the wake of a heightened sense of racism in our country because of the situation in the golf world? Using that heightened awareness for your own personal gain is dispicable.

This situation is absolutely out of control.

Today in South Africa, CNN is running a piece on the news about Democratic candidates courting the black vote. In it, Bill Clinton is shaking hands with Hillary's supporters. Guess who shows up for about five seconds in screen to shake Bill's hand? Yep, RR.

Was he wearing that snazzy jacket from the picture with Pryor?

I tend to be pretty skeptical most of the time when people scream RACE!!! There's almost always extenuating circumstances, or the timing is suspicious, or what have you. This would be one of those times.

You'd think, for example, that if Magee were truly that offended by whatever remark, he'd have said something then and there, right when he was told this by the anonymous adminstrator. Or if that was a bad time (perhaps because Magee didn't want to burn his bridges before building another one) then right when he was hired at Michigan, which looks to have been right about the same time RR was given that he attended the press conference. Why wait until nobody believes anything any more from either side?

Arguments in favor of Magee: Supposedly, of course, Magee was told he didn't have a chance to replace RR as HC before the trip to Ann Arbor, which is why he was in AA in the first place. Plausible. And Magee was allowed to coach the offense in the Fiesta Bowl, and he did brilliantly - 48 points, over 500 yards. You might think that performance would have made WVU want to look closely at him as a candidate. They convinced their DC to stay, why not the OC too?

Again though. Timing: shady. Surely Magee knew he wasn't a candidate a long time ago. Might as well stop lobbing grenades through the newspapers and get down to coaching.

Who's the psychotic girlfriend now? I get so confused.

HTM, nice post. I think all of us regardless of the team we cheer for have realized that there will be no winners when this is all over. Sure WVU may get their money but at what cost? An increased national perception of a state and it's university as racist? No amount of money is worth the damage this has done to the university. They chose to continue this trial in the court of public opinion and it escalated into a scenario that will take years to remedy.

RR is not absolved of guilt in many of the events that have played out but the people around him have made it considerably worse. In our society the proverbial buck has to stop somewhere and the potential damage done by those in his circle continue to make RR look worse in the public eye. RR put his trust in these people and they are repaying him for it by fanning the flames of an out of control firestorm.

Love them or hate them these are two programs with tremendous fanbases who are watching as their universities credibility and values are put to question in the most public and embarassing manner imaginable. I could not to begin to imagine how any of us would feel if our beloved tOSU were embroiled in something like this. The actions and reactions on each side of this have done no good, it's time to try a new path. Mediation, find some common ground and do some common good. They both owe at least that much to many loyal followers.

In an effort to look out for their best interests both sides have made themselves look worse with their tactics. I hope things have finally reached the breaking point and these two sides come together, in private, and reach an agreement that will end the mudslinging and help each begin the road back to rebuilding a small amount of the immense loss of credibility both are suffering. This became about far more than football when the color of someone's skin became the issue.

Thus, they'll come into town and the SDU stadium will be sold out - and everyone local will hate them. Guess Rick will look really smart and prophetic.

Rick Rodriguez might think that makes them like the Yankees.

I have this figure in mind.
